Where can I find Redstone early on?

A major problem I keep having when starting a new game is I always get lost. So, before venturing out into the vast distance, I want to have a compass ready. However, to get a compass, I'll need Redstone.

Where should I begin to look? I know that every map is randomly generated, but even so, should I look for dungeons, or just start digging downwards?

In the map I'm on, whenever I find a dungeon, it's more like a tunnel that ends abruptly, with nothing inside. There are no dungeons with giant labyrinths filled with varieties of minerals nearby, so what should I do to get my first load of Redstone?

Just start digging. I always start by digging a stairway to the bottom. Then I can get some diamonds and red stone and start taking on the world.

Or you can mark a path w/ torches or Cobblestone, so if you get lost, you can find your way back, or make a giant pillar by your spawn point.
