Mega Man Legends
Review by Mega Man 5
"Mega Man Legends for your PC, somewhat enhanced."
Mega Man Legends was originally released for the PS1, then later ported to the N64 in 2001 and the PC later that year. And just recently, Mega Man Legends has also been ported to the PSP. Is this port any good? Here is my review for the PC version of the game:
Graphics: 8/10
The graphics have been enhanced with Anti-aliasing support and brighter colors. While it could still use a bit of work (Round objects like fire hydrants and trash cans could be a little rounder), at least the aren't pixellated and there is far less polygon tearing. Not bad, more realistic than the PS1 version.
Animation: 7/10
No difference, the characters still animate the same as in the PS1 version. Mega Man has smooth animations, each character in the game has facial expressions and actually move their mouths when talking. It's a bit goofy, and it's anime style but it's decent. At least, for once, the characters don't have heads and mouths that are about 5 or 6 feet large like alot of anime style characters.
Play control: 5/10-7/10
Ouch. If you're using your keyboard, this game doesn't control well. I recommend getting a controller. With the controller, the controls are about as good as the PS1 version. That's decent, but even the PS1 version didn't have the greatest control. The controls are not as good as the N64 version.
Music: 9/10
All the music from the PS1 version is intact, nothing has been omitted (Unlike the N64 version). You can also put the CD into your CD player or PC and listen to the soundtrack without having to play the game. However, unlike the other 3 versions, the music needs to stop and restart in the PC version which is a bit annoying but it's not bad.
Gameplay: 10/10
Even after 7 years of playing the PS1 version, I still haven't had enough of Mega Man Legends. The GamePlay is unchanged and is the same as the PS1 version with no additional areas or sidequests, but the PS1 version already had lots you could do. You'll be finding parts, crystal shards, keys, energy, etc. There are tons of sidequests, but more on that below.
Replay Value: 9/10
If you do get this game, you'll want to come back. This game is loaded with sidequests. So what you do and don't do effects the ending slightly, so there are plenty of different versions of the games' ending.
Extras: 3/10
Nothing much. The PC version doesn't include all the extras from the N64 version. You can listen to the soundtrack in a CD player, there are two screen sizes, and the games' plot has been enhanced slightly. Interestingly, like the N64 version, the PC version has no load times (Once you see the game appear on your screen, there's no loading at all after that).
Overall: 8/10
Mega Man Legends, in my opinion, is still a great game today. This PC port is nearly identical to the PS1 in almost every way, except for the graphics and the addition of a few extras. If you have one of the other 3 versions of MML, this is not worth getting as it's almost no different and there's barely any extras. If not and you find this game for 20 bucks or less and play PC games, then go for it.
