World of Warcraft lacks all the things that make a good role-playing game, except for equipmet and area size.

Graphics

World of Warcraft is not about graphics. It never was about graphics, but it may sometimes be about graphics. Even though all of this is very paradoxal in a manner, you might wonder why I decided to put a Graphics section into my quick-review. Well, the reason is this simple: if the textures look like 2.5 different colours mixed together into a blurry mass, it really makes you less happy altogether. World of Warcraft is severly lacking in resolution, textures and lighting- the character models are horrible and the cities look more like vomit than like cities.

Audio

There is nothing to complain about the music and sounds in World of Warcraft- the music is often enjoyable and doesn't bother the player. The occasional grunts of enemies and player characters is sometimes annoying, though.

Gameplay

So, you begin the game by choosing your race: Tauren, Undead, Orc, Human, Troll, Night Elf, Gnome, Dwarf (and if you have the Burning Crusade Expansion pack, Draenei and Blood Elf are included). You can choose your own class, and start to play. Generally, a beginner will ask NPCs for a few quests, and start completing them while leveling steadily. This is where the boring part begins. You will level so slowly, you play the game for hours and hours to advance. It will just become a slow, slow combination of kill, run, go fetch quests, kill, run, go fetch quests etc. The quests mainly have 1 theme: kill * enemies or gather * items and return the quest, with a few exceptions like kill * enemies and save Bob or whatever. The quests are far from innovating, and a hard-core gamer would probably not like to kill and run continously. Still, some fun can be squeezed out if you play with a friend. World of Warcraft is a “massive multiplayer online” game, and you can enjoy the company of your friends virtual characters.

Combat

I thought that it would be necessary to include combat to the review, it being nearly the only thing you do (except for running). The combat system has an idea, but it is poorly created, being very much just clicking different icons on the screen. You would generally run around a bit and jump, but this might cause you to look the other way and your spell/other combat move to miss. All in all, the combat is boring.

Closing Comments

If you are a friend of very continous, mindless running around and slaughtering beasts, you might just get this game. But if not, it is not worth the 15 dollars a month (or about 13 euros, the euro being a more stable currency). If you want a good role-playing game, you might considering something like Oblivion or Morrowind.
