Leisure Suit Larry In the Land of the Lounge Lizards
Review by Mike.J
"A Heartwarming Game about a 40 year olds desparate attempts to get laid...."
This game was a big part of the beginning of the big PC game craze in the late 80's. This was the game that made AL Low a big name in computer games and Leisure Suit Larry a hit series.
Plot: 9/10
In the game you are Larry Laugher, a 40 year old man who has just been kicked from his mother's house to get a life of his own. Larry hits the town dressed like a 70's disco-man looking to get laid and find love in any way possible. Why doesn't he just use a slick pickup line, or be himself, well, the game would not be fun if it were that easy. Instead you have to guide Larry around town to utilize objects solve puzzles to find his way to ecstatic/romantic bliss. The plot falls in very well with the game.
Graphics: 8/10
The Graphics in the game are the best you will find in a 1987- computer game unless you concider a text mode of ASCII characters graphics. For it's time the graphics are very well done, and the palette is proper for the game, it gives it that big city feel that it must have with all the neons used in the lighting. The characters don't look as good as a NES game from the same era, but most of that is Televisions have a tendency to blur pixels, look at Super Mario Bros. on an Emulator and on a Color T.V. and you'll see the difference. where the graphics shines though is every character has their own personality and even the objects have their own off screen graphics.
Sound: 5/10
The sound in this game is typical of a game from this period, mostly just single note voices played through an internal speaker. The Theme sounds really nice though. And in this game and makes a good use of fills to make it sound fuller than it really is.
Control/Gameplay: 7/10
This was where most of these side scrolling semi-action/RPG games started. You type in things like ''Use Hammer with Nail'' and ''Use Arm In Chipper Shredder'' to make your way around the game. The computer won't recognize certain words in certain contexts and other words will not be reconized at all. There is also a taskbar activated when you hit escape allowing you to see such things as the items you are carrying (with close up graphics), and even perform bodily functions and see what time it is in the game universe.
Overall: 7/10
This game has alot of plusses, and is fun, but it does have some annoying things (PC speaker music and no point-and-click). But this is a good way to see how famous series got started including Leisure Suit Larry and even the Monkey Island series.
