How do you change the loot key so it's not the same as exchange weapon key?

This is usually key E, but it's the same key that you use to replace your current weapon with the one on the ground.
The problem is that it's not easy to get only the loot, you have to spend some seconds to make sure it's loot and not switch weapon by positioning yourself just right.
There's also a trick that's possible, you can press and hold E prior to positioning yourself to the message Loot body appearing and this causes instant loot (or if the message showed switch weapons it will replace the weapon with the one on the ground) but the good thing is with this that you don't have to wait until you see the message. This also works when looting leaves like Green Leaf, you just press and hold E and move into position and the looting starts immediately when the Press E message would show.
Now, I still need to make sure looting and replacing current weapon with the one on the ground use different keys, for example I'd put key F for looting and key E for replacing.

line 379:
<Binding input="kb:e" action="hold" signal="use"/>

you can change it to kb:k to use K key, but it's gonna be used for both loot and switch current weapon with the one on the ground (but in menu ->controls it will still show as E to interact, that's changeable in ui\defaultusercontrols.xml searching for OPTIONS_CONTROLS_PC_INTERACT and then it will still show "Hold E to interact" which is changeable if change interact in menu->controls or edit the file
c:\Users\user\AppData\Local\My Games\Far Cry 3\InputUserActionMap.xml properly which for K is something like this:

which is what happens if you edit interact key E and change it to K in menu->controls(in game) note that it's possible that if you edit it in menu it may not work in case of exit vehicle (which should remain still key E if you edited only line 379)

at least I got it to change from hold into press

now I don't have to use the hold prior to positioning on it trick just to save time

I searched for ways to upgrade the awful interface generally a year ago, and my conclusion is same as yours--the E key problem can't be fixed.

Thanks for the adjustments, 'Press' is an improvement over 'Hold'.

It's a shame such a great game is lumbered with such a generally terrible interface.
