Re-Volt
Review by Marth9
"Not that great, but its fun."
Graphics 8.1
The game's highest point. These are very good graphics for a PC racing game. The cars and tracks, all in 3D, are designed very well. However, the weapon designs don't look that good. I don't like them. The rocket looks like a bunch of horrible looking fireworks and the oil slick looks like a teapot filled with oil. I don't think they took much time to design the weapons just as they did with the cars and tracks.
Sound/Music 3.8
Alright, this is horrible. The truth is that the game has no music and very little sound. When you are racing, all you can hear is you car buzzing when you are accelerating and the sounds of weapons when you launch them. You know, a little background music would not hurt.
Gameplay 6.5
The gameplay is not all that great, but still fun. While you unlock all the cars, each car has it's own class. The slowest cars are in the bronze class, while the best are in the platinum class. To get all the cars, you must race in the championship to move onto the next class. You must come a certain place on every race track to continue. If you don't, you lose a continue. Lose all your continues, and are automatically in last place. Get the most points at the end of a championship, and you will move onto the next class. New race tracks are also unlocked when you win the championships.
Also there is a stunt area, where there are 20 stars scattered around the place. Your job is to collect all 20 stars, and when you do, you unlock a new racing mode called clockwork carnage. The clockwork carnage mode is like a single race, except there are 30 cars instead of 8, and you are a tiny, lightweight car instead of the big, heavy good turning ones. There is a built-in track editor also; which means you can build your own track, and name it! You can choose from 12 modules, and place your own pickups anywhere you want! You just got to make sure that the track at least forms a loop before you can race on it.
Controls 6.9
The controls are... not that bad, in my opinion. Even though you can configure the controls to your liking, the default controls are not that bad. As you use up to accelerate, left and right to turn, space to fire a weapon, and the control button to reposition. The controls are pretty darn good, except for the fact the controls are far apart from each other.
Replay Value 5.0
After you unlock all the tracks and cars, there is not much to do. Get rid of all your data and do it again. But there is the clockwork mode, which is always fun, even after you beat the game. The track editor adds a little bit to the replay value, too.
Buy Or Rent?
I say rent first, then buy if you like it. So if you like racing games, you should get a chance to play this. If you don't, it is always good to try this game out anyways. But it might be hard to find, because it was released in 1999.
