"Somewhat surpasses Age of Empires 2"
Age of Empires 2 The Conquer Expansion focuses on new civilizations, campaigns, and game play features for Age of Empires fans alike. Released shortly after Age of Kings, TCE allows players to experience the brutal conflicts through the roles of the Spanish, Huns, Koreans, Aztecs, and Mayans.
Gameplay: (9/10): New to The Conquer Expansion are several game modes which include Defend the Wonder, King of the Hill and Wonder Race. Defend the Wonder allows players to hold their wonder fo a set amount of time while your enemies try to destroy it. The interesting part about this is that your enemies actually team up as one to attack you rather than attack each other while you just sit back and wait until the timer goes down for your typical instant win. Wonder Race and King of The Hill reflect their respectable names. Wonder Race allows you to see who can build the fastest Wonder and hold it for the longest time while King of The King is basically who could last the longest ingame depending on score.
Age of Empires 2 TCE adds a number of interesting features that were excluded in Age of Kings. One being that units can now garrison in Rams which adds more protection along with speed and attack. Settlers no longer standing idly by after finished chopping wood or exhausting a farm. They automatically gather resources on their own when it's within their sight or after constructing a drop off site. Remember how your Catapults or Trebuchets would always hit friendly units during battle due to splash damage? That no longer happens in here. Siege weapons are much more intelligent in terms of attacking when there are friendly units nearby. Also, there are formations for ships that are similar to units on land. Your typical stagger, line, box, or wedge are include among others which are new.
Campaign (8/10): There are four new campaign modes that are only available in TCE. Included are Attila the Hun, Montezuma, El Cid, and a collection of single based scenarios on historic events like Battle of Hasting and Agincourt. Each one creates the feeling that you really are Attila the Hun while raiding and pillaging towns and settlements or as Montezuma, while defending the Aztec empire against Cortez.
The Civilizations (8/10): Each civ plays differently from another in any Age of Empires game and The Conquer Expansion is no different. The Aztecs and Mayans are the only civilizations that lack the ability to train cavalry and gunpowder units while the Huns start with a 200 population slot without the need of houses and are used for early raids. Koreans are more of a defensive style of civilization while the Spanish are more of a late booming economy/military civilization. Missionaries, Petards, Plummed Archers, Eagle Warriors, Tarkans, Turtle Ships, and War Wagons are just a few of the many new units that are included for the TCE civs.
Maps and Closing Comments.
There are new maps that include Arena, Ghost Lake, Mongolia, Salt Marsh, Scandinavia, Yucatan, and Random Land. A few of them are tropical while others are set in a snowy environment. In short in terms of replay, Age of Empires 2 The Conquer Expansion will last you a very long time. It's innovative game play and features adds tremendous replay value for even most dedicated Age of Empires fans alike.
