Quarantine
Review by desolation00
"Fun Doom clone, with a unique design, lots of charm, and even more gore"
There are Doom clones, and then there are Doom clones. This is a Doom clone.
One of the few games soon after Doom came out that really took a creative look at what could be done with the engine. You are a hovercar cabbie in a locked down prison city run by a mega-corporation that may or may not be using the inhabitants as guinea pigs. Your goal is to get the heck out of dodge. So as a hovercar cabbie in a locked down city, you do what hovercar cabbies do. Take fares, upgrade your weapon layout, and take it to the man in big blow-uppy gore-filled mayhem. Do be certain to wash off the bumper from time to time.
Graphics 9/10
Put some really unique visuals and a good setting on top of the Doom engine and you're in for some good old-school fun. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of repetition on visuals, but that goes with the tech available in 1995.
Gameplay 8/10
Smooth controls and tons of fun running over pedestrians just to get more out of a fare. The open (well sort of) world is one of the first I'd ever played through. Repetitive missions and lack of variety is the chief downside, this is more of a game to blow off steam while blowing off heads. You never do leave your cab, but it would probably be suicide given the situation anyhow.
Story 7/10
Hardly a page turner. You may come to like some of the twisted characters but the story is a means to an end, and the end is some really fun gameplay. The story does establish the setting fairly well though.
Auido 10/10
Another first experience for me in a videogame. Quarantine has a fully licensed soundtrack, with a nice variety of alt and slightly metalish mid-90's music. Nobody anybody has heard of, but very high quality. If this game was able to be found anywhere for $10 it would be worth it just for the music alone. I only hope the real post-apocalyptic future has music this good.
Overall 8/10
This game has held up remarkably well, especially compared to most other Doom wannabes that came out in the mid 90's. Have fun playing if you can get hold of a copy. As far as I can tell that might be difficult...
*Disclaimer* this review may be total nostalgic BULL.
Now it's time to sing the Doom song. Doom doom doomie doom doom doomie doom...
