"A Great Game, Spoiled"
Being an extremely large WWII buff, I was able to get into this game in no time whatsoever. Basically, you will battle your opponents, which can number well into the dozens upon dozens, in an all out war filled with everything from infantry men to tanks. Yes sir, it is a battle of the strategies when it all comes down to it. Be a good general and you will command the winning team, if not, you will loose much more than your rank...
As the era of online game starts to unfold rapidly in front of our eyes, there will no doubt be many games that just throw a shoddy online feature into their game in hopes that people will buy it. WWII Online is not one of these games, there is a well designed mode of play and a very real to life setting and mood that develops during gameplay. Do to the somewhat awkwardness of the keyboard the controls can be a bit hard to learn and even harder to master. But they are by no means bad.
Graphically, WWII Online can hold its own against any of the big guns that you hear about, and do to the lack of interest in it, WWII Online has much less slowdown than that of a Red Faction or a Tribes 2, which creates a much more fun environment for enjoyment of the game itself.
One great thing about many of the online games is the sound features that have been added to the game. WWII Online has some of the better sounds in a war game, right behind the whole Medal of Honor series. You are able to hear everything from soldiers screaming in agony to the squeaking of the tank that is running over him as a dogfight is happening in the background. All of these things, although I have never fought in combat, make the game seem almost realistic to the everyday player.
Now, there are a few things that can and will stop many people from purchasing this game and quite frankly stopped me from getting it, and that is the price to play online. If you want to see how good you are against a buddy of yours who lives across the globe, it will cost you $10 a month to let you play, and for that kind of money, most people would rather pass and get a new game every month or so, or spend their money on a better game.
If you are in the market for a good action/strategy game that you can match your skill against those of people all around the net, then WWII Online is just the game that you are looking for, but I do warn you, Watch Out! $10 a month will really add up once you start to get addicted to this game.
