Create a world.
Find a tree. Left-click and hold to punch it and harvest wood.
Place wood in crafting area to create planks.
Place 4 planks in a 2x2 square in the crafting area to create a workbench.
Place 2 planks in a 2x1 rectangle in the crafting area to create sticks.
Place workbench in hotbar. Equip workbench and right-click to place it.
Right-click bench to open large crafting grid.
Place 2 sticks at the bottom for the handle and 3 planks above it for the head to create a wooden pickaxe.
Optional: Make a full set of wooden tools
Place 1 stick at the bottom for the handle and 2 planks above it for the blade to create a wooden sword.
Place 2 sticks at the bottom for the handle and 1 plank above it for the blade to create a wooden shovel.
Place 2 sticks at the bottom for the handle and 3 planks above and to the side for the blade to create a wooden axe.
Place 2 sticks at the bottom for the handle and 2 sticks above it for the blade to make a wooden hoe.
Equip the wooden pickaxe, left-click on the stone, and hold to mine cobblestone from stone. Mine at least 11 cobblestone.
Place 2 sticks at the bottom for the handle and 3 cobblestone at the top for the head to make a stone pickaxe.
Optional: All tools may be upgraded in this manner.
Place 8 cobblestone in a 3x3 ring around the crafting grid to create a furnace.
Place furnace in world.
Technically optional: Build a shelter.
Collect at least 18 wood and craft it into wooden planks. Build a 4x5 or larger square around your crafting bench and furnace. The space within this square should also include a 1x2 area for a bed, and enough space to easily access all three.
Extend the wall at least 3 blocks high, but leave at least 3 open spaces for light.
Actually optional: Build a bed.
Collect 3 wool. The simplest way at this point would be to find and kill 3 sheep.
If sheep are not available, wool can be crafted from string. String drops from spider mobs and cobweb blocks.
Place the 3 wool in a line above 3 wooden planks to create a bed.
Place the bed in your shelter. When night falls, you will be able to right-click it to reset your spawn point and advance time to dawn.
Moderately optional: Build a chest.
Throughout the game, you will be acquiring many, many items, most of which are useful enough to keep. However, your inventory space is limited, and if you die, you will drop it all in whatever random place you happen to be, and good luck finding it. Chests provide easy storage, and if built near a bed, can greatly aid in recovering from death.
Chests are built from planks and placed in the world.
Placing two chests next to each other combines their inventory.
Collect coal, or create charcoal. Coal is found in the world and can be mined with any pickaxe. Charcoal can be created by burning wood in a furnace. They are functionally identical, but do not stack with each other.
Coal and charcoal are the most effective fuels in a furnace. Each piece of coal or charcoal will "cook" exactly 8 items. They can also be crafted with sticks to create torches.
Torches are vital to your survival, as most hostile mobs will spawn only in darkness.
Search for iron. Iron is usually found underground, and can be mined with any non-wooden pickaxe.
Smelt the iron ore in your furnace to obtain iron ingots.
Iron has many, many uses.
- 1. Iron ingots can be used to further upgrade your stone tools. Iron pickaxes are necessary to advance, and other tools are more effective in iron than stone.
- 2. Iron can also be used to make shears. If you have been unable to obtain wool and make a bed, shears make the task much simpler. They can also be used to harvest leaves from trees.
- 3. Iron can also be used to make armor, which reduces damage from enemy attacks.
