Multiplexer?

In plain english I would really like to know what a multiplexer is?

A multiplexer has several inputs and outputs one of them based on what you tell it to do. E.g. Inputs A, B, C and D, output O, switches 1 and 2. Having both switches off might send A, one on and one off may send B or C, both on could send D.
