"One of the best RPGs of the century"
Considering the century just started, thats not quite as big as it sounds, but it makes for a good title. Still, this game rocks.
Anachronox is a very fun, funny, engrossing game. The writing is very clever and often quite funny. The charecters are some of the most fleshed out I have ever seen in a videogame, and all unique. There is Paco ''The Fist'' Estrella, a drunk ex-superhero. Pal-18, the little robot who only wants to be loved...and to hit on secretarys. And Democratus, a planet that shrunk itself down to join your party. There are many more, but moving on....the game gets off to a somewhat slow start. A bunch of fetch and carry missions, though its saved by the great dialogue. After the first few hours, though, the game really picks up as you travel all over the galaxy. The combat system is great, too, and is sorta like the Final Fantasy ATV system on steroids. The magic system is mystech, which you get about a fourth of the way through the game, and about halfway through the game, you get elementors, a sorta super complex magic system somewhat like Final Fantasy 7's Materia system. The battle is well paced, and there are multiple difficulty levels to choose from. There are a few bugs in the game, but most can be fixed via a quick patch.
The best the Quake II engine has ever seen. The game is beautiful-crisp, clear, and colorful. They have performed tricks youd think the engine was never capable of. Its still the Quake II engine, though, so the textures can be grainy. Other then that, though, the game is pleasing on the eyes.
Wonderful. The voice acting in this game is top notch, from the hard boiled detective voice of Sylvester ''Sly'' Boots to the little 5 year old voice of PAL-18(Provided by the project lead, Tom Hall). The music is also great- when I first launched up the game, I actually sat at the main menu listening to the theme for a while before starting.
Value:8. It has many, many sidequest, and most charecters give difference comments about everything. It still a fairly linear game, though.
Overall: 9 (Not an average)
This game is the second bet RPG of the year(My favorite being Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura). YOu can get it pretty cheap now, it runs on almost any system, and it kicks major butt. GET IT NOW!
