SimCity 2000
Review by Retroreviewer Productions
"One of the best Sim games ever made"
SimCity wowed us with a gameplay system where there is no win or loss. And the goal was creating your own town with your own goals in life. Now this sequel is more than a graphical upgrade.
Now for the physics. It looked realistic. Very realistic. They looked like everything you would admire in everyday life. And that's a good thing because good graphics mean that it's very easy to make an easy difference between different buildings.
The sound is also realistic. The booms sounded like something big and metal-like fell off of the Empire State building. It's still nice because the SimCopter kept on giving me a lot of man-sounding nonsense.
It has a few tunes to listen to. They were some of the best I've heard in 1993. Still by today's standards, it's fantastic, yet still realistic. Some were composed by an orchrestra while others are piano-based. Nice.
There's not much for the controls since the only thing you'll be using is your mouse and your keyboard (for naming your town). Everything is perfect about the controls and while the mouse is twitchy at times, it was never a bother to use it.
Now, the whole idea about this game is managing your own cities. There is no goals as you always want to do something different for this city. You can choose a pre-made map chosen at random or make one of your own. Things get more realistic when depending on the time line, you're stuck with whatever resources are made for this certain year. I never found any problems with the gameplay mechanics at all. I mean, this game is so simple even a First-Grader will know how to run the city.
There's another mode called scenario mode which mostly deals with the natural disasters found in this game which can cause longtime damage to the city. That was the single best mode in this game and I'll never doubt its senses ever again.
This game can take forever at free-play. But playing a scenario can take you almost less than 10 minutes on average and that's a bummer. I wished that the scenario missions would be a little more elaborate next time since they were a little too easy to get through.
As a fan of SimCity, I loved how this game is presented with realistic graphics, sounds, a great but small soundtrack, perfect controls and a very good amount of playability. If you are a SimCity series fan or a Sim game fan, you're going to like this game. If you've never played a Sim game before, this is not a bad choice. Buy it now.
