  1. I'm not sure if there are any source ports available for the Mac version, but they usually allow Joystick use. The native executable (in my experience) wouldn't recognise any controllers other than keyboard/mouse.

  2. In order to enable your joystick for Quake 1, try opening the Quake 1 directory (usually C:\Program Files\Quake\), then open the "Id1" and create notepad file named "autoexec.cfg". Open this file and copy & paste the following (but not the "----") and save the file:

    ----
joyname "(put the name of joystick here)"
    joyadvanced 1.0
joyadvaxisx 3 // assigns Strafing the left stick (x)
joyadvaxisy 1 // assigns Moving Forward/Backward the left stick (y)
joyadvaxisz 2 // assigns Looking Up/Down the right stick (y)
joyadvaxisr 4 // assigns Looking Left/Right the right stick (x)
    joyadvaxisu 0 // not used
    joyadvaxisv 0 // not used

joypitchsensitivity -0.4 // change these settings to suit your taste
joypitchthreshold 0.05 // change these settings to suit your taste
joyyawsensitivity -0.8 // change these settings to suit your taste
joyyawthreshold 0.03 // change these settings to suit your taste
joyforwardsensitivity -1.5 // change these settings to suit your taste
joyforwardthreshold 0.2 // change these settings to suit your taste
joysidesensitivity 1.25 // change these settings to suit your taste
joysidethreshold 0.125 // change these settings to suit your taste

Start Quake 1 and press the tilde key (~) and type "exec autoexec.cfg" and press enter.

If you want a better understanding on using joysticks for Quake 1, open the JOYSTICK.TXT file in the Docs folder (usually C:\Program Files\Quake\Docs)

  3. I used the above as a starting point, but various axis of my particular xbox controller and computer setup vary widely from the recipe posted here (and elsewhere). Through trial and error, this is what worked for me, using the 'Ultimate Quake Patch" for the steam version of the game ( forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1756923 ).

Edit the autoexec.cfg file in the id1 folder of the Quake directory (if you're using the Steam version it'll be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Quake

Add these lines to the file.

joyname "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows"
    joyadvanced 1.0

joyadvaxisx 3 // strafe left right
joyadvaxisy 1 // move forward back
    joyadvaxisz 0 // not used
joyadvaxisr 2 // look up and down
joyadvaxisu 4 // look left and right
    joyadvaxisv 0 // not used

joyforwardsensitivity -1.0 // inverts forward and back
    joysidesensitivity 1.0
joypitchsensitivity 0.75 // makes looking up and down a bit slower than moving and turning.
joyyawsensitivity -1.0 // inverts left and right
    joyforwardthreshold 0.25
    joysidethreshold 0.25
    joyyawthreshold 0.25
    joypitchthreshold 0.25

Save, and run Quake. You should be good to go. BTW - I had to put the inverts on the movements in there because by default everything was backwards.
