Welcome to my guide for The Binding of Isaac! I hope you enjoy and can make
use of all the information given below. Now onward!

The Binding of Isaac is technically a Third Person Shooter, Real Time
Rogue-like. This might not mean much to you unless you've got a good knowledge
of genres. This isn't a real genre, but more of a hybrid genre. The third
person shooter element of the game is hard to miss - you see the character you
are controlling from above and you're 'shooting' a projectile (in this case
tears).

A rogue-like is more of an underground genre however, with almost no pure
rogue-likes being known in the mainstream. This is unfortunate however,
as there are some great rogue-likes out there (NetHack, Rogue, DoomRL and many
others). An example of an almost pure rogue-like that has mainstream popularity
is the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series. Rogue-like is derived from naming
games that are like the original Rogue-like, 'Rogue'. Not too hard to follow
right? This was basically a turn-based game where you're looking down upon a
map made up of ASCII characters where in general, '@' represents the player.
He would move through the randomly generated dungeons killing monsters,
finding items, levelling up and looking for the stairs to descend deeper
into the dungeon. These games are often rather similar but surprisingly fun
to play. Diablo is a good example of a game that takes rogue-like elements -
dungeon crawling through randomly generated dungeons, killing monsters,
levelling up and finding items - and uses them in a new way. The Binding of
Isaac is very similar too.

If you've never heard of the term 'Rogue-like' but you've played the original
'The Legend of Zelda' you'll quite likely draw quick comparisons to that game,
with good reason. It is also a rogue-like and The Binding of Isaac even takes
a few elements from the game (bombs, keys, the style of shops, hearts and
heart containers, the layout of a room or 'area', just to name a few). In a
nutshell, think of The Binding of Isaac as a morbid and warped The Legend of
Zelda with more up to date graphics, a different story and a larger variety
of items, enemies and bosses. Basically - The Legend of Zelda on crack.

I don't think anymore of an explanation is needed, but if you want it then
play the game.

I'm writing this guide for a variety of reasons: GameFAQ's Completion Project,
personal gain and most importantly because there is currently no guide for the
game! Something I find hard to believe. For that reason I'm eager to jump at
the chance as I rarely find a relatively popular game that I own that lacks
any guides. Without any guides I'm more motivated as I'm not always comparing
my information to that of other FAQs and means that I'm most definitely making
a contribution to gaming. But enough rambling on that. I tend to ramble a bit
actually. I hope it's not too much of an annoyance. Oh, and I hope that my lame
humour is lame enough that it keeps the guide feeling fairly light-hearted and
fun. The game has almost wanted me to add it though (not in a crazy
I'm-hearing-voices-in-my-head-like-Isaac's-Mom kind of way though).

Enjoy!

The Interface
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
The in-game interface explained:

The Map
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
The Map for each floor is found in the top-left corner of the screen. The
highlighted room is the one that you're currently in. Large icons in rooms
represent a particular room and small icons represent a particular item in
that room. Item icons are generally pretty self-explanatory.
The following icons represent the following rooms:

Crown = Treasure Room
Coin  = Shop
Skull = Boss Room
'?' = Secret Room
Sword = Challenge Room

These are the most basic, but there are others. For more info on rooms
see the Room Section of the guide.

Your Items
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
The numbers next to the pictures of the coin, key and bomb are the number of
each item that you have. These are found at the top of the screen in the
centre. For more info on these items, see the Pickups Subsection under the
Items Section.

Arrows
ŻŻŻŻŻŻ
To the right of the picture of the coin, key and bomb you'll find a box with
the word 'Arrow' above it and a blue Tear inside it. This is your current
weapon. As you traverse the dungeons, you'll eventually come across items
that will change the type of Tear or 'arrow' you use.

Recharge Item
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
To the right of the Arrow box, you'll find the Recharge Item box. This one is
headed with the word 'Space'. This will remain empty until you find a recharge
item at which point the item will be displayed in the box. To use the item
press the Spacebar button. The six small grey bars just to the right of this
box displays the item's 'charge'. When all six bars are highlighted, the item
(if you have one) can be used. This will cause all of the bars to become
unhighlighted and you must complete a set number of combat rooms (the number is
different for each item) for the bar to completely recharge. When it is
recharged, you can use the item again and the process repeats.

Health
ŻŻŻŻŻŻ
To the right of the Spacebar Item box is your health. The amount of red hearts
corresponds to the amount of health you have before you die. Black 'empty'
hearts, are empty red hearts. These can be refilled by finding hearts in-game.
So red hearts = actual Health and total hearts = maximum health. You can
increase your maximum health various ways in game. You will sometimes find blue
hearts called Soul Hearts. These act as armour or temporary health. As
soon as you take damage, the appropriate amount of blue hearts disappear. This
act as a kind of buffer.

Your Current Floor
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
In the bottom left-hand corner you will see a small black box. This shows what
level you are currently on.

General Gameplay
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
This gameplay is fairly unique compared to other games of today. Here I'll
explain a bit about how the game works. You spawn in a room on the level
Basement 1. Your objective is to find the Boss Room for each level, defeat the
boss, advance to the next level and repeat this until you've defeated the
final boss. This sounds like 90% of other games right? Well it's its actual
gameplay that sets it apart. To actually reach the Boss Room for each floor you
need to search it. Each level is randomly generated, so you're going to get a
different layout every time you play. While searching you're going to come
across rooms that contain enemies. To proceed from these rooms you need to
kill all of the enemies within. At the end of each battle, an item or chest
will spawn as a reward. These encounters form the bulk of the gameplay. There
are other rooms that are quite beneficial for you to enter as you items are
a massive part of playing the game. To finish a game without the use of items
would be almost impossible. For more in depth info on the type of rooms, see
the appropriate section.

Blood, Tears & Other Projectiles
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
The Binding of Isaac is based on a third person shooter comcept. For this
reason, you need something to shoot! Almost all of the projectiles in
this game appear to be bodily fluids. Who knows how they're so damaging,
but they tend to be extremely deadly all the same. Blood is generally
used by enemies and also Brother Bobby, one of the familiars you can find
within the game. At times other projectiles are used (sludge, chocolate
milk etc.) but in general it's blood and tears. Isaac himself begins the
game with tears streaming down his face and what better weapon to use that
those? Probably anything, but they seem to have some magic power or
something so who's complaining?

Basically, all of your own and your familiar's projectiles are harmless to
you, but damaging to all other enemies. Normal tears (and possibly other
projectiles??) can douse fires, but they don't really have any other
special use beyond that. As a general rule, dodge all blood! Even if it's
spurting from some monster's head, stay away. The size of the projectiles
also have an effect. Use common sense, if a projectile is twice the size
it's likely it'll do twice the damage. In general only a half-heart of
damage is dealt, but it can often be a full heart or sometimes even more.

Your own projectiles are reliant on most of your stats. Tears (the stat
with three arrows), damage (the stat with a sword) and range (the bow),
all affect your projectiles in the way you expect them to, but more on that
later. Just remember Quake III's most helpful motto and you'll be fine:
'Frag everything that isn't you'.

Projectile Momentum
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
This is a big part of the game. Before venturing out of your spawning room,
you might want to try this: move your character in one direction (it doesn't
matter which one) and then fire a projectile to the left or the right of the
direction that you're moving in. So if you are moving left, fire up or down.
You'll notice that the projectile will not only move in the direction you
shot it, but also in the direction you were moving at the time of shooting
your projectile. This is called momentum and has alot to do with Isaac
Newton's Laws of Motion (the first one especially) as well as vectors and
other physics topics and ideas. Obviously, you don't need to know the science
behind it, but you need to know how it'll affect projectiles in-game. The
faster you are moving at the time of shooting, the quicker the projectile
will move in that direction. This means that in-game you can shoot projectiles
in almost any direction. You don't need to be directly above, below or to the
left or right of an enemy to hit it. You could be just above and to the left
but if you move down and shoot to your right at the same time and judge it
correctly, you can hit the enemy (provided there aren't any obstacles or
anything like that in the way). The best thing to do with this is experiment
to work out how it works. It's a fairly simple but important idea and is
rather difficult to explain through text alone. So experiment and learn to
judge what speed you're going at when you fire a projectile and hence, the
projected path and the timing of when to shoot a projectile to hit the target.
This all comes with practise but should feel natural relatively natural because
you should have applied the idea to various everyday things that you have to
judge in real life.

Invincibility
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
After taking damage, your character turns invincible for a very short amount of
time. Although you aren't invincible for long, you can still make use of this
as you can get a

These are the enemies that are found throughout the rooms of the game and
make up the bulk of your combat. Unfortunately you cannot see the names of
any enemy in-game except for the end credits. For this reason a visual
description of each enemy is included so that you can match up entries to
the in-game enemies. This isn't ideal, but is the most elegant solution I
can think of for a text-only medium. I will try to keep the descriptions
relatively short and conscise so that it isn't too cumbersome to identify
the enemies.

The Mini-Bosses are randomly found throughout the dungeon. You never know
when you'll fall upon these rooms and when you do a very brief message of
'[Character Name] Vs. [Mini-Boss Name]' appears and then you're fighting!
The names may seem a bit odd but they are actually the Seven Deadly Sins.
They are generally fairly easy to fight but still shouldn't be underestimated.
Battles generally last around a half a minute to a minute. See below for
strategies. As names of each boss are given in-game, descriptions aren't needed
for you to identify the enemy but will be included simply for reference.

This happy chap begins the battle simply floating around the room bounces off
walls and obstacles. Once he takes enough damage, he splits in two. This
division is smaller and has less health. When one of these halves are destroyed
they instead split into two smaller parts that can be split once again into two
more parts. This means that it's possible to have 8 small Envys floating around
the room at once. Obviously this would be a disadvantage as you would have to
take more caution to dodge all of these parts so it's best to keep the amount
of Envys floating around on-screen to a minimum. This means destroyed one
always destroy the smallest on-screen division. If you stick to that rule, no
more than 4 will be floating around the room at any one time. They are all
fairly slow moving however, so it's relatively simple to dodge even four. You
shouldn't have too much trouble, just dodge and kill them. Remember - always
destroy the smallest head that's on the screen. If there are two of the same
size pick whichever's easiest.

This fat little beast can catch you unawares. As soon as you move into the room
he's already firing a beam at you so be ready. Gluttony is really just a Vis
(see general enemy section) with a head on top that can shoot out blood drops.
Just as Vis' are, Gluttony is most vulnerable when he's charging and shooting
his beam shot. This is when Gluttony's completely immobile and you can simply
run out of the range of the beam and get some easy damage on him. The beam can
only fire directly North, South, East or West so it's quite easy to dodge.
It is in fact better to lure him in by purposely walking into range of the beam
and get him to charge it up while you run back out of range and get some damage
on him than trying to dodge and allowing him to shoot out 8 drops of blood in
all directions, but even that's a fairly easy attack to dodge, but more
difficult that the beam. So lure him into immobilising himself to use his beam
and kill him that way.

Greed is a unique mini-boss as it's almost exlusively found as a replacement to
shops or secret rooms. It's meant to be a 'punishment' for your greediness by
trying to get money/buy more items.

Greed has two attacks. It can shoot three projectiles in a single cardinal
direction which means that if you're diagonally positioned relative to Greed,
it cannot damage you. Greed's other attack is the spawning of two Hoppers to
Greed's left and right sides. These should be dealt with immediately otherwise
they have a small chance of catching you out with their random movement and
damaging you.

Greed's moves horizontally only, which makes the battle much, much easier for
you. All you have to do is move left and right so that you're diagonally
positioned in relation to him so that his projectile shot cannot damage you and
deal with Hoppers as they spawn. Other than that just attack Greed and the
battle will be over with quickly. Seriously, if you take *any* damage in this
battle I'd be surprised. It's the easiset of all mini-bosses.

On death, Greed drops a number of coins (mainly pennies, but sometimes
nickles). Additionally, if you take damage from Greed's projectiles, you will
drop three pennies, which can be recollected (Thanks to Tyguy for this
information).

A hot pink zombie. This guy has the same AI as a Gaper does and is slightly
quicker than a Dormant Gaper after it's awoken. So it's constantly taking the
most direct toward the player. It tends to pick up speed quickly when moving in
a straight line, so turn corners often to slow it down. Just keep firing at it
as it chases you and it'll die pretty quickly. An very simply mini-boss battle.

This attractive guy has two attacks at his disposal: shooting out an
pulse wave shot at its diagonals and its more difficult attack, summoning four
troll bombs at random points in the room. The pulse wave attack is simple to
deal with, just don't walk into its range. The troll bombs are more difficult
though. Run away and take into account troll bomb explosions pushing other
troll bombs into your path, try to find spots that you know no troll bombs will
be pushed towards. Pride will also sometimes summon a second set of 4 troll
bombs before the first set has fully exploded. This can make things frantic at
times, but just keep calm and you should be able to dodge them unless you get
poor luck. Take note that the Pride is immune to troll bomb explosions. One of
the more difficult mini-bosses but still fairly easy, it can just be difficult
to win without taking any damage at all.

Sloth is one sick dude (lame jokes FTW!). He has the appearance of a green
globin, but combines Chub's ability to spawn Chargers (see general enemies
section) with Scolex's area damage attack. The Chargers are relatively
simple to deal with. Stay out of their line of sight (due North, South, East
and West) so they don't charge at you. Don't worry about killing them unless
you have to (ie. you're going to take damage if you don't), because Sloth'll
just spawn another one, so you're not gaining anything. Instead focus your
shots on Sloth himself and use his own area damage attack to destroy the
Chargers. This attacks has a fairly large damage area, but it's lobbed into
the air so you have ample time to move out of range before it explodes on
impact with the ground. You have to be very careful with this attack though, it
does a full heart of damage. That can make a big difference, so treat the shot
with the respect it deserves. Just don't forget about the Chargers when you're
dodging it! One of the more difficult and unforgiving mini-bosses, he'll keep
you engaged.

There's definitely no reference made to Bomberman with this boss. It's not like
their attacks, room layout or appearance are similar, of course not.

Either way, this is probably the most entertaining mini-boss battle. For me
personally at least. What Bomberm- er... Wrath does, is move around the screen
randomly and uses troll bombs in one of two ways. He either drops the bomb at
his feet and runs away (his own bombs hurt him, just like Bomberman's own bombs
hurt him) or flings one at you. Remember that you can push bombs around. This
means that if he flings a bomb at you, fling it back. This will require you
building up a bit of speed first, so move back a bit, get a running start and
push the bombs back. This kind of battle strategy is rather unique to the game
and makes for one of the funnest battles overall. Don't be afraid of the bombs,
but still be quick and always make sure you're well away from the bombs before
they explode. When he isn't flinging bombs at you that you can fling back,
making sure you're firing tears at him as much as you can.

An important and interesting note. These Troll Bombs are unique, they are
affected by tear knockback. No other Troll Bombs act in this way. It means
that when you're trying to push a bomb back at Wrath, not only can you push it
towards him, but you can also shoot projectiles at it to give it a large push
towards Wrath. Use this special mechanic to aid you in defeating him.

Honestly the guy seems more interested in destroying the breakable rocks in
this room than actually fighting you, in true Bomberman fashion!

These are your main bosses! You must defeat one of these bosses to progress

______________________________________________|ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
ŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ

Blastocyst is a boss found in The Womb 1.

Blastocyst is one of the more time-consuming and frantic boss battles. At the
start of the battle, there is only one large Blastocyst. It has the following
attacks:

- A small hop. Very simply to dodge and as all Blastocyst's movement is random,
the hop will rarely be straight towards you.
- A slightly larger hop. Blastocyst sprays alot of blood in a random direction
upon landing, so stay away and be ready to dodge. It can be easy to confuse the
first and second attacks, but there are subtle differences.
- A large hop. When Blastocyst lands after the large hop, he shoots eight small
drops of blood out in all directions. He doesn't jump at you when he does his
large jump, unlike most bosses.

The first stage is fairly simple. Just stay as far away as you can and keep
firing at it. You should have a fairly high speed stat considering that you're
in The Womb 1 floor, so it should be pretty easy to dodge the attacks. The
random sprays of blood generally leave fairly large gaps so you can dodge it
pretty easily and the fact that all of Blastocyst's movement is random and he
tends to stay in the same place and not move about much which means that you'll
rarely have to run away from him.

After Blastocyst takes enough damage, it splits into two smaller ones. These
have different attacks to the large one, but movement is still slow and
random, so you won't have too much trouble but you now have to keep track of
two enemies. Their attacks are as follows:

- A small hop. As the name implies. Not very difficult to dodge, just make sure
they don't sneak up on you.
- A medium hop. Upon landing this hop, they shoot out four large drops of blood
either diagonally or N, S, E and W. They alternate between the two shots at
random.

This gets a little more difficult. Make sure you're always shooting at them.
You won't need to move much except to dodge, which is the main difficulty in
this battle. Not knowing which shot they'll use means you should be ready for
both. Keep attentive here.

Once these guys have been damaged enough, they both split again! You'll now
have four even smaller Blastocysts running around. They have the following
attacks:

- A small hop. Again, it works the same way as the last two stages, they tend
to move around a bit more now though,
- Shoots four large drops N, S, E and W. Each Blastocyst shakes before he uses
this move.

You're going to have to do some dodging here. Having four that are all fairly
mobile can get a bit hectic. Their blood shot can be rather dangerous now, but
you have the shake as a helpful forewarning. Once the Blastocysts are damaged
enough, their gelatinous shield breaks and the Blastocysts inside simply hop
around randomly and can only cause touch damage. Only a few more shots will
completely kill one. At this point just
focus on killing one at a time.

Keep patient with this battle. It's not too difficult, just make sure you
don't drop your guard or you'll find yourself caught out.

ŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ

Chub is a boss found in the Caves,

A Charger on steroids, Chub is still a relatively easy enemy. He has two
attacks. He can either spawn a Charger or charge himself. The battle starts
with Chub and 3 Chargers already spawned. The best strategy is to do as much
damage to Chub as possible. Don't worry about the Chargers unless you are going
about to take damage from them, in which case kill them. Their charges are
usually easy to dodge due to their small size and average speed and it's better
if you can so that you can focus on getting Chub good and dead. If Chub charges
just dodge his as you would a normal Charger. Take note that his charges will
cause a full heart of damage. Make sure you're away from the wall that Chub is
charging towards when you dodge otherwise you may be in line of sight when he
finishes his charge and charge against straight away which can catch you off
guard. Same goes for Chargers. They're not quite as large but can still do some
damage.

You can also make good use of bombs. If one is placed in Chub's path as he's
charging, he will swallow it, stunning him and taking off a large portion of
damage.

The battle is relatively easy, stay aware and you'll be fine. Try and stay out
of the way of Chargers though, so that there's no need to dodge their charges.

The Duke of Flies is a boss found in the Basement.

The Duke of Flies seems to be a fairly chill boss. He randomly floats around on
screen coughing up flies. These flies are either the hostile red-bodied flies
or a larger version of them, only encountered when facing the Duke of Flies.

The Duke of Flies has three moves available, none of which that are direct
attacks against the player.

- Spawns 3 red-bodied flies.
- Spawns 1 large red-bodied fly.
- A push move that stops the red-bodied flies from circling the Duke and
causes them to attack the player.

The large red-bodied flies never circle the Duke, they attack as soon as they
are spawned. These flies do one full heart of damage to the player.

When each move is used depends on the number of flies circling the Duke of
Flies. The mechanics of this are listed below:

If 6 small flies circle Duke, push them away
If 5 small flies circle Duke, push them away or shoot out 1 large fly
If 4 small flies circle Duke, shoot out 1 large fly
If 3 small flies circle Duke, shoot out 3 small flies
If 2 small flies circle Duke, shoot out 3 small flies
If 1 small fly circles Duke, shoot out 3 small flies
If 0 small flies circle Duke, shoot out 3 small flies

Therefore this mechanic can be manipulated to make the Duke act the way you
want. In general though, just keep attacking the Duke and don't pay too much
mind to the except when they are trying to attack. When that happens always
deal with them straight away but otherwise focus on killing the Duke.

When the Duke 'pushes' the flies away and turns them hostile towards you,
they will all be spread out. It is best to move back as far away as possible
so that the flies come back into a smaller area as they come to attack. Make
sure there is no terrain obstructing your line of sight to the flies when
they come and attack as this will only work to the enemy's advantage.

This battle is fairly simple, as long as you keep all fire on the Duke except
for when the flies are swarming towards you, you should defeat him relatively
quickly and take no damage unless you've made a careless mistake.

ŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ

Fistula is a boss in the Caves.

The Fistula boss is rather similar to the Mini-Boss Envy, except that the
objects that you have to dodge are bigger, have more health, divide
differently and when they're completely destroyed, spawn a Charger that you
have to deal with. The same rule applies though - always destroy the smallest
divions that are on screen at any one time. If there are two of the same size,
pick whichever's easiest and if a Charger is on screen, always kill him before
destroying another part of Fistula. This limits the number of objects that you
will have to keep track of at a time to five, down from the maximum of a
possible eight. Much easier right?

The divisions work like this. Fistula starts as one large ball of.. whatever it
actually is. It floats around the room, bouncing off of obstacles and walls.
After sustaining enough damage, it breaks up into four parts. These parts act
as individual entities and have the same AI as the original ball, bouncing off
of walls, rocks and each other. They do move quicker than the original ball
though, so be careful. Each of these divions, once taking enough damage, split
in half. These divisions have the same AI and move even faster. When these
divisions are destroyed, they spawn a Charger which should be dealth with
straight away if possible.

Although it is safer to stay in one spot in the room and only move when needed,
you need to chase after the divion you've chosen and make sure it's killed. Try
and restrict yourself to running around the edges as you only have to watch out
for divisions on 180 degrees of the room instead of 360 degrees.

The path of the divisions can be subtly affected by projectiles, pushing them
in a slightly altered direction if hit. Fistula isn't actually a flying boss
either, although it may look like it. He cannot go over rocks, pits or anything
of the like.

This battle can get frantic, but if done correctly will have no more than five
divisions on-screen at any point. Approach the battle methodically and be
cautious.

Gemini is a boss found in the Basement.

Gemini is in truth two seperate enemies, the enemy on the ground with the AI
of a Gaper and the fetus-like enemy that gets pulled around by him and shoots
you when it has line of sight. The Gaper-like ground monster runs towards you
via the most direct path. He moves slowly at first, but bursts out running
when you're close enough. As long as there's terrain around to cover you, the
fetus part of Gemini won't be much of a problem as it'll rarely have line of
sight to you. If there isn't terrain, the battle may be more of a problem, but
still shouldn't be too difficult, just stay attentive in regards to the
projectiles. The best idea is to stay to the edges of the room and just lead
Gemini around, firing projectiles when you have line of sight on the straight.

The best strategy is to destroy one part of the boss first. This depends on
which is more difficult. In general, the Gaper part should be dealt with
first unless you have real trouble with the fetus.

If the fetus is killed first, the Gaper part will act as normal but no longer
has to pull around the other half so moves much quicker. If the Gaper part is
killed first, the fetus turns red and chases you around the screen, taking
the most direct route to you and flying over terrain. It moves fairly slow
though and no longer shoots projectiles and is overall less difficult. The
Gaper part is easy too, but more likely to catch you out and deal damage. The
fetus flies, so it can go over terrain, so be prepared for that.

Overall, this battle is very simple. Run away from the enemy and dodge the
odd projectile that comes your way. In my opinion, the easiest of all boss
battles. It is best

Gurdy is a boss in the Caves.

Gurdy is a stationary of blood and guts. His attacks are as follows:

- Spawns boils. These grow if left unattacked. When they're fully grown they
shoot sprays of blood out at the player. To destroy these, you need to keep
hitting them until they shrink down and eventually disappear. This means that
one shot will stop them firing blood (they need to be fully grown) but if they
aren't completely destroyed they will just grow until full-sized again.

- Shoots five drops of blood at your from his mouth. He directs this in
whatever direction you're in by moving his head to different places in the
mound.

- Spawns red-bodied flies behind his body. These flies are 'stunned' for a few
seconds before they commence their attack on you. Fairly easy to deal with.
He sometimes spawns Pooters too. These are more dangerous and can shoot blood
so deal with them straight away.

At the start of the battle, Gurdy already has two boils spawned. Kill them
before they're fully grown. The battle is fairly simple as Gurdy is immobile.
Move around alot. Try and destroy boils before they are fully grown. If you
can't, simply stay out of range (eg. if they're on the right side of Gurdy,
move to his left and attack from there) and just kill the ones that spawn in a
place that they can attack you from. Deal with flies straight away as they're
pretty weak and don't get spawned too often. Make sure you check whether
red-bodied flies or Pooters are spawned though. If it's a Pooter, be careful
and make sure it's dealt with straight away. At all other times make sure
you're attacking Gurdy himself. When he tries to shoot blood at you, dodge and
then start attacking again. It's all pretty simple and obvious.

ŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ

Larry Jr. is a boss in the Basement.

Larry Jr. is actually two bosses. Two segmented worms that we can assume have
split and were originally one larger boss. There is also no 'Larry Sr.'
in-game. It's probably more likely to be a boss that was originally scratched
or a reference to Larry Jr. before it split.

These attractive little guys move around the map randomly. They're quite fast
and pick up speed randomly, this speed up appears to be synchronised between
the two worms. The size of the worms are not always equal either, but the total
amount of segments always stays the same. Damaging a particular segment enough
(including the head) destroys it. If the head is destroyed, the next segment
becomes the head. If a segment in the middle is destroyed, the two segments to
either side connect or sometimes split and form two smaller worms.

The worms sometimes 'drop' poo behind them. If they end up running into this
poo later on, it is popped and the worm moves off in a different direction.
When poo is popped (by you or Larry Jr.) it occasionally drops health or soul
hearts. The worms can even double back on themselves when changing directions.

When fighting these guys, generally stay as far away from them while still
staying close enough to hit them with you tears. You need to be patient and
expect them to move away before your tears hit them quite often. Just don't
get to close and run away if they come near you. If you're far enough away you
won't be surprised and caught off guard. Also make that the worms don't end up
cornering you. Always make sure you have an escape route. Poo can be used as a
good shield too. Hide near it to protect you from one of the worms as you fire
at the other. If the worm you aren't attacking runs into it, it will pop it but
will change directions, keeping you safe. Focus on killing one at a time so
that you have to deal with two at once for as short a time as possible.

Patience and caution are key here. If you stay caution, you stay alive and
healthy. A room empty of terrain makes this battle much easier as it's more
difficult to get cornered like you often can when the room is terrain heavy.

Loki is a boss found in The Depths 1.

This battle is quite hard. Loki has four different moves it uses. You can tell
which move it's about to use by the face it makes. They are as follows:

- All four hands in mouth, look of contentment. Loki will teleport to a random
spot in the room.
- Two hands in mouth, look of contentment. Loki will shoot four projectiles
in the four cardinal directions, immediately followed by shooting four
projectiles at each diagonal, followed by a second shot of four projectiles in
the four cardinal directions.
- Look of happiness. Loki will spawn a Boom Fly. The Boom Fly is usually black
but a red one will spawn fairly regularly.
- Look of surprise. Shoots 8 projectiles in all directions.

Additionally, a Pokey randomly moves around the room. Pokies cannot be
destroyed, so you're going to have to dodge this for the entirety of the
battle.

Loki has a huge amount of health, so normal attacks are impractical in this
boss battle. What you want to do is use the Boom Flies against Loki. He's not
immune to their blast damage so wait until they're near him and blow them up.
A few of these and Loki's done.

You really need to be careful though. The Pokey will quite often blow up the
Boom Flies, so you really want to be far from the Pokey at all times, otherwise
you're going to take a fair amount of damage. Just dodging the Boom Flies
themselves is difficult enough. You should stay to the edges of the room and
try and keep as many of the enemies on one side as possible so that you can
follow the movements of all the enemies much more easily.

Loki's attacks themselves aren't very deadly. As long as you stay far enough
away you'll be fine. The worst part is the oversaturation of Boom Flies that
tends to happen. They can set off chain reactions. One can blow up another,
which blows up another, which blows up another, which damages you. You really
need to be careful and stop this from happening, which means focussing alot of
your fire on the Boom Flies. The red Boom Flies aren't quite so bad as they
don't explode when killed, but instead shoot out projectiles. Be ready for
those.

You want to get this battle over with quickly. If you don't you're going to
start taking alot of damage. Use Boom Flies as the weapons to kill Loki but be
careful not to get damaged by the explosions yourself.

Mom is the boss found in The Depths 2. She is encountered every time.

Okay, this battle is frantic. There are numerous attacks that Mom has and she
tends to employ at least two at a time. They're listed below.

- The foot stomp. Or Curb Stomp as I prefer to call it (I be ghetto you know).
Make sure you're always watching out for shadows around the room and especially
over the top of the character. This signals that Mom is about to 'put her foot
down' (lame enough pun?) so move away quickly! A grunt signals that she is
about to attack with her foot. Often this can be too late a warning though so
be ready.
- The slap. This happens when you get to close to an open door sometimes. A
hand suddenly slips out and damages you. The best way to avoid this attack is
by stopping it from ever happening, so stay away from the doors!
- The last one is Mom spawning monsters from open doors. Whenever a piece of
flesh (or possibly something else; I try not to dwell on it) appears in a
doorway, enemies are going to be spawned out of it. The enemies are random and
can be absolutely anything which makes the battle a bit more interesting and
adds a small element of chance.

There are also a number of ways to hurt Mom. They are listed below, but the
general rule it 'If it's flesh, ATTACK IT.'

- The foot. Probably one of the easiest because it's immobile for a short time
after a stomp making it an easy target.
- The eye. The eye doesn't seem to have any real use (that I know of) but is a
relatively easy way to damage Mom. Whenever Mom calls out 'Isaaaaaaaac' it's
because the eye has a appeared.
- The hand. As it has a fairly short reach you can just move out of range and
attack it.
- The flesh (or whatever it is). Completely harmless to you, but is quite often
blocked by the enemies that it just spawned so can be a bit of a pain to hit.
If you're trying to attack enemies though, bear in mind that if you miss an
enemy that you may be able to hit this and damage Mom.

Basically, Mom takes 3 of the above attacks and uses them at random. Keep at it
and always be alert for Mom's foot, that's the most likely to catch you out.

[Note: I use 'Moms Heart' as the name instead of 'Mom's Heart', the proper
grammatically correct title. This is because it's always called 'Moms Heart'
in-game. If you have a problem, take it up with Edmund].

Moms Heart is the boss found in The Womb 2. She is encountered every time.

This battle is simple. But its length can make it a problem.

Basically, the only way to damage Moms Heart is attacking it when it appears.
It appears only to spawn two random enemies of the same type. It then stays
on-screen and vulnerable for a few more seconds before it disappears. You must
then kill the spawned enemies. When they're killed, Moms Heart reappears and
spawns two or 4 more enemies, depending on what it is. This repeats until it's
lost enough health. The best strategy to kill Moms Heart is ignore the enemies
and focus on Moms Heart until it disappears. The only exception is when two
Eyes are spawned. These should be dealt with straight away otherwise you're
going to take alot of damage. When fighting these guys, keep moving all the
time and focus all your attention on one at a time.

Once Moms Heart has lost about three quarters of its health, it will stay on
screen permanently, spawning enemies whenever you kill the previous one, but
also shooting out large drops of blood in random directions. These are pretty
easy to dodge, generally shooting in some harmless direction. If an easy enemy
has spawned, it may be a good idea to leave one alive, so that a more difficult
enemy won't be spawned and you can simply focus on killing the heart and simply
dodge the enemy. A very straightforward battle and not TOO difficult.

By the way, it's assumed that after having went through eight floors, you're
going to have good items, arrows and stats. This strategy assumes you do. If
you don't you may find it much more difficult to win. The first time I faced
Moms Heart I won, but I had insane stats (10 Health, Ouija Board, Maxed
Range and Damage, two cubes of meat, Forever Alone, Yum Heart and around 5
points for both Speed and Tears.)

Monstro is a boss found in the Basement.

Monstro's attacks are as follows:

- a small hop. Monstro hops towards you. Very easy to dodge, just make sure you
aren't too close to him at any point and you'll be fine.
- a blood spray. Monstro will sometimes spray a mouthful of blood in your
direction. The blood has a fairly wide arc so make sure you're far enough away
so that you have enough time to dodge the blood. You can tell he's about to use
this move as there is a notable pause.
- a large jump that causes a random blood spray in all directions. This is
probably the most annoying of the attacks. Monstro flies off screen and lands
at the point you were at when he started his jump. When he lands a large amount
of bloods sprays in all directions, but not evenly. As soon as he begins
jumping, run as far away as possible and get ready to dodge the blood. His
current position can always be seen by the position of his shadow. If you are
far enough away, only a small portion of the blood will reach you as each drop
has a different range to th others. Only a small amount will have a large range
and so you should be able to dodge it fairly easily.

The small hop is used randomly, the blood spray is only used when you're in
range and the large jump can be used at any time. Attack him at every chance
you get, especially when he is hopping towards you as that's when he's least
dangrous. None of the attacks are very difficult. Constantly dodging large
amounts of blood can get tiresome though. Just be patient.

Monstro II is a boss found in The Depths 1.

Monstro II is the upgraded version of Monstro. He's honestly only a little more
difficult, but he looks cooler. :3 All of his attacks are upgraded. They are as
follows:

- The generic small hop. Exactly the same as the original Monstro's small hop.
Keep moving and you'll be fine.

- Can shoot a beam, similar to Vis' beam. This is an upgrade from Monstro's
blood spray. The beam can only shoot directly left or right and he will only
use it if you are in range. Before using it, Monstro II will pause with his
mouth gaping open, you can use this to notify when he's about to use it. He's
immobile while using it. Make sure you're always aware of your position in
relation to Monstro II and make sure you're not in range of this attack unless
you want to be.

- Monstro's large jump that sprayed blood randomly in all directions upon
landing has been upgrade. It now alternates between the two following attacks.
The first is a large jump that will spray eight large drops of blood that shoot
in all directions when Monstro II lands. The second large jump will spawn four
Suckers (see general enemy section for details) when he lands. These should be
dealt with straight away to avoid having to follow multiple enemies at once. On
death they shoot out small drops of blood N, S, E and W so be prepared to
dodge. The first attack is fairly simple, but be careful not to be caught
unawares. For both jumps, they function in the same way as the original
Monstro's. He will land at the point you were standing in at when he commences
jumping.

Overall, as long as you keep moving, you should dodge all of his attacks. Make
sure you don't double back on yourself after moving through his beam range
otherwise you may find yourself walking straight into it. The Suckers can be a
pain if left undealt with, so make sure they're taken out as soon as possible
after being spawned. You may also want to lure Monstro II into continually
using his beam so you don't have to worry about projectile fire from his jump
attacks. As soon as you know he's about to use his beam run back out of range
and pepper him with fire. After he's finished firing you can move back in and
repeat, just be careful not to get hit. Damage him as much as possible and as
quickly as possible, just keep aware, especially with his beam attack (you may
not notice the fairly subtle pause before it's too late). You're going to do
alot of dodging in this, so keep moving around all the time. Monstro II is one
of the more demanding bosses you'll face so be prepared.

Peep is a boss found in the Caves.

Peep is a giant slug that makes a big yellow-coloured mess. He has the
following attacks:

- he can fire 12 drops of urine in all directions. Usually bosses only shoot
eight projectiles at once. Having an extra four means that the gap between
each projectile is MUCH smaller and can be very difficult to dodge. Try and
stay as far away from this guy as you can so that the projectiles have time
to spread out before you dodge them. If the room you're battling in has terrain
make good use of it by hiding behind it whenever he fires.

- Takes a 'number one' all over the floor. Disgusting and toxic, if you touch
it you take damage. It spreads all around Peep, so make sure you're a safe
distance away. When you have to run away from one of his jumps (see his last
attack) and he's urinated on the floor, make sure you don't run into it in
your desperation to get away.

- Jumps into the air and lands where the character was at the beginning of his
jump shooting 12 projectiles upon landing. The jump itself is fairly simple
to combat. Make sure you move away as quickly as possible though, so that
you've put some distance between you and Peep before he lands and you have to
dodge the projectiles. Terrain is an amazing help in this battle and basically
completely nullifies this attack if you hide behind it. Peep cannot jump over
terrain so he will instead simply jump to somewhere close to his original spot,
spraying projectiles that will be harmless to you because you're hidden behind
terrain. This leaves you free from danger.

Basically attack him as much as you can and be prepared to dodge his projectile
shots. A fairly simple battle with not alot to think about until he's been
damaged a bit. Once he has lost approximately a third of his health, he loses
an eye. This eye floats over terrain and rebounds off walls. Keep battling as
normal, but keep track of the eye, if it touches you, you take damage. After he
loses approximately two thirds of his health, he loses his second eye. This one
acts in the exact same way as the first eye but now you have to objects that
are floating around the room as well as Peep. Make sure you're always aware of
the eyes and where they're moving to. Stay away but otherwise keep attacking
Peep as much as possible. Things can get frantic when he shoots out the
projectiles and you have to dodge the eyes at the same time so be ready. But
again, terrain is your best friend in this battle.

This battle can be a pain, especially without terrain to hide behind. It's all
about reflexes and caution. If you stay well away from Peep and are ready to
dodge, you'll be fine. Don't forget about those eyes though, they can force you
to move into harm's way at times.

Scolex is a boss found in The Womb 1.

This guy's a big red worm. The fact that it's found in Isaac's Mom's womb makes
you question what type of worm it is.

Scolex is always under 'ground' except for when attacking. The only vulnerable
part of him is his tail (the flashing part). This means that you can only
damage during two of the three attacks. You'll know he has taken damage when
his whole body flashes red. Because it's much harder to land a shot on Scolex,
he has much lower health than other bosses to compensate. The attacks are
explained below:

- it leaps out from the ground at a random location in the room and lands at
the point you were standing at when it originally leapt out. Once it lands
it burrows back under ground. This is the least dangerous of the attacks, as
long as you keep moving you won't get hurt by this attack. It's also a good
time to deal the most damage to Scolex, but you need to aim at his tail.

- He appears head first and fires a 3 area-damage projectiles, the same ones
that are employed by Sloth. They are lobbed into the air and explode on impact
with the ground. After firing these, Scolex disappears. As there are three
projectiles, the overall damage area is going to be greater, so make sure
you're well away from this attack before it hits the ground. As you can't see
his tail during these attacks you have no way of damaging him so you just need
to focus on dodging this attack.

- He appears tail first and sprays a large amount out blood in your direction.
This blood also has a wide arc so be careful. As soon as Scolex pops up
tail first, move away and get ready to dodge. This attack won't cause too much
trouble, nor will the others. This is the best time to deal damage as he's
stationary so easy to hit.

Overall just react to each attack as need be, attacking whenever he appears.
Keep moving around the whole battle and you'll easily dodge all the attacks
This really isn't a hard battle and considering it's a boss in the Womb, it's
way too easy. They should have given him as much health as the other bosses
to increase the difficulty.

Famine is a boss in the Basement.

Famine's basically a dead guy riding a flying fake horse. All makes sense. So,
his main attack is signalled by a kind of scream followed by Famine charging at
you. This charge causes him to fly off screen, making him reappear immediately
at the same point on the other side of the screen. His second attack is the
spawning of one Pooter (see details in general enemies section). He can spawn
in quick succession, but won't spawn any more when there are three already
on-screen. The best idea is to stay above or below Famine. If you do this he
cannot use his charge attack as it only works horizontally.

There's really no reason to attack the Pooters. Only a second or two after
killing one, Famine will spawn another. Instead try and position yourself
as far away from the Pooters as possible (or at least out of range), but within
range of Famine. Then just focus all your projectiles on him. If the Pooters
come into range and Famine is toward the top or bottom of the room, you can
kill the Pooters so they respawn near him and you can simply move to the other
side of the room and you'll be out of range of the Pooter's projectiles. Your
range should still be able to hit Famine so just try and deal as much damage to
him as you can at that time. You can also use Famine's charge attack against the
Pooters. If he hits them whilst charging, they die.

Once Famine has taken sufficient damage, his mount and body will be destroyed.
He can no longer spawn Pooters or charge, but can only shoot 3 drops of blood
out of his mouth at a time and move at a fairly slow pace. If there are Pooters
still alive, kill them now. Then just dodge his projectiles and kill him. You
can basically stay stationary and shoot him and just before he shoots starting
moving around Famine to dodge the shots.

On death Famine drops the item 'Cube of Meat'. See the item section for
details on this.

                Pestilence [08.03] |________________________________

ŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ

Pestilence is a boss in the Caves.

Pestilence has two stages. During his first stage he has his head and rides
upon an undead steed. His primary attack is to throw area damage projectiles
that are lobbed into the air and explode on the ground upon impact. These
leave behind toxic liquid on the ground which can't be touched without taking
damage. After a while this disppears, but you need to dodge this until then.
This is his most common attack.

Pestilence's secondary attack is to spawn two Chargers, two Spities or a
Charger and a Spity. Wherever he moves, he also leaves /a trail of toxic liquid
behind that works in the same way that the toxic liquid from the projectile
that he fires works. His movements can be fairly fast and erratic at times.

Pestilence is much more powerful during his first stage. The best thing to do
is keep your distance as much as possible, make sure that you have at least two
ways of escaping, just in case one gets cut off and dealing with the Spities
and Chargers that spawn, as they don't respawn rapidly. If you're far enough
away, his projectiles won't be able to hit you, but dodge to the side if you're
close enough to be hit.

Try and defeat the spawned enemies first so that you only have to focus on the
boss and his attacks. You should be defeating them much quicker than Pestilence
can spawn them, so you'll still be able to damage Pestilence a lot too. Make
sure that he doesn't cut off your escape route with his trail of toxic liquid.
If he suddenly moves too close to you, run as far away as possible, around him
if you must. It's a fairly straightforward fight that's more reliant on keeping
track of everything that's happening and keeping the number of spawned enemies
in check.

Pestilence turns into his second stage after taking enough damage. When he does
this, the battle becomes much easier. His primary attack is to spawn red-bodied
flies which can be easily dealt with, and his secondary and less used attack is
to fire an area damage projectile identical to the one in the first stage. His
moves are slower and less erratic and he still leaves a trail of toxic liquid
behind him.

All that needs to be done here is to stay out of range of the projectiles and
deal with the red-bodied flies as soon as they appear. You should be able to
defeat them quicker than Pestilence can spawn them, so you should have time to
focus a fair portion of your shots on the boss himself.

ŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ

War is a boss in The Depths I.

Has an upgraded charge compared to Famine. He charges horizontally off screen
charging back on 3 times before stopping. He charges the bottom, middle and
top areas of the room once each before stopping. The order of the charges is
random and the charge is much quicker than Famine's was. It's very dangerous
and hard to dodge. It's a very good idea that you stay above or beneath him
so he doesn't make use of the attack as you must be directly left or right of
War for him to charge. His other attack is a burst of eight drops of blood in
all direction that alot of bosses tend to have. It tends to happen with less
warning than other enemies though so stay attentive.

Once War has sustained sufficient damage, he loses his mount and chases you in
a similar way to Lust or a Dormant Mr. Maw after he's been awakened except that
he's even faster. Just keep running away and shooting projectiles to damage and
also slow him a bit. After taking a few shots, War pauses for a second or so.
This is extremely helpful to put a bit of distance between you and your enemy.

Overall, War is a very quick and spontaneous boss that can catch you off guard
if you're not careful. As long as you stay focused, you should be able to beat
him without too much trouble. Once he's off his mount he's much easier, but
still a pain. Keep at it and you'll win.

ŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻ

This boss can be found anywhere except The Depths 2 and The Womb 2, it can be
encountered multiple times in a playthrough, but even single encounters are
rare.

This boss is nasty! You have to battle both the head and a body mounted on a
horse. They both have vastly different attacks, but they're both very
dangerous, so together, these make up one of the most difficult bosses in the
game. The head has the following attacks:

- Can charge. Doesn't require you to be directly left or right of the boss to
trigger the charge, although this makes it more likely. The head hurtles off
screen and then appears on the other side of the screen at a random spot,
meaning you have to be watching for where it appears. Can be very sudden and
can catch you out easily. This happens a number of times before the head
finally stops.

- If you are close by, the head can shoot out 3 drops of blood at you. Not
difficult if it were on its own, but when you have to deal with the body at the
same time, it can be very difficult and you can be caught out quickly.

The body has the following attack:

- It lobs an area damage projectile in your direction. You have a fair bit of
time between the time the body fires the projectile and when it hits the
ground. Upon explosion, the projectiles leave behind toxic blood that will
damage you if stepped upon. This disappears after awhile, but up to 3 seperate
lots of this toxic blood can be present in the room at one point, severely
crippling movement.

The head moves very little, except when charging, while the body tends to move
slowly towards the player.

What makes this battle so hard is that there are two enemies that you must keep
track of. Normally you could keep them both on one side, making the battle more
maneagble as you only have to keep your eye on one side of the battlefield, but
because the head's charges put it in a random spot, you will often find
yourself between the two enemies, which means almost certain damage. You also
have to stay a safe distance away from the body at all times otherwise you're
going to take damage from the area projectiles The toxic blood it leaves behind
is horrible, it may cut off what would've been your only way to escape from the
enemies and you might find more damage coming your way. The three projectiles
the head shoots can catch you off guard too, so try and stay as far away from
both enemies, but more so the body as it's more likely to damage you (the head
seems to favour charging more than shooting projectiles so you may get away
with standing nearby when you have to).

The best strategy is to try as best you can to keep both enemies on the one
side. When the head charges move to the other side of the room from which it
appears on so that you get more time to react. ALWAYS keep your eye on the body
though and make sure you have somewhere to escape to that doesn't contain toxic
blood. You really want to take the head out first, as it's the more dangerous
one by itself (the body's attacks are more predictable, so they are easier to
defend against). Keep firing at it but always keep aware of everything that's
going on in the room otherwise you'll get defeated. I had six hearts and a soul
heart on my first attempt as well as dead bird (i was using Eve). I get owned.
I had defeated the body but then misjudged one of the head's charges just
before I defeated it and got killed.

Below is a list of every item in the game, each item's type, uses and possible
strategies and combos possible with them as well as a rating of how good each
item is. All items, except for pickups and Tarot Cards, have their own spot on
the collection table that can be found on the main menu. After each item's name
their position on the table will be given. The rows are counted from top to
bottom and the columns are counted from left to right.

Note that all the different pills count as one overall for the purpose of
filling the Collection table, as do Tarot Cards.

When I give my opinions on items, I'd just like to say that I definitely prefer
buff items over ones that are used to kill enemies. I just find that full stats
help more in the long run and that if you're smart you can deal with any enemy
with your tears alone. This fact will tend to be reflected in my comments on
each item.

The comments will only be found on items that aren't very obvious in how
valuable they are (ie. pickups and stat padding items won't receive any form of
comments).

Pills are the only items within the game that don't each have a specific
effect. Instead, an effect is randomly paired with one of the different
pill types at the start of each playthrough. This means you'll never know
what pill has what effect until you use it. The pill-effect pairings will
be the same until you die or finish a playthrough where they'll then be
randomized once again.

The first time you get a type of pill the words 'Pills Here!' are displayed.
The pill is a Q Item therefore it fills the Q Item Slot until it's used.
Only one Q Item (Pill or Tarot Card) can be held at any one time.
'???' is displayed next to the pill as its effect is unknown until you use it.
If you get the same pill a second time in one playthrough (and any subsequent
times) the effect will be displayed as you now know what it is. The different
pills and effects that they can be paired with are as follows:

Recharge items (also known as Spacebar Items) can be used multiple times. To
use, you simply press Spacebar and the item takes affect. Effects can vary
widely. All recharge items have the 'Space to Use' message displayed in the
bottom right corner of the screen on pick up. Each item has a unique room
charge value. This means that you must complete a specific amount of rooms
that invlove combat before they item is fully recharged and can be used again.
To see how close your item is to charging up, see the six bars just to the
right of the Spacebar item box. Once you get six light grey bars, the item is
fully recharged. So if an item takes 3 rooms to recharge, 2 bars will fill each
time you successfully complete a combat room. The only Room Recharge value that
doesn't rise linearly is the 4 room recharge. It increases first by 1, then 2,
then 1 again and finally 2, which completely recharges the item.

EFFECT: When used, an image of the item fills the screen followed by the
spawning of 6 troll bombs in random locations around the room.
_____________________________________________________________________________

COMMENTS: This item can be very useful. Make sure you use it in a room
that's full of enemies, especially difficult ones. It can also be used if
you don't have enough bombs and you want to destroy rocks to get to items,
because chances are that at least one bomb will destroy the rock that you
want it to. When you use it, keep in mind that the bombs damage you too, so
stay away. The explosions of one bomb push others around, so watch out and
predict where bombs will be pushed to and move to somewhere where they
won't be. I wouldn't say I regard this item as extremely useful as I'm
usually in a large surplus of bombs and can usually deal with almost enemy
that's thrown at me, but it can be helpful until you find a better recharge
item. This item can be very strong against bosses though.

EFFECT: The character can now fly and has a bonus to speed at all times
that this item is held. When used, the next arrow key that's pressed will
send you flying at a high speed in that direction. You're invincible until
you hit the wall and stop. Any enemies that you touch until you hit the
wall will be dealt high amounts of damage.
_____________________________________________________________________________

VISUAL: The character is seen riding a toy pony.

COMMENTS: What can I say, even when this item isn't actually being used it
provides the ability to fly as well as a speed bonus. That alone is enough
to keep it. It's actual use can be a bit of a gamble as you only get once
chance to do any damage with it. It really is an excellent item though.

EFFECT: If the Bean is used near an enemy it will become 'poisoned' and
take damage over a period of time. The bean is known as the musical fruit.
_____________________________________________________________________________

COMMENTS: The bean, I find, isn't as useful as alot of other recharge
items, even for a one room recharge, meaning you can use it every time
you're in combat. I find it useless considering that it usually can only
damage one or two enemies (coordinating it so that enemies are all nearby
when you use it is difficult), it needs you to be very close to an enemy
(which can be dangrous for fast-moving melee enemies) and that it doesn't
really do that much more damage than tears would and you can shoot those
from a safe distance! Comical, but relatively useless.

EFFECT: When used, the character gains the ability to fly until the current
room is left, at which time the character loses the ability to fly. Using
The Bible when battling Mom, Moms Heart or It Lives kills them instantly,
but using it when fighting Satan will instantly kill you instead.

EFFECT: After using, the 'using item' animation will play until you attempt
to fire a tear, at which point you'll instead fire Bobs Rotten Head. The
Rotten Head works much like a bomb does, but the blast not only does
roughly the same damage as a normal bomb but also inflicts poison on
anything that is damaged by the blast. The poison lasts for a few seconds
and continues to inflict damage until it wears off. Bobs Rotten Head has

EFFECT: When used, the character's damage stat is maxed. Effect wears off
when character leaves the current room. Also increases the chance of a
Devil Room appearing.

VISUAL: When item is in effect, the character has blood seeping from their
eye sockets and the eyes themselves have an angry expression.
_____________________________________________________________________________

COMMENTS: Book of Belial is amazing in early game! Maxing your damage is an
awesome effect, although as you get further into the game and your stats
get higher anyway, it becomes less use as it will only be temporary raising
damage by 1 or 2 points. This is Judas' starting item and really helps. It
has a recharge of only 3 rooms too, making it that much more valuable. I
personally love this item. Obviously as you get further into the game it
becomes of less use and should be traded for a better item, but it can make
the first few levels much, much easier. It's noteworthy that the Book of
Belial increases the chance of a Devil Room appearing, making it that
little bit better to hold on for that little longer.

EFFECT: Gives the character a Soul Heart when used. Makes the Devil Room
much more likely to appear if held when defeating the level boss. Also
makes the boss battle for each level more likely to be one of the
Harbingers.

EFFECT: Creates a shield around the player for a few seconds. The character
is protected from both projectile and touch attacks. For all intents and
purposes, the character is invincible during this time. The shield flashes
when it is about to disappear.

COMMENTS: This item is helpful for dire circumstances, but if you play
carefully, you shouldn't need it. Plus it's only invincibility for a few
seconds but has a 3 room recharge which is relatively long for what it
gives. I wouldn't worry too much with it, but can be useful for enemies you
find difficult.

EFFECT: When used, a random item is given. This even includes items that
haven't been unlocked. The name of the item that you have received is

COMMENTS: This item is great, although sometimes the item effects you get
can be pretty crappy. That said, you can get some amazing item effects too.
Getting items that haven't been unlocked yet is also an amazing bonus as
some of those are pretty overpowered. A really good item in general and the

take a full heart of damage.

COMMENTS: After the novelty of this item wears off, what are you left with?
Actually something fairly decent. In truth, this item's just a bomb that
can be used anywhere in the room and can be moved around as it homes in.
I'd sugget using this for boss battles, but you probably shouldn't be in
dire need of it, especially considering you can miss fairly easily. This
means you're just going to wait until you can get a sure shot and then why
don't you just use a bomb? A decent item, but there are more valuable
recharge items to be had.

EFFECT: When used a puddle of lemonade appears around the player (or
possibly urine). If an enemy steps in the puddle, it takes damage.

COMMENTS: I must admit, this item can be used very cunningly. Unfortunately
though, flying units are unaffected and units that can shoot don't need to
get close to you. But all other enemies can be dealt some decent damage and
if placed in a well thought out spot, can create a really effective shield
and safeguard for you. You'll more than likely have to dodge projectiles
though, which quite often takes you away from the puddle. Keep this all in
mind when you're placing it. It's a relatively good item though, plus only
a two recharge.

EFFECT: Gives the character a random pill.
_____________________________________________________________________________

COMMENTS: This item is part of various combos and for good reason. If you
have the Lucky Foot (Cain's starting item) or the PHD, all of the pills
that you receive from this thing quite often turn out to be stat ups and at
the very least, give positive or neutral effects. I've maxed every stat
when using Cain with this item and maxed stats is insanely helpful. The six
room recharge may seem a little off-putting, but if you complete every room
on every floor, you should be able to get 3 or 4 pills on the higher
levels. That's a lot of stat ups in a short time! The non-stat up items are
few an far between so you're pretty much guaranteed it. If you don't have
either of the items which guarantee pills with good effects, the Pill
Bottle is still helpful. Once you've consumed all of the six pills for the
game, the next time you get them their effect is displayed. Although you
may have lost a point or two in stats, it's only once and from then on you
can simply not use the bad pills. The benefits are generally quite good and
if it turns out a really bad bunch of pill effects are being used for the
dungeon, simply throw it away and find some other recharge item. This is
one of my favourite recharge items.

EFFECT: When used, Monstro is summoned and slams onto an enemy, dealing

EFFECT: Drops a large lit bomb with a wider blast radius and more damage
than a normal one.

COMMENTS: This is basically an upgraded bomb. More damage and a bigger
blast radius and able to be used once every two combat rooms. Nice, with
various applications. Good against bosses as you're more likely to get a
hit with the bomb. Also good if you're desperate to get an item but don't
have enough regular bombs to blast away some rock. Quite helpful.

EFFECT: Turns invincible for 6 seconds. If you touch enemies during this
time, they will take a high amount of damage. You cannot fire your Tears
during this time unless you have the Moms Knife projectile.

COMMENTS: Okay, I've changed my mind since writing the original comments
for My Little Unicorn. Seeing it do insane amounts of touch damage against
a boss whilst invincible showed me just how worth while it is. If used
correctly, this item can clear out entire rooms of enemies and almost
completely kill a boss. To do as much damage as possible, move up to the
enemy, use the item and then just keep moving into them continously until
you are about to lose the invincibility. Obviously it can only be activated
every six combat rooms and should generally be saved for the boss of a
level to use it to its fullest potential. Use this for times when you're
having trouble. It's great and should only be replaced if you find a really
awesome item.

EFFECT: When used the character wears the item over his/her face. You can
then choose when to fire a beam that deals very heavy damage to anyone that
is hit. The shot can go through multiple enemies.
_____________________________________________________________________________

COMMENTS: Can be good if you know how to use it and you're lucky enough to
line up enemies, but they don't exactly listen if you say 'Line up straight
so I can slaughter you all'. Can be good to damage enemies through terrain,
especially melee ones that you find difficult. Just hide behind terrain and
shoot. You really need to make sure you're on target though, you can miss
easily. Decent I guess, for a three room recharge, but I don't like 'single
shot' kind of weapons in general. Good for bosses too. A decent one shot
item.

EFFECT: Fires out ten tears in all directions. These tears' damage and

COMMENTS: This is useful for rooms where you are surrounded by a lot of
enemies. It can be used EVERY room too, which is great. That said, you
don't tend to find yourself surrounded that that often and it can usually
be avoided anyway. For this reason, it's a little too situational to be a
good item, but is decent early on until you find a better one.

EFFECT: Teleports player to a random room. This includes Secret Rooms, Boss

COMMENTS: This item definitely has its uses. With a two room recharge, you
can use it fairly often. If you tend to only explore as much you have to
and no more than that so you don't take so much damage, this item can be
helpful. When you enter a room and it turns out to be unnecessary, you can
simply teleport away. This item also sometimes takes you to Secret Rooms,
Devil Rooms and even the I AM ERROR special room. Just be careful, it may
teleport you to the boss room. A good item with a variety of uses.

COMMENTS: This is probably an item I personally like. You'll find yourself
making little mistakes now and then and taking a bit of damage and this is
a really helpful buffer to keep you healthy, especially on those levels
where hearts seem to be non-existant. This is Magdalene's starting item and
I tend to favour her because of it, as well as starting with four hearts.
This item has a four room recharge, but I think this is fair and you
generally don't need it more often than this, unless you're taking alot of
unnecessary damage in which case, you'll DEFINITELY want this. It's a
win/win situation all around.

the items that haven't been given any other category but are still passive.
They are really 'general passive items'.

EFFECT: Every 20 seconds, the character has a single bar added to the item
recharge. This happens only when in combat and only up to 3 bars per room.
You can further exploit this item. If the 3 bars manage to fully recharge
the item and it's used, the counter is reset and you can get another 3 bars
per room. This means that a Spacebar item can be used every single combat
room if done correctly.

VISUAL: The character gains Frankenstein-style bolts protruding from the
side of his/her head.

COMMENTS: Great for patient mechanic abusers. You can combine this with 6
room recharge items and use them once per combat room. Obviously this means
you're spending a full two minutes per combat room though and this would
only frustrate me, especially if I could complete the game without all
these buffs. If you do have the patience, this item is pure amazing. You
can get a pill every room if you have Moms Bottle of Pills, a Tarot Card
every room if you have the Deck of Cards, invulnerability every room if you
have My Little Unicorn (which is sort of pointless, because you're going to
have to dodge an enemy for two minutes just to use the invulnerablity, so
it's stupidly counter-productive, although very novel) and heaps of other
combinations.

EFFECT: Gives the player five bombs. From now on, if a bomb is placed close
to an enemy, it follows the enemy until the bomb explodes.
_____________________________________________________________________________

COMMENTS: This item isn't extremely helpful, but means that if you are
using a bomb against an enemy, your chances of hitting are greatly
increased, making it especially helpful against bosses as they usually move
around quite a bit. A decent weapon and the five bombs are helpful if you
don't have many.

EFFECT: Every 13 enemy kills, the player is healed one heart. Flies don't
count towards the 13 enemies.

VISUAL: Gives the player dracula style hair and an open mouth with a single
cute fang.

COMMENTS: For a player that loves healing items, this item's amazing.
Thirteen enemies is alot less than you realise and really keeps your health
up there, especially in boss battles where alot've enemies are spawned as
well as where you tend to take alot've your damage. Quite a beautiful
passive item if I do say so myself.

EFFECT: Reveals the location of all special rooms, including Mini-Boss
rooms, but not including the Secret Room, Devil Room or I AM ERROR. It
doesn't reveal the floor layout however.
_____________________________________________________________________________

COMMENTS: This item is very helpful, especially if you prefer to rush
through floors, doing only what you have to. It means you can still drop by
the Treasure Room each level with ease and find some sort of item. Although
it doesn't reveal the floor layout, the paths to the special rooms are
generally pretty straight forward and usually the most obvious, so it
shouldn't be too much of a disadvantage. Quite a nice little item at higher
levels and you want to limit the amount of enemies you have to face.

EFFECT: One space gaps can now be traversed; the ladder is placed down when
moving across. This works for gaps between floor space and a wall,
effectively allowing you to 'hide' from some monsters as they cannot move
onto the ladder tile. Flying enemies function as normal as they can move
onto the ladder tile.

COMMENTS: Considering this item nullifies pits, it's great. It means you
can now grab all those items that were previously inaccessible, as well as
being able to exploit the mechanics of it and gain a real advantage over
melee enemies. Very nice.

_____________________________________________________________________________

COMMENTS: This item's great! Flying eliminates any kind of mobility
problems and means that you can quite often move to somewhere that melee
enemies can't reach and you can simply pick them off. When it basically
means that you can't be hurt by half of your enemies, it's got to be good!
Plus your character looks pretty hardcore.

EFFECT: Increases your luck. Luck isn't a stat as it is in some games. You
will now only consume pills with positive effects and have better odds when
you play the skull mini-game in the Arcade.

COMMENTS: As I tend to have a fair bit of money anyway and get too
impatient to make good use of the skull mini-game, that side of the item
doesn't really appeal to me. However, the fact that you only get pills with

EFFECT: Draws items to you, items move through rocks and over terrain,
making this very valuable. The attractive force weakens over longer
distances and at a large range, the item is not attracted at all. Attracted
items included troll bombs, so stay well away whenever they appear.

COMMENTS: I find this item to be great. You're now getting all that money
and other stuff that you couldn't reach. You just have to be very careful
of troll bombs. Make sure you never use Anarchists Cookbook or the 'XVI The
Tower' Tarot Card, that'll get you killed. Make sure whenever a troll bomb
appears you immediately move in the other direction. It does mean a huge
amount of extra items though and it you're careful, troll bombs will

EFFECT: For the rest of the game, the complete layout of a floor is
revealed, including the Secret Room, which is marked as with its usual
icon. Locations of all other special rooms (Boss Rooms, Shops, Treasure
Rooms, etc.) are not revealed.

COMMENTS: Quite a nice little item, especially considering that (if you
have the bombs to open the entrance) can enter the Secret room every floor.
Knowing the layout can also be nice, to conserve time by taking a more
efficient route, but overall is kind of wasted because you don't know where
anything actually is.

These increase your overall stats, making these very valuable. Unlike some
games, even a point increase of any stat will cause a noticeable difference.
I've also included items that raise the amount of money, keys or bombs you
have as they have no more appropriate section.

A weapon upgrade actually changes the type of Tear being used. This is can
effect damage, range and tears but can also change the mechanics of the
shot. See below for information on each.

EFFECT: Damage is maxed and the character can now fire a beam that pierces
everything. This shot is a charge-shot and cannot be used unless fully
charged. Its range is infinite. Each beam deals two lots of damage. Shot
can be charged and transfer across when moving between rooms. Character
will flash when fully charged. As soon as first shot is released the
character can begin charging the next shot. Remember that when charging
shots you must decide the direction of your shot before you fire by holding
down the appropriate button. Direction can be changed midshot however, but
only the second lot of damage will be dealt in the new direction.

EFFECT: Can use a charge-shot that deals more damage than a regular shot
and is also larger. Shot can be shot without a charge, partially charged or
fully charged. Charges can be carried between rooms. Remember that you must
choose the direction you're going to fire in before you shoot, so predict
which direction you're going to be shooting in when changing rooms,
generally the direction you are facing when you enter any given room. Shot
is fully charged when the character's cheeks stop inflating. Can be used in
conjunction with many other weapons items to create more powerful,
generally charge-shot versions of other weapons.

EFFECT: Whenever you hit an enemy with a projectile, you have a small

EFFECT: Lowers Tears down to 1. Gives a triple shot. Player can now
simultaneously shoot three projectiles in one direction.
_____________________________________________________________________________

COMMENTS: I find this weapon to actually be rather frustrating. Personally
I prefer the basic tears than this, simply because you aren't waiting an
hour between shots like you have to do with this. It has its uses, but I
prefer being able to react quickly to any enemy that is suddenly bearing
down on you all of a sudden. Quite often only one of the tears you shoot
will actually hit an enemy annyway, especially at long range. You can
probably use this item effectively, but I simply don't like such a long
pause between shots.

EFFECT: Doesn't raise the tears stat, but the character will randomly fire
four tears at once in the four cardinal directions.
_____________________________________________________________________________

VISUAL: The character now has small horns.

COMMENTS: An upgrade from basic tears with no negatives. The raise for
Tears is nice, but the random four-tear shot doesn't really do as you
should be keeping enemies all together and on one side of you only.

EFFECT: Tears shoot out as normal, but start moving towards the character's
position after a certain amount of time, giving a kind of boomerang effect.
The maximum distance the tear can be away from the player is set to about
1.5 points of range, if it existed. Any extra range means that the tear
will move back towards the player for a longer amount of time. Maximum
range can only be increases if you're moving forward when shooting, making
the tear move at a greater speed and further before moving back towards the
player. Players can shoot around corners and various other things by first
shooting straight and then moving in one direction, effectively leading the
tear around obstructions. Will hit the ground the same length of time after
shooting as it normally would for the player's current range.

VISUAL: The left over water of a tear that moved back and hit the character
is seen on the forehead.
_____________________________________________________________________________

COMMENTS: The best way to work out how this tear type works is simply to
get it and try it out for yourself. It can be hard to explain it through
text. This item is rather interesting, it can be used to shoot tears around
corners which means you can damage immobile projectile shooting enemies
without them every seeing you, which is a nice advantage. It also means
that if you miss a shot, on the way back your tear can hit the enemy which
can be helpful when battling alot of enemies at once as it tends to happen
often. The only problem is the decrease in range. The range of the item
becomes annoyingly deceptive and it can be very difficult to judge whether
you are close enough to hit or not. With pracise though, this tear type has
the potential to be pretty decent.

VISUAL: The character is now happy! He/she stops crying and even smiles.
Tears now come from the character's lower body and has a look of
contentment on his/her face when firing projectiles. Probably one of the
most entertaining items in the game. Tears are now yellow.

COMMENTS: Although your range is rather small, I find this tear is heaps of
fun to use. It's basically the gattling gun of the game (strange
considering you're peeing at your enemies), but with a tiny range. You just
need to be careful not that you have to move in closer to damage enemies.
If you're cautious, there shouldn't be any real problem and the fact that
you fire so quickly is amazing against enemies. The knockback if alot
higher too (more shots = more knockback). One of the best weapons, if you
prefer tears as your projectile of choice.

EFFECT: Turns tears grey. They now pierce everything, except for enemies.
This means you can kill enemies that don't fly quite often before they ever
reach you. Because tears pierce fire, poo and explosive barrels, it takes
more shots to destroy these objects.

VISUAL: Gives the character a very ghoul-like appearance. Flesh on the head
goes pallid. Character no longer cries (I think it may be impossible with
out eyes/tear ducts).

COMMENTS: A very helpful tear. You can now keep terrain between you and the
enemy and still kill them. This is especially helpful against immobile
projectile shooting enemies, they're now totally useless against you.

EFFECT: Stats aren't changed, but the character can now fire lasers. Shots
now pierce enemies, but still don't pierce terrain. Projectile momentum is
eliminated as well as knockback. Very powerful against multi-segment
enemies (Chub, Larry Jr. etc.) as each shot can pierce segments and damages

EFFECT: The character can now poison enemies on touch. If the character
doesn't kill the enemy from the initial touch damage, then the enemy will
deal the player touch damage in return. Most enemies don't die from the
inital touch damage except for flies, meaning there is no way for flies to

EFFECT: Tears now 'wiggle' through the air, making them more likely to hit
enemies. They're no longer affected by momentum. Moving forward whilst
firing projectiles will make them move much faster.
_____________________________________________________________________________

VISUAL: Character is no longer crying and has small beady shaking eyes with
dark rings around them. Their teeth are showing, but not smiling. A bit of
a derp face.
_____________________________________________________________________________

COMMENTS: Wiggle Worm is nice for those people that have trouble aiming
with normal projectiles, as it makes their shots more likely to hit. As
momentum no longer affects them, they aren't as effective at cutting
corners and so somewhat limit a player in how he attacks. No momentum can
be helpful for quickly moving back and forth past the entrance to a thin
corridor (created by rocks) and firing down it without having to worry
about your shots hitting the walls of the corridor, but is less helpful
overall. I'd steer away from this unless you aren't very good at using
momentum to your advantage or if you having trouble aiming.

Familiars are items that follow your character around, lending some form of
support whether it be extra projectile shots or a kind of shield. They are
passive items in truth, but act in a unique way and were given their own
category by Edmund.

COMMENTS: This item is great! You get a massive advantage and great backup
just in case you die and who can complain with that? These seem to be
pretty rare sadly, but if you ever come across one, make sure you always
get it.

EFFECT: Equivalent of Sister Maggy but instead of shooting blood, he shoots
tears. His fire rate is around 1 shot per second. Follows character and
shoots when he does, and in the same direction.

FAMILIAR: A blue grotesque-looking small boy. Follows the character.
_____________________________________________________________________________

COMMENTS: A great item, you can do quite a bit of extra damage within a
short space of time. What can be either great or frustrating is the fact
that the projectiles that Brother Bobby shoots can be just to the side of
the player's projectiles. This can mean that her shot completely misses the
enemy or, if your shot has missed the enemy, his shot might hit. Even so,
Brother Bobby is a great Familiar. There is no difference between him and
Sister Maggy, besides visual differences.

Cube of Meat

EFFECT: Causes a cube of meat to float around the player's head. This cube
of meat damages enemies and deflects projectiles if it hits them. If you
get a second cube of meat in the same playthrough, the cube that floats
around your the character's head turns into a Super Meat Boy head. It acts
as a familiar that shoots out drops of blood when you do, in the direction
you do, up to a maximum of about three shots per revolution of the head
around your character. If you get a third cube of meat in the same
playthrough it turns into a complete Super Meat Boy which is invulnerable,
chases enemies and dealing touch damage. If you get a fourth cube of meat
in the same playthrough, the Super Meat Boy is given a damage and size
buff.
_____________________________________________________________________________

FAMILIAR: The first two stager of the Cube of Meat circle around the
character's head. The other stages follow behind the character, except when
moving off to attack an enemy.
_____________________________________________________________________________

COMMENTS: This item really is cool at any stage. At stage one it will
protect you against projectiles every so often, which can really save you a
heart or two of valuable health. The second stage means you have more or
less the equivalent of a Brother Bobby or Sister Maggy which is always
great and means you'll defeat enemies much quicker. The third stage is
insane. The Super Meat Boy runs after enemies and deals heaps of touch
damage which is especially helpful for those rooms that you seem to be
spending more time dodging projectiles than actually killing enemies. You
can simply dodge projectiles and run from enemies while the Super Meat Boy
kills everything, although this isn't recommended. Even so, it's a great
item, but it can be super difficult to actually get to the third stage. The
fourth stage is just upgrading an already overpowered familiar.

EFFECT: When the character takes damage (from an enemy or anything else),
the Dead Bird appears and chases after any enemies that are in the room,
inflicting touch damage until they are all killed. When enemies are all
dead, the Dead Bird follows the player around like a normal familiar. It
disappears when you move between rooms. You must take more damage to make
it reappear. The Dead Bird can fly over obstacles. For the Dead Bird to
attack an enemy, you must be close enough so that it notices it.
_____________________________________________________________________________

FAMILIAR:

COMMENTS: Quite a nice familiar item and Eve gets it as a starting item! It
means that if you take damage in a room, the battle becomes instantly
easier and can deal with the difficult enemies that you may find much
harder to deal with otherwise. It may even be easier to simply run away
from difficult enemies while you leave the bird to kill them instead. It's
also great for killing immobile projectile-shooting enemies as you can set
the bird on it and as long as you stay out of sight you don't need to worry
about taking any sort of damage. A very helpful item with no negatives.

EFFECT: Lowers your health to 1 heart. You get 9 lives in return. The head
of the cat also follows you and acts as a familiar. When you die, you
respawn in the last room you were in before the room that you died in. If
you had earned any extra hearts, these are lost on death and you respawn
with only one heart.

FAMILIAR:

COMMENTS: I personally dislike this item, but that said, I'm not the most
skilled player and tend to take a heart of damage fairly easily. The fact
that you have to redo the battle when you die only tends to worsen it. If
it's a hard battle against say a group of Maws, I'll pretty much always
take a heart of damage, at least. And if you can't skip this battle (it
leads to the Boss Room), then you may find that you've already used up more
than half of your lives, which makes the item rather pointless in my
opinion. A good time to get this though, is if you already have one heart
of health (or two, if you don't mind sacrificing a heart container) because
there aren't any overly obvious negatives besides the fact that if you gain
more health, when you die it reverts back to only one heart of health once
again. Overall, I don't think this item's really worth it.

EFFECT: A single blue fly circles the player at a radius of about one fifth
of the length of a room. If the fly touches an enemy it deals touch damage
to it.

FAMILIAR:

COMMENTS: A very good item, Forever Alone can be used to take out those
immobile projectile-shooting enemies without any chance of taking damage.
You can simply sit behind a rock and let the fly circle around and kill the
enemy. It's also great for really enemy-heavy rooms as it'll easily connect
with an enemy and can really aid you in clearing the room. Fantastically
cool.

FAMILIAR:

COMMENTS: This item is great at protecting you from those stray projectiles
that you don't always manage to dodge. It can really help to keep you alive

EFFECT: When you fire a projectile, Lil Chubby will follow, dealing extra
damage to any enemy that it hits. It has unlimited range and will stop when
it hits an obstruction, not including enemies. When it hits an obstruction,
it will move back to the character. It takes a couple of seconds to
recharge before it can be used again after returning, although projectiles
can still be shot within this time. A small looking worm that follows the
character around.

FAMILIAR:

COMMENTS: A decent familiar, but nothing too special. Lil Chubby can only
be used once every few seconds and if the shot you fire isn't accurate,
you've wasted it. That said, using it against bosses is very effective as
they're larger so it'll hit it multiple times. Stationary enemies it is
excellent against and is great to use as a 'snipe', where you get one
attempt to do a lot of damage.

COMMENTS: A pretty good item as you'll be getting a steady flow of pennies

EFFECT: Follows character and shoots when he does, and in the same
direction. Her fire rate is around 1 shot per second. Counterpart of
Brother Bobby, but shoots blood instead of tears. A red grotesque-looking

COMMENTS: A great item, you can do quite a bit of extra damage within a
short space of time. What can be either great or frustrating is the fact
that the projectiles that Sister Maggy shoots can be just to the side of
the player's projectiles. This can mean that her shot completely misses the
enemy or, if your shot has missed the enemy, her shot might hit. Even so,
Sister Maggy is a great Familiar. There is no difference between her and
Brother Bobby, besides visual differences.

Latency (Lag)
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
As horrible as it is, latency is in truth as much a part of this game as the
items and the enemies are. Unless you have a PC with insane (and I mean INSANE)
specs, it's going to lag. I've seen numerous reports that people who can run
some of the best games of today on high settings WITHOUT lag. It's poor design
but I don't find it makes the game impossible to play. The lag is caused by
some techy complicated computer stuff that's beyond me because I've never had
the experience. But the more sprites (enemies and other characters) that are
present on-screen, the worse your computer will lag. I run tBoI on a dualcore
CPU with 1.33GHz and it isn't too bad, but if you have a really old PC or
Laptop then you might have trouble.

Ways to fix lag (or at least reduce it):

- Graphic settings ('Detail') set to Low.
- Play on Fullscreen and at 640x480 resolution.
- Get a better CPU (drastic and not worth it just to play tBoI).

Dealing with lag can be tricky, but it's all about experience and being aware
that it can affect the game at any time. It's not just when it goes from no
lag to bad lag that's a problem, but when it goes from heavy lag to no lag too.
You can have an enemy that is bearing down on you fairly slowly and then it's
suddenly running directly at you at three times the speed. It's unnerving. Be
aware of it and be ready to compensate for the sudden (lack of) lag.

Order Each Kill
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Decide a general order of what to kill first. Always kill the
monster that can damage you first, the monster that can damage you first
kill second etc. Don't get overly strung up about this, but just keep the
idea in your head. Usually, if an enemy can fly then rocks aren't an obstacle
and often they'll be able to reach you first.

The first time you play the Binding of Isaac, the only character available is
Isaac himself. To unlock the other characters you must meet certain criteria.
Below you'll find information on each character, including starting stats and
items, how to unlock them and notes on each.

Note that anything in brackets is what the start screen displays stats and
items as (if different from the real stats). What isn't in brackets are the
actual stats.

Remember that these are simply my own opinions. Many people disagree on which
characters better, the main reason being different styles of play and different
skill levels. The characters I prefer, may not be the ones you do.

Isaac
ŻŻŻŻŻ
Starting Stats
Health - 3
Speed - 2
Tears - 2
Damage - 2
Range - 2
Starting Items: 1 Bomb

How to Unlock: Already unlocked.

Notes: Isaac's your starting character and truly is average in every way.
Having a decent amount of health makes him useful to beginners and the bomb is
quite useful, although not that important as you can easily find bombs
throughout the game.

Magdalene
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Starting Stats
Health - 4
Speed - 2 (1)
Tears - 2
Damage - 2
Range - 2
Starting Items: Yum Heart

How To Unlock: Have 7 heart containers at once in any one playthrough.

Notes: The perfect character for beginners! The most notable feature is her
whopping four starting health, making her very forgiving of mistakes. Her
starting item is also used to recover health every few rooms, which is
extremely useful. Her stats and starting item beat Non-D6 Isaac in every way,
so there's no longer any reason to choose him until you obtain the D6. Besides
health, her stats are average.

Cain
ŻŻŻŻ
Starting Stats
Health - 2 (1)
Speed - 3
Tears - 2
Damage - 3
Range - 1
Starting Items: 1 Key, Lucky Foot ('Luck Foot')

How To Unlock: Have 55c at once in any one playthrough.

Notes: Cain has average health and low range, but is very speedy and damaging.
At the beginning of the game he will employ a 'hit and run' strategy, moving
in, damaging his enemies and quickly retreating.

He's quite a good character and his somewhat flawed stats make him excellent
fun to play. Lucky Foot will grant only positive pill effects, so finding the
Bottle of Pills can easily make Cain very overpowered. He's generally the
character with the highest stats at the end of the game, making him quite
powerful to play as.

Judas
ŻŻŻŻŻ
Starting Stats
Health - 1 (0)
Speed - 2
Tears - 2
Damage - 4
Range - 2
Starting Items: 3c, Book of Belial

How To Unlock: Defeat Moms Heart (ie. win two playthroughs).

Notes: Judas is all about damage, starting with four and having a starting item
that can max your damage out every one in three rooms. Book of Belial does tend
to become redundant and not as effective later in the game as Judas often has
maxed damage by then.

He only has one starting health, making him much more difficult to use. Be
cautious and patient when playing as him, otherwise you'll die. His other stats
are average and his 3c starting bonus is simply a small bonus.

Eve
ŻŻŻ
Starting Stats
Health - 2 (1)
Speed - 3 (2)
Tears - 2
Damage - 1
Range - 2
Starting Items: Dead Bird, Whore Of Babylon

How To Unlock: Make two deals with the Devil (ie. buy something from the
Devil's Room on two separate occasions).

Notes: Even begins with average health and good speed, but doesn't do much
damage. For this reason, you need to be ready to put that speed to good use and
do a lot of dodging. Eve tends to be less liked due to her low damage, which
some players find cripples her.

Eve's main focus is her items. Whenever she takes damage in a room, the Dead
Bird will appear and begin helping her damage enemies, but only until the end
of the room. When she gets down to only half a heart of health, she uses Whore
of Babylon to transform into a demon with high damage. Eve actually promotes
taking damage to raise her own, which gives her a somewhat suicidal or kamikaze
type feel to gameplay. You do receive bonuses to help you if you're near death
though, which is very helpful.

There are five environments in the game. Each one is progressively difficult,
but overall The Basement, The Cave and The Depths all function relatively
similarly. Each area has unique bosses and a few have bosses that will always
appear on the second floor of it. See below for information:

The Basement
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
The environment that you start in! This area generally contains the weaker
monsters. It's used as a learning tool for beginners as well as an great area
to stock up on money, bombs, keys and any items you can get your hands on. You
should complete every room on both floors of the Basement so you can stock up
on useful items for when you really need them in later, more difficult areas.
The floor and walls are a reddy-brown colour.

The bosses are:

- The Duke of Flies
- Gemini
- Larry Jr.
- Monstro
- Famine (once unlocked)

The Caves
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
The Caves are still a relatively easy area, but still have a moderate jump in
difficulty compared to the Basement. More difficult enemies are beginning to
spawn and the bosses are all slightly harder. You should still complete every
room to collect good items. The floor and walls are a dull brown in colour.

The bosses are:

- Chub
- Fistula
- Gurdy

Below is a complete list of all the rooms in the game, as well as their
functions and any other information.

General Room - Spawn Room: This is the room you spawn in. There's nothing or
note within the room, but it's always completely free of terrain and never
contains enemies. There are always at least two doors connecting to this room.
The Basement 1 & 2 spawn rooms contain information on controls on the floor.
Has no icon to denote it.

General Room - Non-Combat: These rooms con some form of terrain. They commonly
contain pickups and sometimes chests. Items and chests can be surrounded by
rocks or pits, making it impossible to reach them without destroying
the rocks with bombs, traversing the pit with a Ladder or using the Magneto
item to pull them towards you. These rooms also sometimes contain a beggar in
the centre. He may also be surrounded by rocks or a pit as items can. See the
'Tiles & Objects' section for me details on the Beggar. This room has no icon
to denote it.

General Room - Combat: These rooms contain random encounters with enemies, but
otherwise contain all the features of a Non-Combat room (ie. they will always
have some form of terrain and commonly have pickups and chests etc.) The
difficulty of the enemies is dependent on your current floor. Upon entering
the room, all doors leading out are closed until you finish the battle. Normal
doors (those that connect two general rooms together) can be destroyed by using
a bomb and you can escape the room. Entrances to Secret Rooms can be found
mid-battle also. if you leave a combat room without defeating the enemies, upon
reentering, all doors are reclosed (doors that were previously destroyed have
been repaired and are also closed) and the same enemies are respawned for you
to fight. After completing a battle, all doors are reopened (unless locked by a
key) and there is almost always some form of item reward, although this can
very in quality greatly. The item reward spawns in the centre so they may be
surrounded by rocks or a pit, which will need to be dealt with if you want the
reward. Sometimes instead of an item reward a troll bomb will spawn in the
centre of the room instead, so don't be too eager to move to the centre of the
room to collect your reward until it is spawned. Has no icon to denote it.

Treasure Room: Treasure Rooms are marked with a gold crown icon on the map.
The doorway connects to a general room and is outlined with gold and sometimes
locked. A locked treasure room door can not be blown up with a bomb. The
treasure room never contains enemies, but always contains one item, most
commonly a recharge item. Will also contain a couple of tiles of terrain, most
often a fire or poo. This rooms appears once on every floor, except on The
Womb 1 and 2 floors, where they don't appear at all.

Shop: Shops are denoted on the map by a penny icon. The doorway to a shop is
always locked. Locked shop doors cannot be blown up with bombs. These rooms
always connect to a general room and are found on every floor except the Womb
1 and 2 where they don't appear at all. Unlocking the door is used a form of
payment to enter the shop, so if you doubt you're going to buy an item from the
shop and you only have a few keys, don't waste them opening the door to the
room. Inside you'll find some kind of gruesome statc corpse and three items
with their prices listed below. To buy the item, simply walk on it, you'll pay
the money and get the item. If you don't have enough money to buy the item,
nothing happens. Items with red prices mean that the item is half price (all
items except for tarot cards, pills and general pickups round prices down,
while all of the exceptions are rounded up). The room only ever contains a
small amount of terrain.

Boss Room: Boss Rooms are found on every floor and are marked on the map by a
large skull. The room is always connected to a general room and the doorway is
the same dark grey of a challenge room but displays a skull above it in place
of two crossed swords. Upon entering, the boss is introduced and then the
battle commences. The door leading out of the room is closed until the battle
is over (and they can't be destroyed with a bomb, so you can't escape). The
room may or may not contain terrain and if it does, it will often be terrain
specific to the boss. When the boss is killed a health reward is given and if
there are any other enemies still alive, they must be killed before you're
given your item reward, the trapdoor is revealed, the entrance door is reopened
and the evil Room appears (if you've taken little damage over the course of the
entire floor). The item appears on a rock pedestal at the lower central part of
the floor. The trapdoor, that when moved onto leads to the next floor, appears
at the upper central part of the floor. If the Devil Room appears, it appears
where normal doorways are found.

Secret Room: There is one secret room on every floor. It is marked with a
question mark icon. The secret room is not revealed unless you are aided by an
item or the secret entrance is opened by a bomb explosion or equivalent. Inside
is usually either 3-9 pennies (one or more are sometimes nickles), a slot
machine or an item. To open the entrance to a secret room, you must place a
bomb where the door would normally be and let it explode. When an entrance is
revealed (with the use of a bomb or item), a short sound file plays. The art
style of the room is independent of what floor you're on. The room is almost
completely empty besides the reward, with a corpse and only a few tiles of
terrain present. Without the use of items, the only entrace present when you
enter the room is the door you just came through, but others can be created
with the aid of bombs if there is a room on the other side of the relevant
wall. When you leave the secret room, the entrance closes although the location
of the secret room is still shown on the map and you can reopen the entrance
with another bomb. The doorways that lead to the secret room look more like
caves. Secret Rooms almost never contain combat, although sometimes the
mini-boss, Greed, can be spawned in the room (as punishment for your 'greed'
for entering a secret room for a reward).

Challenge Room: Will be closed unless you have either full health or alot of
it. It is marked by two crossed swords on the map. The doorway conects to a
general room and is outlined with dark grey and displays two crossed swords
above it. Contains one chest or locked golden chest that when opened will
close the exit door (this cannot be blown up to escape) and a number of the
same enemies will be spawned. Monsters come in waves or 'rounds'. Once the
first lot of enemies are dealt with, a second lot, different to the first,
will be spawned. Once these are killed, a third lot is spawned, different from
the enemies before. The rounds commonly progress in difficulty, although this
is not always the case. Once all three waves are killed, some form of reward
spawns in the centre of the room. These rooms always lack terrain and have a
their own art style no matter what area you are in.

Mini-Boss Room: These rooms contain a random mini-boss. They can be found on
any floor. They are not revealed as Mini-Boss rooms until you have entered the
room and it's too late to react. Doorways look like the regular doorways
that connect general rooms and this room is always connected to a general room.
Upon entry, the mini-boss is introduced, the doors close and you fight. You can
blow up closed doorways with bombs if you wish to escape. There can be a total
lack of terrain in these rooms, as well as special terrain that is designed to
suit the boss (the most notable being Wrath's mini-boss room). Upon winning, a
reward is dropped and the doors reopen. The reward is generally of a higher
quality than a general combat room's reward. The room has a small skull icon to
denote it. The icon is only shown once you've entered the room.

Arcade: Arcades appear on a floor when you have a decent amount of money when
you enter the floor. For this reason, it's not possible to find an arcade on
the first floor. To unlock an arcade you must pay 1c, so don't go in unless
you're actually going to make use of the arcade! It's marked on your map with a
red die icon. Inside you'll find three objects - a blood donation machine, a
slot machine and the skull mini-game. These can be used as you wish. See the
'Tiles & Objects' section for details on these objects. The room contains
little terrain but sometimes spawns a heart or penny upon entry. Arcades are
always connected to general rooms and never contain combat.

Devil Room: Devil Rooms appear after a boss fight and connected to a Boss Room,
if you either have full health, or alot of health. Devil Rooms never contain
combat and their doorways are the same dark grey as Boss Rooms and Challenge
Rooms, but have the Devil's head over the doorway. Devil Rooms have a unique
art style independent of the environment you're in. The room always contains
the Devil Statue and two fires. Otherwise, the room functions just like a shop.
The currency however, is Heart Containers or Soul Hearts instead of Pennies. If
you buy an item that costs more Heart Containers than you have, you'll die. Upon
leaving this room, the entrance to to it disappears, so you can only enter once
per floor. When inside, the rest of the map is hidden, possibly implying that
you're in another dimension. This floor doesn't appear on the first floor and
is more likely to appear the further into the game you get. A question mark
denotes this room, but will only be shown when you're actually inside.

I AM ERROR Room: COMING SOON!

Terrain and How It Works
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
In this game, terrain can be your best friend or worst enemy depending on how
you make use of it (or don't). If you know how the variety of enemies act, you
can manipulate the terrain and their AI so that you only have to deal with less
enemies at once, which can mean life or death at points. Obviously this can't
always be applied, but if you apply it when you can, you'll find that you'll
survive a whole lot longer and win much more often.

First off, you have empty floor space. You and your enemies can move around and
attack in this area. Then you have rocks. These cannot be traversed by you or
any flightless enemies, but can be destroyed by bombs. Enemies that can fly
will in fact be able to fly over these rocks, so keep this in mind. In the
enemy list, each entry will give the full AI for each monster. If you are
struggling with any enemy, check its AI and a few tips on how to deal with it.
If you're still struggling, come here for a couple of general tips.

Version 0.75 Dates: 31/05/2012 - 1/06/2012
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Update: Minor

Change Log:

- Added in information for a bunch of items
- Expanded on a couple of item entries
- Reformatted the item entries
- Miscellaneous edits

Notes: The next of the block of updates and the final one before the weekend.
I'm realising that a lot of my item entries need re-writes. Some of them are
rather terrrible. One of the things to look out for in coming updates.

The item entries looked all mashed together and horrible, so each one has now
been placed into a box, separating them out and making them much easier on the
eyes. That will be the majority of the re-formatting out of the way.

Anyone that's contributed something, I haven't forgotten about you! I'll add in
all that information in one of the coming updates!

I'm happy to hear about almost anything including but not limited to:

- typos
- any form of mistake
- your own strategies
- effectiveness of strategies
- your own strategies
- mechanics of the game
- corrections on enemy and item info
- formatting feedback
- overall feel of guide
- etc. etc.

I'd ESPECIALLY like to hear about:

- The exact requirements for the Devil Room to appear.
- The mechanics of the 'Bad Trip!' pill effect.
- The exact stat-ups of the Tarot Cards III and XI.
- The recharge time for the Deck of Cards item.
- The amount of time Moms Bra and Moms Pad are in effect for.
- The stat effects of Book Of Belial, The Belt, Magic Mushroom, The Mark, The
Pact, Roid Rage and The Sad Onion.
- Any extra effects that I've missed for ITEMS ALREADY IN THE GUIDE.
- Exact health of any of the bosses I currently have information for.
- Whether you must defeat all of the Harbingers or just one to achieve "The
Book of Revelations Has Appeared In The Basement" secret.

The only thing I don't want to hear about, as of yet is:

- completely new entries for enemies and items not already included in the
guide.

*This is because I'm going to have to verify items myself anyway, so there's
no point in this. You've been forewarned, so if you send info on new items in,
don't expect credit on this.*

Of course, you will be credited for any help you give me (if it is actually
helpful). Credit for major things will not only be given in the devoted
'Credits' section but also where the information is directly placed within the
guide.
