"An Excellent Strategy Game"

Global Power is a strategy game made by gmx media. You choose a country to play as and you then have to choose what objectives you have to complete. Every country that existed in 1997 (when the game is set) is available to play as so there are approximately 140 countries to choose between. Each of the countries is as accurate to their real world equivalents as possible as UN data from the time was used to create them.

Gameplay: 9
The games difficulty is determined by what country you play as, what objectives you choose and what length of time you give yourself to complete these objectives. For an easy game you could choose the objective to stay in power for a year and choose a democratic western country (e.g. the United States). For a very hard game you could try to conquer the world as a country with a relatively weak military (e.g. Haiti).
It should be noted that some things are totally impossible. You could set-up a
Game where you had to conquer the world in a year as Haiti but you’d never be able to do it.

Something that should be noted though is that AI does adapt to your playing style over time. If you continually use the same tactics in battle then it will eventually find ways to counter you.

The game is very easy to control. The menu system is very easy to use as is the battle system. The most impressive thing is that many of the battles take place in real world locations based on topographical maps of the areas you fighting in.

The games unit roster is also very impressive. Units can be designed from scratch using what technology you’ve researched. There is however a large number of real world units available at the start of the game, for example if you play as the U.S you can build such units as M1A1 tanks, F-16’s and Minuteman Nuclear warheads.

Graphics: 6
The graphics are not impressive. This isn’t a great problem though as the gameplay more than makes up for it.

Sound: 8
Sound effects are reasonably good. In the battle screen you can hear different sounds depending on what sort of unit is attacking (machine guns for infantry, explosions for tanks and artillery).

The game has no music included with it. Instead you can import whatever music you want yourself. Your music can be in either MP3 format or can be played direct from a CD (the game CD doesn’t need to be in the drive to play, only for installation).

Playtime/ Replayability: 10
How long it takes to complete the game depends on what objectives you set yourself. It can be finished in a few hours for a simple objective or it can take days to complete if you set yourself a hard objective.

As for replayability, the game is almost infinitely replayable. With the ability to choose between 140 countries and several different objectives there are many different ways to play the game. Also the AI’s ability to learn from your plying style means that it continually comes up with new ways to respond to you.

Conclusion:
An excellent strategy game. Graphically it’s be lacking however the point of the game is to mentally challenge you so this isn’t really a great loss. If you’re a fan of strategy games then you’ll love this one.
