    NOTES
    ================================================================================
    Expansion players: These tables are not even close to accurate for LoD-generated
    items!  Not only did the expansion add new affixes not found in Classic, but
    entirely new item types, special charm and jewel affixes, many new magic-only
    modifiers (i.e. affixes that are not checked on generating a rare), even
    different affix level vs. item level generation rules (i.e., circlets).
    
    Font: Use a fixed-width font to read these tables, or your local optometrist
    will get filthy rich untangling your retinas.
    
    CLvl: Means character level.  Most affixes have minimum CLvl requirements to
    use.
    
    ALvl: Means affix level, which is determined by different things: in shops, by
    the CLvl of the player who spawns the shopkeeper, off monsters by the level of
    the monster, in treasure boxes by the dungeon level, and in gambling by the CLvl
    of the player who spawns the gambling window, plus or minus a few levels.
    
    (): Inferior affixes: Affixes in lowercase enclosed within () parentheses are
    level 1 inferior versions of affixes.  The lowercase doesn't appear in-game,
    it's just my notation for this document.  These are extra low-powered versions
    of affixes intended to enlarge the affix pool for very low level item spawns. 
    Once the ALvl is high enough for the normal version of the same affix to appear,
    the inferior version is phased out and no longer has a chance to spawn.  For
    example, because +5-10% "Crimson" can appear on amulets at ALvl 5 and above, the
    inferior +5% "(crimson)" is only checked from ALvl 1 through 4.  All inferior
    affixes expire at ALvl 14 or lower.  (Same-named affixes not formatted this way
    are not considered inferior by the game, and can generate normally despite the
    fact they seem inferior to us; this is why we see so many Rugged and Sturdy
    affixes generating, there's two non-inferior prefixes with each of those names!)
    
    []: Minor glitch: The inferior affix "[of energy]", when enclosed within []
    brackets, is slightly buggy: due to a little mistake in the in-game affix table,
    it's checked from ALvl 1 through 4 regardless of when the normal affix "of
    Energy" begins to appear.  This little glitch affects only very low-level spawns
    for amulets, rings, helmets, wands, and staffs.  An additional minor glitch is
    that wands up to ALvl 4 can spawn with "[of Blight]" even though there is no
    regular "of Blight" affix at ALvl 5-- that is, wands with ALvl higher than 5
    don't have natural poison damage.
    
    Magical generation: A magical item, when generated, will have a 25% chance of
    having a prefix, a 50% chance of having a suffix, and a 25% chance of having
    both.  Affixes of the item's ALvl and lower are eligible, with the exception of
    inferior affixes when the normal affix is available (see above).  Different
    affixes have different frequencies of appearance, valued internally by the game
    from 1 through 8-- some affixes can be up to eight times more common than
    others.  The great majority of affixes have a frequency of 3 or 4, with
    frequencies actually weighted toward many of the most popular affix families. 
    Surprisingly, the rarest (1 frequency) affixes aren't especially sought-after
    ones (mostly resists on weapons and light radius affixes).  The frequency totals
    at the bottom of each table tally prefixes and suffixes separately (because
    that's the way the game handles them), and I've excluded inferior and magic-only
    affixes-- you may need to tweak the tally for your own purposes.
    
    Affix families: Generally, prefixes that do the same thing but with different
    amounts are in the same family.  Likewise with suffixes.  Prefixes and suffixes
    are never in the same family.  For example, "Glimmering" and "of Light" are
    different families, but "of the Jackal" and "of the Colossus" are in the same
    family.  The enhanced damage plus attack family ("Sharp" through "King's") is
    separate from the enhanced damage only family ("Jagged" through "Merciless") and
    the attack rating only family ("Bronze" through "Meteoric").
    
    Rare generation: A rare item, when generated, will have an equal chance of having
    three, four, five, or six affixes.  Each affix has a 50/50 chance of being a
    prefix or a suffix, with the restriction that there can be no more than three of
    each.  An affix in the same affix family as one already selected can't spawn. 
    All affixes of the item's ALvl and lower are eligible, with the exceptions of
    inferior affixes when the normal affix is available (see above), and the
    following two magic-find affixes: "Fortuitous" is never checked on any rare, and
    "of Fortune" is not checked on rare rings-- bummer.  Normal affix frequencies
    still apply.  Rares are given a randomized two-word name that has no game effect.
    
    Imbuing ALvl: Generates a rare item of the same type as the normal item offered,
    following the usual rules of rare item generation above.  Non-magic prefixes on
    the item before imbuing ("Superior" "Low Quality" "Cracked" "Damaged") are
    removed, and armor defense value is re-rolled, so imbuing a perfect defense Grim
    Shield is no better than imbuing a poor defense Grim Shield.  The rare of the
    same type will have affixes ALvl equal to the player's CLvl + 6.  For instance, a
    character must be at least level 30 to be able to imbue armor with the popular
    "Holy" modifier, which is ALvl 36 on all armor types, but he must be level 50
    before he can hope to get the "King's" modifier, which is ALvl 56 on all weapon
    types, on a weapon.  Because the quest requires CLvl 8, imbued items are all a
    minimum ALvl of 14, enough to eliminate all inferior affixes.
    
    Gambling: Gambled items, no matter what quality they turn out (magic or rare),
    spawn at an ALvl about equal to the gambling player's CLvl.  The CLvl is altered
    by a fudge factor between -3 and +6, so a CLvl 19 player can gamble items with an
    ALvl of 16 or an ALvl of 25 or anything in between.  No matter what, gambled
    items always generate at an absolute minimum of ALvl 5.  It is said to be
    possible to gamble set items, unique items, or magic/rare exceptional items, but
    the probability is too remote to really consider.
    
    Throwing weapons: Thrown weapons cannot spawn with affixes in Diablo II Classic,
    even though they can be gambled.  The best modifier possible on thrown weapons
    is "Superior" with a maximum of 15% enhanced damage and +3 attack rating.
    Melee: 1 Str = +1% Damage, 1 Dex = +4 Atk
    Throw: 1 Str = +0.75% Damage, 1 Dex = +0.75% Damage and +4 Atk
    
    CLvl requirements: I haven't listed CLvl requirements of affixes here, even
    though they're available to me, because it would just clutter the tables too
    much.  CLvl requirement of a magical item is determined by the highest ALvl
    affix on it (with certain minimum CLvl's applying to exceptional items as well). 
    As a rule of thumb, CLvl = ALvl * 0.75 (rounded down) most of the time, CLvl =
    ALvl - 8 for some of the high-level affixes, and the exceptions to these rules
    don't differ enough to matter much.
    
    Dam range bumping: For weapon damage, max damage is always at least one higher
    than min damage.  If a suffix causes min damage to bump into max damage, max
    damage will be increased to compensate.  For example, "of Measure" affix with +4
    to min damage on a 1-4 dagger will bump its damage to 5-6.  Elemental damage
    ranges do not have this property, so the cold damage on "of the Glacier" will
    sometimes generate +4-4 (displaying as a flat +4).
    
    Chill duration: Inferior "(of frost)" adds 1 second of chill, the standard "of
    Frost" adds 2 seconds of chill, and "of the Glacier" adds 4 seconds of chill. 
    Chill duration from multiple gems and items stack together on a single hit.  For
    reference, weapon-socketed sapphires add chill duration in the following
    amounts: chipped = 1 sec, flawed = 1.4 sec, normal = 2 sec, flawless = 2.4 sec,
    perfect = 3 sec.  All chill durations are reduced by cold resistance, as well as
    divided by 2 in nightmare, and divided by 4 in hell difficulty.  Example: a
    "Merciless Executioner Sword of the Glacier" socketed with 2 perfect sapphires
    chills hell cows (0% cold resist) (4 + 3 + 3) / 4 = 2.5 seconds.

    INDEX

    Affix tables in this document are divided according to twenty basic item types,
    which are listed in alphabetic order:
    
    Amulets, Armor (i.e., torso armor or plate), Axes, Belts, Boots, Bows and
    Crossbows, Clubs, Daggers, Gloves, Hammers, Helmets, Maces, Polearms, Rings,
    Scepters, Shields, Spears, Staffs, Swords, and Wands.
    
    Bows and crossbows are different item types, true, but spawn from identical
    affix tables, so I've listed them together here.  Likewise, one-handedness and
    two-handedness doesn't affect swords' and axes' affix tables.
    
    Careful!  Though clubs, maces, hammers, and scepters are "mace class" as far as
    barbarians' weapon mastery is concerned, each generates using a different affix
    table.
    
    Clubs are: Clubs, Spiked Clubs, Cudgels, and Barbed Clubs
    Maces are: Maces, Morning Stars, Flails, Flanged Maces, Jagged Stars, and Knouts
    Hammers are: War Hammers, Mauls, Great Mauls, Battle Hammers, War Clubs, and
                 Marteaux de Fer
    Scepters are: Scepters, Grand Scepters, War Scepters, Rune Scepters, Holy Water
                  Sprinklers, and Divine Scepters

    AMULETS
    ================================================================================
    A good +skills amulet is the Holy Grail of Classic D2.  Too bad the great +2 to
    skills modifiers don't come in until ALvl 90, and the massive pool of affixes by
    then guarantees frustration!  Other affixes of note are "of the Bat" at ALvl 15,
    max resists at ALvl 25, "Wyrm's" and "of the Colossus" at ALvl 30, +1 to skills
    at ALvl 36, "Prismatic" at ALvl 42, and "of the Wraith" at ALvl 58. 
    Interestingly, "Triumphant" and life leech don't appear on amulets.  The cost to
    gamble amulets doesn't increase with your CLvl, so wait to gamble until about
    the ALvl needed.

    * - "Fortuitous" can't appear on rares.  This means max magic finding on rare
        amulets is 25%, though a Fortuitous Amulet of Fortune could have up to 40%,
        if you're lucky.

    ARMOR
    ================================================================================
    Torso armor is one of the most popular imbues: aside from finding the rarest of
    the unique armors, getting enhanced defense on exceptional armor is the only way
    to get enough defense to matter in Diablo 2-- either you've got nicely imbued
    Ornate Plate, or you're as good as naked behind that shield.  CLvl 30 is
    consequently the most popular level to imbue torso armor-- you get "Holy" at
    that level, and "of the Colossus" and "of Simplicity" are already included by
    then too.  CLvl 31 through 49 tack on more of the less-popular affixes, but
    they're moderately useful and improve on low-level affix families already
    present; they'll dilute the most popular affixes but certainly won't ruin the
    armor if you're lucky enough to still get what you wanted.  Most don't care for
    the CLvl 52 requirement that "of Regeneration" will tack on, but "of the Giant"
    requires CLvl 47 anyway, so I don't consider it all that big a deal.

    AXES
    ================================================================================
    Axes were meant to be a fair substitute for swords, for barbarians, having very
    similar stats to swords and virtually the same affix list (the one difference:
    axes do not have paladin skill affixes).  Unfortunately, the barbarian's ability
    to wield two-handed swords in one hand, but not axes, as well as the chipped gem
    recipe to create magic socketed swords, but not axes, have left axes a strictly
    second-rate weapon (third-rate if you count the whole lance-whirlwind thing). 
    An imbued Naga or two might be nice for a hybrid throw barbarian, but, well,
    that's about all the use one might have for imbuing here.

    Belts aren't a common imbue, as set and unique belts usually fill most Classic
    characters' needs.  Nevertheless, dream imbued exceptional belts with life,
    defense, resists, and strength are not only heard of, but statistically not too
    tough to get, thanks to a nice low total frequency tally.  The full four rows of
    potions on all exceptional belts is a nice bonus, too, one most set and unique
    belts in Classic lack.  Just gamble/imbue around ALvl 30 for life, ALvl 36 for
    defense, or ALvl 58+ for strength.

    Rare boots are somewhat overlooked: set and unique boots often impart the
    popular faster run/walk speed modifiers, and that's all most players want.  Most
    don't realize, however, that boots are the only piece of armor that can get the
    best resist prefixes-- not even shields get those!  Add in the magic finding
    and trim list of affixes, and you've got a decent candidate for gambling, if not
    imbuing.  Gamble around ALvl 25 for max resists, or gamble/imbue for ALvl 37 for
    max run/walk.  Here the CLvl 52 requirement on "of Regeneration" can be a sting,
    as the next highest, "Dragon's", requires only CLvl 39; imbue boots at CLvl 64+
    at your own peril!

    Bows, particularly of the gothic variety, are the imbue of choice for Classic
    amazons.  Unfortunately, with so many possible affixes, it can be a little tough
    to get the good ones.  Chain Lightning sorceresses or Holy Shock rangers (you
    crazy guys you) looking for a maximum attack speed and minimum requirements
    Chu-Ko-Nu should shoot for a CLvl 19 imbue-- it's a longshot so be ready to do
    it over a lot.  As for the rest of us, imbuing for "King's" at CLvl 50 or "of
    Perfection" at CLvl 53 is about right.

    Clubs, maces, and hammers differ slightly in their affix charts, but since
    hammers are the only one of the three that ever sees use, nobody cares except
    certain obsessively over-technical GameFAQ writers.  Not that I'd know any. 
    Clubs have the same good strength bonuses as hammers, better than maces, but
    only barbarian skill bonuses can appear, not paladin skills.  All in all, clubs
    seem more a placeholder until characters get good enough stats to use maces or
    hammers, rather than a viable weapon class in their own right.

    might keep picking up that yellow-lettered Stiletto from being a complete waste
    of mouse clicker durability.  Maybe.  Why strength bonuses appear on dagger
    class weapons, and not dexterity bonuses, baffles me.  At least the nice "of

    gloves have the potential to have leech, and dual leech, no less!  Dual stats
    (str and dex), increased attack speed, and solid magic finding to boot isn't bad

    HAMMERS (War Hammer, Maul, Great Maul, Battle Hammer, War Club, Martel de Fer)

    Clubs, maces, and hammers differ in their affix charts, but since hammers are
    generally the only of the three that ever gets used, hardly anyone notices. 
    Hammers are tied with clubs for the best strength affixes of the three (better
    than maces), and, like maces, both barbarian and paladin skill affixes can load
    on hammers (clubs have just barbarian skills).  Hammers have the highest base
    damage AND benefit from a special strength bonus on damage (+1.1% per strength
    point instead of the standard melee +1%), and you can take your pick between a
    one-handed hammer or a two-handed one, an option you can't get on spears. 
    Hammers are the slowest of the three blunt classes, but the pros far outweigh
    the cons.  Anywhere from CLvl 50 ("King's") on up to 99 seems to be a good
    imbue-- it's hard to beat a hammer imbue except with a three-chips recipe sword
    or a high-damage spear with whirlwind.

    HELMETS

    Helmets are a highly unusual imbue: there's very little a rare helmet can do
    that a socketed one can't, let alone set or unique helmets.  The helmet affix
    list is so emaciated, starving children in Bangladesh pass around milk cartons
    and collect rupees for it.  If you absolutely must have a resist helm, just
    gamble around ALvl 18... for maxed-out defense, try imbuing at CLvl 30-44, and
    if you need life on top of that, go for ALvl 68+... or just use rubies to begin
    with.  On the plus side, at least there's no "of Regeneration" lurking at the
    bottom of the list, and with a list this short, getting a decent low level
    headgear with enhanced defense, a resist or two, and a little bit of life is a
    piece of cake.

    Maces differ only slightly from the two other blunt classes as far as affixes
    go.  Clubs and hammers both grant better strength bonuses, but hammers and maces
    can grant paladin skill bonuses, which clubs cannot.  Though maces have better
    base damage than clubs and are faster than hammers, hammers and scepters are
    considered superior overall to maces for various reasons.  Still, certain
    character variants (shock zealers for example) may be able to benefit from maces
    rather than hammers-- if the imbue turns out right!

    Polearms were probably intended to be a good lower-damage faster-swing
    substitute for spears, but the lack of weapon speed adjustments on Whirlwind has
    paved the way for the lance-whirling barbarian to emerge as the undisputed king
    of Classic.  Add in the fact that the only difference between polearm and spear
    affix tables is that spears have +skill prefixes and polearms don't, and you've
    got a weapon class that's very safe to ignore.  Unless you like playing scythe
    necros for style points.

    Aside from life leech, "Triumphant", and some attack rating bonuses, ring
    affixes are just a weaker subset of amulet affixes with higher ALvl's.  And
    since so many rare rings are handed to you as quest rewards, you're sure not to
    need to gamble for too many of them.  Affixes of note are "of the Leech" at ALvl
    14, max resists at ALvl 18, "of Fortune" at ALvl 42, "of the Locust" at ALvl 47,
    max strength and dexterity at ALvl 55 and 56, and max life at ALvl 68.  Note
    rings no longer have mana leech; additionally, "of Fortune" cannot appear on
    rare rings, so don't look too hard for a good rare magic find ring: 15% is the
    max.

    Scepters, as rods, generate with random skill bonuses-- for paladins, in this
    case-- that are independent of the affixes and can exist even on 'nonmagical'
    versions.  Though lacking the damage potential of hammers, they're a bit
    quicker, and offer some affixes of use to spellcasting characters in general--
    they've even been spotted on some magic-using barbarian variants and even
    sorceresses and necromancers from time to time.  Be mindful of a glitch in
    resist prefixes for scepters-- max resists occur at ALvl 25 and weaker resists
    add in after that level.

    Staffs are unpopular in Diablo II Classic because, frankly, shields are just too
    powerful to forego, and rare wands are almost as good as rare staffs even for
    sorceresses.  Though staffs remain one of the more potent sources of sorceress
    skill bonuses-- as rods, both magical and normal staffs may spawn with 1-3
    sorceress skill bonuses-- there exist no affixes that really make rare staffs
    any better than set or unique ones, either.  ALvl 50 is probably the highest
    you want: above that are only bad resists (staffs have the same resist prefix
    glitch as scepters) and "of Regeneration".

    triple-socketed swords, making swords a weapon of choice for many paladins and
    some barbarians too.  It's got an affix table just as good as spears, too.  ALvl

    WANDS

    Wands were designed for use by necromancers, with a streamlined affix list
    specialized for spell-casting rather than fighting-- it has a shorter affix list
    than any other weapon type, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing.  This makes
    it attractive even to all characters who have no need for fighters' affixes;
    most sorceresses eventually use a wand plus a shield for the wand's affixes and
    the shield's resists usually offer more benefit than a staff alone would.  Like
    staffs, ALvl over 50 is pretty worthless, adding only bad resists and "of
    Regeneration".  (Scepters, staffs, and wands all share a glitch where poor
    resists are added at higher ALvl than max resist.)
