01.) INTRODUCTION G0100
===============================================================================

Welcome to 'Nancy Drew: Message in a Haunted House' for the PC, an adventure
game released by Her Interactive in 2000. There is also a GameBoy Advance game
by the same name, and it features the same story and puzzles. However, the
timing of events has been altered into a more chapter style event so one does
not miss as many optional things than in the PC game. If you are playing the
GBA game, then do not follow this walkthrough.

Suggestions, comments or errors - email me about it. Enjoy!

===============================================================================
02.) BASICS G0200
===============================================================================

You control the game mainly with the mouse. Interact with objects when the
magnifying glass becomes red, move if it turns into an arrow. It is not too
often that you can turn around freely. You can also use the directional keys to
move left and right.

Note that if you open a chest or drawer you will also have to close it again to
move along. I won't mention this in the walkthrough at each instance. The same
goes for knocking and opening doors, that is really something you should be
able to figure out to be playing any adventure game.

There are many more features the game holds the walkthrough does not mention,
as there are already solved for you and therefore more or less extra contents.
The game is a little tricky whether some things are important to check or if
one can just miss out on it. The more thorough the better, but I believe only
the stuff mentioned in the walkthrough are really necessary.

The game offers two different difficulty levels. They do not alter the crime
solving in any way, but instead make the puzzles harder. The story will always
be the same. I will only mention the Junior puzzles, because I would think you
chose the other mode for challenge. Should you have trouble solving the advance
puzzles, play on Junior!

Time plays an important role in the game. Check the work schedule in the dining
room to see who is (un)available at what times. Next to Nancy's bed is an alarm
clock you can set to wake up at a certain time to either avoid or meet people
around the house.

03.) WALKTHROUGH G0300
===============================================================================

Start by reading the tapestry with the poem next to the door. On Junior mode
Nancy will read it, get used to not having these hints on Senior mode. Unlock
your suitcase and read the journal. Then go over to the fireplace and look
closely at the jade statue to find the DAUGHTER hanzi.

Get used to the mansion's locations. You will be moving around a lot in it and
it shouldn't be too hard to find you way around. Just take note of the short-
cut from the 2nd floor to the corridor below to avoid the main entrance area.

Leave the room and speak to Abby in her room in the other corridor. At the top
of the main entrance staircase are some moveable banisters. Move them to spell
D-I-E-G-O to reveal a key. Take it. Enter the corridor underneath and talk to
Rose in the dining room. She will ask you to finish a puzzle in the floor. Look
down and move the tiles into their slots. You can rotate them as necessary. The
square should be in the upper right area. Make sure there are no white lines
anywhere. Afterwards talk to Rose once more. Turn around and look at the work
schedule near the tea set. Make note of the times. Open the nearby drawer and
look at the FIRE hanzi.

Go down to the basement and talk to Charlie. Open up the piano chair and read
the paper with the RIVER hanzi on it.Return to the entrance and look at the
repairs going on here. Move a tool to reveal a paint scraper. Pick it up. Go to
your room and use the paint scraper on the bedpost. Take the key.

Set your alarm for 3PM and then enter Abby's room. Look inside the desk for the
MOON hanzi. In the corner is a book called "The Zodiac and You", read it.

Back in your room, set your alarm for after Charlie is gone (5PM), then return
to the basement. Look at the old cash register and press the last button on the
right to open it up. Grab the key to the attic. In the corridor, look at the
ceiling of the work area and use the paint scraper to remove all with water
damage. Use the key you just found to open up the attic.

Up here, take the crowbar in the toolbox, the iron from the box near the doll's
head and the tile. Unlock the writing desk and find a paper with the BEGINNING
hanzi written on it. Also read the notes with a music piece written on them. If
you try to open the attic trapdoor once more it will rip. Thus use the crowbar
to open it up.

Go back to sleep until around 3PM the next day. Walk downstairs and open the
dumbwaiter window. Attach the iron on the rope. Look at the broken cup for the
EYE hanzi. Also take the second tile. Enter the library through the parlor and
talk to Louis, he leaves at 5PM so I hope you didn't spent too long on the last
part or you have to wait for the next day. On the right side as you came in,
there is a mahjong set. Look at the first few pieces to find the FOUR hanzi.
Look on the left side of the desk's bookcases and move them to find the third
and last tile. Insert all three tiles above the fireplace. When Louis is gone,
pull the golden bird underneath to open a secret corridor. Go inside and take
the lantern. Examine the painting and find that the name is the CHILD hanzi.

Go down into the basement, Charlie should be gone by now. Play the piano if you
wish, I think it's optional. If you do, play B E G A G. From left to right that
would be the 2nd, 6th, 4th, 5th and 4th key. You can pick up a piece of paper
that fits to the stuff in the attic. Use the crowbar on the grating in the
fireplace. The light the lantern to go through the narrow opening. On the side,
look at the KING hanzi on the Chinese takeaway box. Pick up the disk and read
the items you wish to. The door across from where you came from leads up to the
first floor.

Use the laptop in the library. First insert the disk at the very bottom right.
If you see the laptop view with the cursor still as the disk then you didn't do
it properly. Now view the computer screen.

Username: Louis
Password: Antique

Read the info, especially on the disk.

Return to your room and read the journal. Go to sleep until the next day and
talk to Rose, Abby, Charlie and Louie until they all have nothing more to say.
Return to your room and read the journal once more. As you leave you should
receive a letter slipped underneath the door. If not, talk to everyone again
and make sure you read all the hanzi up to this point.

Go down into the parlor, you'll notice some smoke on the left side. Turn into
the left corner as you enter, open up the corner cabinet and take out the fire
extinguisher. Use it on the fire.

After the scene, talk to Rose and then talk Charlie, Abby and Louie until they
have nothing more to say to you. You may need to sleep again till noon the next
day afterwards, then enter the secret corridor in the library when Louie is
away even though the schedule says he should be there. If not, try coming back
later. Inside the room, go up the small wall and remove the loose brick. Look
through the holes to see Charlie doing something. Outside, open up the
briefcase with the combinations 4653 - 4868 as you saw on the computer. Read
everything inside the briefcase, especially the stuff about 'Gum Bo Fu'.

Use the phone in the parlor to call Emily. She talks a lot, but will eventually
mention 'Gum Bo Fu'. Talk to Rose, Abby and Charlie about what it could mean.
When you confront Louie, make sure you say that you read it in a magazine,
although the latter is a quick way to end the game. Talk to Rose once more and
she should mention about the tapestry and a letter.

Go up to your room and look at the letter on the chair. Read the GOLDEN hanzi.
On the right side of your bed are some zodiac carvings. Look at it to start the
next puzzle. You need to press them in a certain order.

Rat - Ox - Tiger - Rabbit - Dragon - Snake - Horse - Goat - Monkey - Rooster -
 Dog - Boar.

Next up, you need to enter the right combination into the safe. Press the
small arrow at the top to confirm entry and restart by pushing the dial in the
center. Starting with the CHILD hanzi, move the dial for all 10. (rough

After you open the safe, insert the Chinese character medallion you found in
the staircase earlier. It will reveal yet another puzzle. You need to turn over
all the tiles. The junior puzzle is not too hard. Each tile turns over the
adjacent ones. Senior is slightly harder as you need to move around like a
knight in a chess game.

Next is a very unoriginal sliding puzzle. The picture is a phoenix from a the
entrance floor. The Senior puzzle has more tiles to move around. Each level has
the same picture though, and the top right corner is blank.

Finally, take the jewel and go to the entrance hall. One phoenix statue on the
staircase is missing an eye, so insert the jewel.

After the scene run up the right side of the stairs and down the left side one
step. You can see the chandelier rope, unhook it three times to end the game.
If you are too slow just try again, don't try to go up the left stairs
directly.

Congratulations on finishing the game!
