"A good way to spend two hours"
The Movies is a game in which you control a movie studio and makes movies, though you don't have much control in either aspect.
You start off in the 1920's by building your movie studio. You do this by adding Casting offices and things like that. And then you need to hire people. Like Director's, Actor's, Extra's, Movie Crew, and even Janitor's. To do this, you just pick up random people off the street. So if you want a female actress and there isn't one lined up outside your building, then you're pretty much screwed. Why couldn't I have been able to have control over that? Each actor pretty much has pro's and con's. Like for example, you hired a really beautiful actress, but she has a drinking problem and is easily stressed. However, it doesn't seem too difficult to stop their addictions from developing into huge problems.
Then after you've built everything you need and have all of your actors, etc. You can start making movies. Sadly, you really aren't given all that much control. You have the choice of deciding what movie genre you want, then it's up to the writers from there. Choices of genres include: Comedy, Horror, Romance, Sci-Fi and Action. You can decide what you want to happen in a scene by using sliders. There's never a huge array of options, though. For example, you're making a horror movie and in the scene where your actor dies, you can decide what direction he falls and perhaps a camera angle choice, if you're lucky. The end product is a movie that lasts anywhere from 30 seconds to one minute and makes little to no sense.
There is some great humour to be found in this game, though. Like the reviews your movies get are always very funny and clever. Even some of the descriptions on items are worth a chuckle. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a game that was meant to be funny.
Think somewhere between The Sims and The Sims 2. It's like the first Sims in that the characters are more realistic than cartoony looking. And it's like The Sims 2 because they have facial expressions and stuff like that. Everything else like sets and building are nice, but nothing great.
The music sounds good, but it's very forgettable. The voices from your actors are just usually grunts and undecipherable mumbles. But like the voices on the radio and award shows sound great. You get sound effects like building's being constructed and stuff like that. Everything is pretty good.
Should you buy this game?
I'd have to say no. After playing this for two hours, you've seen everything you can do and whatever time spent playing after that is just doing the same things again and again.
