"Good RPG that came out for the wrong system"
Unfortunately, it is always the same: A RPG like Anachronox comes out for PC and it does not sell. Reason? This kind of RPG is designed for console users and not for PC users. Anachronox came out for the wrong system!
I do not know what the game magazines were criticizing all about. The graphics are not that bad. They are 3D, run smoothly and look good. Well, I have seen more detailed textures, but I think these of Anachronox are okay. There are different planets, areas. Many different looking areas. Fine.
Well, it has been a while since I played this game, but I don´t think the sound was bad. I liked the voice acting in the cutscenes (there were lots of them). Nothing to worry about.
Hmmmm - it is a little unusual playing a game like this with mouse and keyboard. At first I was a bit confused but then it worked. I got used to it and later in the game I liked them.
I like SF-RPGs and the plot is not bad. You have to travel to several planets to stop some unknown villain. Everything becomes clear in the end...
There are various places to explore: The planet ''Democratus'', the spaceship of ''Supervillain Rictus'', some living asteroid, ... There is fun in the game, humour, perfect.
At one point the storyline is told from several perspectives, very exciting.
I love all the console RPGs like the Final Fantasy series, Legaia 1 and 2, Grandia 1 and 2, ... so I like this game as well. You walk around in a town and talk to people, you get quests and solve them. Then you go to a dungeon, kill all the monsters and finally kill the boss. You get something and the game continues. There are these nice cutscenes, there is an exciting story and a good fighting system.
This fighting system reminds me of Final Fantasy games. Up to three persons fight together and after a while it´s the persons turn to hit the enemy. Sometimes the enemy hits you as well.
There are some mini games as well: You have to navigate on a river and collect items, you fly with a spaceship.
Some of the adventure passages are a little confusing. You do not always know what to do next. But once you find out the game is much fun again. The battles are moderate. There is only one unfair place: Later you have to fight through an icy cavern. Once the monsters hit you you are ''frozen'' which means ''game over''. But there is no chance to get some warm cloths to protect you from this. I had to relaoad an older game to do so. But that was all.
If you have a PC and like console-like RPGs then go and get this game. It is not the newest RPG but it is a contrast to the recent highlights like Morrowind or Neverwinter Nights.
If you get Anachronox, get Grandia 2 as well. Another great console-like RPG. Have fun with these good games!
