*1* INTRODUCTION

This guide is intended for players who wish to finish the game in record time.
Note that I do not claim that this is *the* fastest path to finish the game,
but it is fast enough. Following this guide, you should be able to finish in
around an hour.

Personally, I am not #1 on the leaderboards, but I am in the top 10, as of the
creation of this guide. Take that what you will. 

I wrote this because almost all of the existing guides for this game are a
long narrative of what to do.. and for the people who want to speed run, all
the details are pretty unnecessary, it's more about just knowing what to do,
where to go, and most importantly, in what ORDER to do them in! So this guide
is just that, a listing of a fast path through the game.

This guide contains minimal spoilers, however it is recommended that you play
through the game at least once to make the best use of it.

Although this guide was written with the XBLA version in mind (since it uses a
leaderboard ranking system), it obviously applies to all versions of this game.

*2* GENERAL SUGGESTIONS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- In the Special Edition UI, you can move Guybrush and then bring up the
  action/item menus WHILE he is still walking. This may save you a few seconds,
  which will ultimately save you a few minutes in the long run.

- If you're playing the PC version, LEARN TO HOT KEY. You'll be doing it a lot.

- If you're playing the XBLA version, it's much more frustrating because you
  don't have a mouse. So, save often, reload if you "miss" with your mouse too
  much.

- Certain events of this game are entirely skippable and extraneous.. for
  example, buying the "map" from the Citizen of Melee is completely useless.
  Watch out for other "skippable" events just in case I included them!

- The insult fighting part will undoubtedly be the biggest time waster of a
  speed run. Unfortunately it's just going to take a lot of reloads and a bit
  of luck to get the right set of insults, and then beating the swordmaster.

*3* SPEED RUN WALKTHROUGH

This guide will only list the actions you need to do. I will specify the talk
actions you need to do, but if nothing is specified, it means you can say
anything, or even skip the scene. Skipped scenes are NOT listed, so pay
attention to what you can skip!!

Once again, this guide is much more useful if you've played the game before.
I make the assumption that you at least know where all the various places of
the game are.

                                    PART ONE
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VILLAGE (SCUMM BAR)
- Go to the right screen, wait for the cook to come out.
- Walk into kitchen after cook leaves the screen.
- Pick up HUNK OF MEAT and the POT.
- Step on the loose plank 3 times, and on the third time, pick up the FISH
  before the bird lands again.

CLEARING
- Agree to the cannon shooting.
- Give POT to Fettucini Brothers, get 478 PIECES OF EIGHT.

VILLAGE (VOODOO LADY)
- Pick up the CHICKEN.

VILLAGE (PRISON)
- Attempt to talk to Otis.

VILLAGE (SHOP)
- Pick up SHOVEL, and SWORD.
- Talk to shopkeeper, buy SHOVEL, SWORD, and BREATH MINTS.
- Ask shopkeeper to show you to the swordmaster. Follow him.

WORLD MAP
- Follow shopkeeper to swordmaster.

SWORDMASTER'S
- Leave immediately.
- Go back into the forest.

FOREST
- Go to the upper LEFT passage. Pick up the yellow flowers.
- Go LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, UP, RIGHT, LEFT, UP.
- Use SHOVEL with X.

BRIDGE
- Give FISH to troll.

HOUSE
- Open (knock) door.
- Repeatedly say you do have what it takes.
- Say you have 30 pieces of eight.
- Show SWORD.

WORLD MAP
- Save before you fight any pirates. Reload as necessary.
- If you need an insult guide, you should probably find another guide to read,
  then come back to this one!
- Defeat three pirates in sword fighting. Note that you only need a few insults
  to beat the swordmaster. I recommend learning 7-8 and repeatedly reload.

SWORDMASTER'S
- Save before you fight the swordmaster. Reload as necessary.
- Defeat the swordmaster.

VILLAGE (MANSION)
- Use MEAT with YELLOW PETAL.
- Give MEAT WITH CONDIMENT to guard dogs.
- Open mansion door, enter.
- Open the door next to the vase, enter.

VILLAGE (PRISON)
- Give BREATH MINTS to Otis, immediately say you have to leave.
- Give GOPHER REPELLANT to Otis, get CAKE.
- Use/Open CAKE, get FILE.

VILLAGE (MANSION)
- Enter gaping hole.

ISLAND
- Use CHICKEN with CABLE.
- Say the governor has been kidnapped.
- Say we should assemble a crew.
- Open small door. Any action on bird.

SWORDMASTER'S
- Say the governor has been kidnapped.

LIGHTS / STAN'S USED EMPORIUM
- Say you don't have very much to spend.
- Ask if Stan will take credit.
- Say you want to look at another ship, then leave.

VILLAGE (SCUMM BAR)
- Pick up 3 MUGS (you don't need all of them).
- Go to kitchen, use MUG with BARREL.
- Use MELTING MUG with an empty MUG as necessary, or every new screen.

PRISON
- Use MELTING MUG with LOCK.

VILLAGE (SHOP)
- Ask store keeper for a note of credit, say you have a job.
- DO NOT skip his animation until you see him put in the password.
- Say anything, he will put the note of credit back, skip only if you already
  know the password.
- Ask him to go to the Swordmaster's again.
- Open the safe while he is gone.

LIGHTS / STAN'S USED EMPORIUM
- Ask to see the same ship.
- Talk about the extras. Say you don't need any of them.
- Repeat this until the extras loop.
- Make an offer. Start with 2000, then work yourself up until he accepts.

VILLAGE (DOCK)
- Say anything, skip events, etc.

CAPTAIN'S QUARTERS
- Pick up FEATHER PEN, pick up INK.

CROW'S NEST
- Pick up JOLLY ROGER.

HATCH
- Open chest on the very right. Look at chest to get FINE WINE.
- Pick up ROPE on the barrels near by.
- Pick up kegs to get GUNPOWDER.

KITCHEN
- Open cabinet.
- Pick up CEREAL. Open CEREAL, open PRIZE, get KEY.
- Pick up POT.

CAPTAIN'S QUARTERS
- Use KEY in cabinet.
- Pick up CHEST, open it. Get NOTE and CINNAMON STICKS.

KITCHEN
- Use the following with the pot:
  - CEREAL, JOLLY ROGER, INK, BREATH MINTS, FINE WINE, CHICKEN,
    CINNAMON STICKS, GUNPOWDER (you can use more, but this is the minimum)
- Use FEATHER PEN with fire to get the BURNING MASS.

HATCH
- Pick up kegs for GUNPOWDER.

SHIP
- Use the GUNPOWDER with the cannon nozzle.
- Use the ROPE with the cannon.
- Use the BURNING MASS with the cannon.
- Walk to cannon nozzle.

                                  PART THREE
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FORT
- Push cannon, pick up GUNPOWDER, CANNON BALL, ROPE.
- Note: you should be able to do all this before Herman Toothrot appears.
  Also, you don't need the spyglass!

RIVER FORK
- Move the art / rock thing twice to YOUR (player's) left.
- Go up the path, push the rock to hit the banana tree.
- Go back down, pick up ROCK and NOTE.
- Use GUNPOWDER with dam. Use ROCK (flint) with CANNON BALL.

POND
- Pick up ROPE.

CRACK
- Use ROPE(x2) with strong branch and sturdy stump.
- Pick up OARS.

BEACH (SOUTH)
- Pick up BANANAS(x3)
- Use OARS with boat.

CANNIBAL'S
- Pick up BANANAS.
- Tell them to just eat you.
- Pick up skull, pick up loose board, escape.

WORLD MAP
- Land near clearing (middle beach).
- Go to the monkey. Feed it BANANAS(x5).

CLEARING / MONKEY HEAD
- Pull the nose on the statue. The monkey following you will imitate.
- Go to the Monkey Head, pick up Lemonhead's IDOL.

CANNIBAL'S
- Say you are a mighty pirate or beg them not to eat you.
- Give IDOL to cannibals.
- Go to the hut, pick up BANANA PICKER.
- Give BANANA PICKER to Herman Toothrot, get MONKEY HEAD KEY.

WORLD MAP
- Re-enter the CANNIBAL'S area.

CANNIBAL'S
- Say you want help finding someone, etc., then you are off to find LeChuck.
- Say anything after they start speaking pig latin.
- Give LEAFLET to friendly natives.

CLEARING / MONKEY HEAD
- Use MONKEY HEAD KEY in MONKEY HEAD EAR.
- Enter monkey head, use HEAD OF THE NAVIGATOR and follow his directions.

PIRATE SHIP (OUTSIDE)
- Before entering the ship, talk to the HEAD OF THE NAVIGATOR.
- You can either repeatedly ask nicely for the necklace, or threaten him
  until he gives it to you.
- Use NECKLACE.
- Enter the pirate ship.

PIRATE SHIP (INSIDE)
- In LeChuck's room (left), use MAGNETIC COMPASS with KEY to get the KEY.
- In the hatch, go past the sleeping ghost, pick up the ghost chicken to
  get a FEATHER.
- Go back to the sleeping ghost, use the FEATHER on his foot twice.
- Pick up GROG.
- Go back to the animal area, use the KEY with the hatch.
- Go down, use the GROG with the rat's bowl.
- Pick up GREASE, and go all the way back to the main ship area.
- Use the GREASE on the creaky door, enter.
- Pick up TOOLS.
- Go back to the animal area, use TOOLS with the box.
- Look at the box to get the ROOT.
- Exit the ghost ship area, and the game will auto-transport you to...

CANNIBAL'S
- Leave the area, and the game will auto-transport you to...

PIRATE SHIP (OUTSIDE)
- Ask where the pirates went. Say you're going after them.
- Tell your crew you're going back to Melee Island.

VILLAGE
- Self-explanatory from here on... use the ROOT BEER as needed.
- Go to the church, whenever given the chance, tell LeChuck to eat root beer.
- Note: DO NOT get into the weird "-ility" argument with LeChuck!

LIGHTS / STAN'S USED EMPORIUM
- Use ROOT BEER with LeChuck.

Congrats! After the credits roll (yes you have to watch..), your score will be
updated on the XBLA leaderboard... if you were playing the XBLA version.
