"A Zillion times better than the steaming hunk of crap known as Oregon Trail 4"
A lot of PC games are good (This game). Some games are good but they mess up your computer (Frogger. So what if I made him run into trucks on purpose?). Then there are downright horrible PC games that should be placed in the rotting landfill that 20 million copies of E.T. for the Atari 2600 lie in (Oregon Trail 4). I swear, four CDs for nothing but a black screen that says loading and a bit of hunting? Anyway, this has to be one of the best edutainment games of all time. If you read any of these sections that stay crunchy in milk, you'll get the point.
Okay, so there weren't Conestoga wagons on the actual Oregon Trail, but this game is pretty accurate on the details. You start out with as many party members as you like (but not over a certain amount), and you enter their names. This makes your fantasy of Led Zeppelin and Harry Potter on the Oregon Trail a reality. You choose a profession and your position. You don't have to go on the Oregon Trail (OK- Whaaaa?). You can go on the Mormon Trail, the California Gold Rush trail (It helps if you're a prospector), and that other trail. You go acroos the country, and you meet people at forts (Where you buy supplies and haggle) or Indian villages (Most of them want you to leave). At the end, it tells you what happens to your guy and how much land you get. You also keep a diary, so you can look back on the stuff that happened. Oh. And people can die (So maybe having Harry Potter and Led Zeppelin isn't such a good idea after all). Whether it be drowning, disease, or thirst, they die.
The people look realistic, yet only 2D. The animal animations vary from animal to animal, and the scenery pictures were nicely taken.
Pretty realistic sounds. People speak clearly, gun shots sound real, and mosquitos sound as real as ever (which means annoying).
The main theme is catchy, and you WILL be humming it every now and then. Also, when you're near a cliff or a steep hill, it plays tense music.
You just type in stuff and click buttons. Boring, but extremely accessible, hence the 10.
Rent or buy: If you can find a copy, BUY BUY BUY.
This is a rare type of game. An educational game that will steal your soul. If you had the option to buy this or Oregon Trail 4, I would strongly recommend, no, I would order you to buy this.
