FIFA 2000: Major League Soccer
Review by Larcen Tyler
"The golden goal of 2000!"
After playing FIFA 99, I could only wonder if they could take the classic formula and make it even better. I guess I was right, as the 21st century of soccer definitely looks and plays a lot better than the 20th century!
Graphics: 10/10
Even if you don't have a 3D accelerator card, it doesn't mean you won't be able to appreciate the excellent graphics. Players collide with one another when tackling, argue with one another after a vicious foul, and celebrate victory. To top that off, you even get facial animations, which look a lot better than Striker Pro 2000's! They actually look like they're talking rather than just babbling. You'll see them as they argue with referees, express frustration, or just celebrate a goal!
Sounds: 10/10
Perhaps the most notable thing is the default commentary isn't a British announcer, but ESPN's Phil Schoen and Women's World Cup champion Julie Foudy. Both give you play-by-play commentary on the action, with Phil's standard explanations of what's going on, along with Julie's soccer knowledge to back it up, along with plenty of humorous quips! Whereas the previous FIFA games lacked music, save for the menu screens (OK, music worth noting!) This music is actually great! You'll find yourself humming them in no time!
Controls: 10/10
I recommend using a joypad, as there are a lot of buttons to memorize on a keyboard. Either way, you've got full control over your player, with jukes, spin moves, bicycle kicks on offense, and sliding tackles, steals, and blocks on defense. You can even pull off an intentional foul if you want, but be advised that the referee will not take kindly to this!
Replay: 10/10
For the first time in a soccer game, FIFA 2000 includes Major League Soccer teams, meaning you can see if you can lead the New England Revolution, the Colorado Rapids, or any of the other teams, to the finals! You can also customize the teams and players, changing colors, appearances, and names. Try populating your favorite team with friends from school, work, or whatever!
Even if you're not an MLS fan, there are still plenty of international teams to play as!
Overall: 10/10
The first soccer game for the 21st century has taken the stadium by storm! If you're a PC gamer with a love of soccer, then I'd definitely recommend you play this game! Anybody who feels different should be sent off the pitch!
