Age of Empires II: The Conquerors Expansion
Review by Mike Truitt
"Doesn't Live Up to the Hype"
When Age of the Empires II came out, fans of the original game really came to appreciate the game even more so than they already had. With the basic premise of creating your own empire and controlling your newly created land, many people were suspicious and even hesitant to get Age of the Empires, much less the sequel to it because of its main competition, Civilization. As more and more people began playing the game though, more and more people played it and enjoyed it. Success soon followed the Age of the Empires series. It was during this time when a supped up version of the sequel came out on to the Windows gaming platform.
As a real time strategy game, Age of the Empires II: Gold Edition really stands out above its competition. With more features and less slow down time than its ''civilized'' competitor, Age of the Empires II: The Conquerors sets its self on a platform higher than Civilization II (or any of the other ''build your own country'' real time strategy game).
I have found that there are many Windows games as well as Macintosh games whose controls are any thing but stellar. However, the genre of real time strategy games have lended themselves to the well to the keyboard. Once you have the controls figured out and down, they become very simple and make the game much more enjoyable than it was when you first got the game.
Graphically, Age of the Empires II: The Conquerors is quite insufficient in its presentation. Not too much more than somewhat well designed buildings and little men grace the landscape of your empire. The one and only camera angle is really quite a bit of a distraction, and can often times be really annoying.
Windows games have always had a plague of bad sound systems in the game. I don't know if it is the poor system installed in the computer, or just the games being bad. Probably a bad combination of the two. Age of the Empires II: The Conquerors is another victim of this all too rampant disease.
For those looking for a good real time strategy game that is easy to figure out and is fun, yet challenging, Age of the Empires II: The Conquerors is the best game out for Macintosh that you can get. Due to the complete lack of presentation graphically and audio wise, if you have a Windows or another system with games similar to Age of the Empires II: The Conquerors released, then you might want to go with those games instead.
