The Ultimate Doom
Review by Ofisil
"Doom Plus!"
The Ultimate Doom is a FPS developed by Id Software. The Ultimate Doom isn't a new Doom game, it's just the addition of a new 9-mission episode to the 3 previous ones and NOTHING MORE. However the fourth episode is extremely good and makes up for the zero additions.
Story: N/A
The Ultimate Doom starts when the third episode of the original Doom ended, meaning that you are now in a demon-corrupted earth and will do all you can to destroy the invaders. Then again, who the hell cares about the plot in a Doom game???
Gameplay: 9/10
ReplayValue: 9/10
What does Doom has to offer? Three episodes filled with demons and lots of weapons that will excite the trigger-happy gamer who wants fast paced action and lots of stuff to shoot. No need for puzzles, a plot or anything else, just grab your gun and shoot anything that isn't you. There are various kinds of enemies. Fire demons, undead humans, flying monstrosities and large hulks with rocket launchers where arms should be. The level design is excellent, full of traps, secrets and dark corners filled with danger. What does The Ultimate Doom adds. Nothing really
we have the same enemies, same weapons and bonus items. The only added thing is a new episode. But what an episode is that? If the level design of the first three episodes was excellent the fourth one is godly! Not only does it look good but it is very, very challenging even for Doom veterans filled with more traps and enemies that you can handle, forcing you to end most levels with a very little amount of health points and ammo.
Graphics: 10/10
Design: 9.5/10
Sound: 10/10
Music: 10/10
Ultimate Doom retains its excellent quality. Wonderfully designed areas, mixing the dark side of the occult with a Sci-Fi \ industrial look. The enemies look wonderful quite possibly the greatest pseudo-3D sprites of that era. Generally the game simply looks excellent. The only problem? Nothing really new. Not a single new enemy sprite or texture, just a different sky image for the new 4th episode. The same goes for the sound section. Doom has excellent sound & music
The Ultimate Doom adds some new tunes and nothing more.
[+]:
-Great graphics & sound\music
[-]:
-No new enemies, graphics or SFX
Also Play:
Doom 2 (PC)
Duke Nukem 3D (PC)
Heretic (PC)
Serious Sam 1 & 2 (PC)
I highly recommend using the free DoomsdayEngine (PC)
Overall: 9.6/10
The fact that the only addition is a new episode is quite a shame really so despite it being simply wonderful some may prefer to play a full game like Doom 2 or Final Doom and skip this.
