    prices. In some cases, with a high enough appraise skill, you can actually buy
    for less then you sell.

    Merchant Name: = Name of merchant being described
    100%/50% = Selling/Buying multiplier for items, multiply the base cost of the
               item by the percentile listed here to get the (pre-appraise roll)
        merchant cost/price
    Stolen: = Percentile applied when selling (not buying) trap kits
    Max Sale = Highest value they will buy an item at
    *!Low: = Lowest sale value I've gotten
    *!Avg: = The average of the 20 values I've gotten
    *!High: = Highest sale value I've gotten
    *Expanded: = The actual 20 sale values, in order, that I've gotten in my testing
           phase
    
      *These values are based on selling a Potion of Endurance (Base Cost=120) with
       an appraise skill modifier of +12 (10 ranks plus 2 for INT 14). Higher
       appraise values will translate into better sale prices (the reverse is also
       true).
    
      !The percentiles in parenthesis show approximately what percentage of the base

        OVERVIEW
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    
    For characters with an appraise value less then 5, it is best to sell to either
    the Tavern Keeper or Gru'ul in chapter 3. Since their prices are not affected
    by appraise.
    
    For characters with an appraise value of 5-20, the best merchants to sell items
    that are worth less then 10,000g are the two chapter 2 Duergar Merchants. For
    traps, sell to either Gru'ul or the Tavern Keeper. For everything else, sell
    to Rizolvir in chapter 3.
    
    For characters with a 21+ appraise value it is best to sell items that are worth
    less then 10,000g to either the Duergar Merchants or Cult Knights in chapter 2.
    Traps should go to Gru'ul or the Tavern Keeper. Everything else goes to
    Rizolvir in chapter 3.

    Volkarion's store adds new items each chapter as long as you've played through
    the chapter in question. If you just start a new game in chapter 2 then he will
    only have his chapter 2 inventory, the same thing goes for starting a new game
    in any other chapter.
    
    Also, each time you summon him the game does a new appraise check, even if it
    hasn't changed since the last time he was summoned.
    
    His inventory list is also interesting. It's run by a unique script that checks
    what chapter your in, what's currently in the inventory, and your character
    class and level to determine what actually shows up. Due to this fact, the
    inventory lists presented below are only the items that are guaranteed to show
    up. Other items will appear depending upon the variables listed earlier.

        MAKING MONEY
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    
    As you may or may not have noticed, certain merchants in the game will sell
    things for cheaper then they'll buy them for. This basically lets you earn
    unlimited gold.
    
    The merchants to go to depend on your appraise score. The Blacksmith, Duergar
    Merchants, and Cult Knight all seem to require an appraise skill of at least
    12. Rizolvir in chapter 3 requires one of 36.

    Merchants are listed in alphabetical order, so just use the find/search command
    of your browser/word processor to jump to specific merchants.

    Q. Why did you use the potion of Endurance to test the prices?
    A. It has a nice, even base price and I was garenteed to have one on my
       character the whole game.

    This is thanks to JJ Alger, it's all his research and words:
    
    On average, 1 point in appraise skill means you sell for 1% more of an item's
    base cost, and buy for 1% less. When you first open a merchant's store an
    opposed appraise check is made - your modified appraise skill (appraise + INT
    modifier) vs. the merchant's modified appraise. Most merchants, by the way,
    have modified appraise of 1. Each of you rolls 1d10 and adds that to your
    modified skill. Take your result, subtract the merchant's result, and you have
    the change in percent of base value of item you can buy and sell for.
    
    Example: A merchant with modified appraise of 5 rolls a 7; your character,
    with modified appraise 10, rolls a 5. The cost to buy from that merchant
    decreases by 3% of an item's value, and the value to sell increases by 3%.
    
    In more depth: The relevant function is gplotAppraiseOpenStore, which is in
    the nw_i0_plot script. It starts by getting the player's skill and the
    merchant's skill. If the merchant is charmed, dire charmed, dominated, or
    some such and you nevertheless manage to strike up a conversation with him
    and open his store, then the GetNPCEasyMark can kick in and give you a nice
    price reduction: -10, -15, or -20 to his Appraise skill, depending on what
    particular brand of enchantment he's under. Negative player skill ranks are
    allowed, but NPC skills have a floor of 1 (even if they naturally have
    appraise 2 and you charm them, it only acts like appraise skill 1).
    
    Then the game checks to see if your appraise skill has increased since you
    last visited; if it hasn't you use the result from last time.
    Should you actually get to make an appraise check, it runs the following

            nPlayerSkillRank = nPlayerSkillRank + d10();

    Then it does some checks and whatnot, and finishes by hard-capping nAdjust to
    the -30 to +30 range:
        if (nAdjust > 30)
            nAdjust = 30;
        if (nAdjust < -30)
            nAdjust = -30;
    
    It then effectively calls:
        OpenStore(oStore, oPC, nAdjust, -nAdjust);
    
    So for example, Rizolvir in chapter 2 has a sell mark-up of 150, a buy
    mark-down of 35 as base. Rizolvir has appraise skill 0, and 0 intelligence, so
    his appraise skill should be a 0. The gplotAppraiseOpenStore method raises NPC
    appraises to at least 1, so his appraise base is going to be 1. If you have an
    appraise skill of 40, then even if you roll a 1 and he rolls a 10 your
    appraise check will be 41 and his 11; that means nAdjust is 30 (the maximum
    allowed) and prices are swung by 30% in each direction. Then you would expect
    to buy at 120% and sell at 65%. It also means that any merchant for whom the
    difference between the buy and sell base values is less than 60 can be
    profited from through buying and re-selling, although it requires that your
    appraise skill be at least 21 points higher than theirs.
    
    Example: Rizolvir's ghost in chapter 3 has 100/50 sell/buy, and has 0 appraise
    skill and 10 INT. This means his base Appraise is 0, but will be automatically
    set to 1 as 1 is the minimum NPC appraise skill. So the range for his appraise
    checks is 2-11. If you have INT 14 and appraise 8, your modified appraise skill
    is 10, and thus the range for your appraise checks is 11-20. If you roll a 1
    and he rolls a 10, you tie the appraise roll and you will sell at 50 and buy at
    100. If, on the other hand, you roll a 10 and he rolls a 1, you will buy at 82
    and sell at 68. The most likely outcome, of course, is that you buy at 91 and
    sell at 59.
    
    Three noteworthy implications:
    
    1. There is a maximum "useful" appraise skill value for most merchants. The
       vast majority of merchants have INT 10 and appraise 0, so they'll have a
       minimum check of 2 and a maximum of 11. If you're willing to be patient and
       keep reloading for the 1% of the time you roll a 10 and the merchant rolls
       a 1, you can get just as good results with appraise 22 as with any higher
       appraise. If you aren't that patient or think that's cheating, an appraise
       skill of 40 guarantees an optimal result. Both of those are the modified
       values of course. So in theory a high-level wizard with intelligence 26, a
       ring of clear thought +10, a potion of fox's cunning, and an appraise skill
       of 8 could (with sufficient reloading) get just as good results as if he had
       appraise 9+. If he wanted to be confident in his results, he'd need to max
       appraise at 20 and somehow boost his intelligence to the sky-high level of
       54.
    
    2. You can profit from selling to merchants if, and only if, the difference
       between their buy and sell base values is less than 60 and they take into
       account appraise skill. With Rizolvir's ghost, for example, you can at most
       make a 10% profit on each sale of an item. The ideal item would be one such
       that 80% of it's base value is almost exactly 50,000 gold, or a base value of
       around 62,500 gold; you could make a profit of 6.25k gold each time you
       bought and re-sold it. Eyes of Petrification would be an excellent choice.
    
    3. It looks, on face value, like in a few bizarre circumstances it might be
       possible to get a negative sale price. If trading with White Thesta in
       chapter 1 of HOTU, the base sale value is 12%. If White Thesta rolls a 10,
       you roll a 1, and your intelligence is 1, you end up with her appraise check
       at 11 and yours at -4, so the sale value should be -3%. I'm unsure what would
       happen in this case; it might be that the OpenStore method checks for this
       just in case or it might be you could actually bankrupt yourself selling
       items.
