"Have xxx guests in your park by the end of year y wth park rating zzz"
Roller Coaster Tycoon II is basically the same as its predecessors. There's no plot to the game, except simple scenarios all with their own gimmick. What Roller Coaster simply in a nutshell is, is Roller Coaster Tycoon bundled with all its expansion packs, and a few more Shops and Stalls. However, for those of you who haven't played the predecessor, here's a review:
Graphics: 7/10. Everything looks like it is supposed to. Roller coasters look like roller coasters. Trees look like trees. The graphics aren't too realistic, and sometimes can lack detail. Personally, the best graphics of this game is the scenery given, or that can be added in. Which is a little sad for a game supposed to be about roller coasters.
Control: 9/10. Its not an action game, and like most simulation games, it is played by navigating through menus and picking options. These menu's are simple to navigate, but there are a few things which get tedious. Assigning every single mechanic and handyman so they can be most effective gets very tedious. Building between above and below ground can be irritating at times because of the rules of how the coaster must enter the ground and how the ground must be pre-shaped.
Music/Sound: 9/10. It sounds like a theme park. In crowded areas guests chatter. When roller coasters get cranking it sounds realistic, and when they start flying down the tracks, and people scream, it does have a park feel to it. Rides can be set to play music, which is a nice touch, but for some reason they're always quieter than the merry-go-round which is always making music, and can be heard more than anything else. Which is annoying. Especially after a while.
Fun Factor: 5/10. The original roller coaster tycoon had a good fun factor of about 8 or 9. The reason roller coaster tycoon gets a 5 is because it just about IS the original. This game adds very little after purchasing the original and its two expansion packs. A few shops and stalls here, a little scenery there, for the most part its all been done. The Levels are terribly monotonous with the first game, and are not creative at all. At best I would call this the 3rd expansion pack to the original.
buy this game? It depends. If you own the original Roller Coaster Tycoon or any of its expansion packs, probably not, because this wont be giving you anything new that you really haven't seen. If you've never played the original, then by all means, try this game out.
