"Worth the $$$?"
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault: Breakthrough is an expansion pack designed to make more money. It's pretty good, but if you didn't like the original game, it's not worth it.
I give it a 7 because I am running a 733mhz game on a 633mhz computer. The AI is smarter in a lot of ways, but they don't charge you anymore; you have to charge them. In some ways this is better, but you can sit behind a barricade, pop your head up, shoot, and crouch down again. The new weapons are nice (especially the Italian pistol), but it lacks something. Your allies are a slight upgrade from Spearhead, but they can be very mindless at times.
The entire series of MOH games are always credited with great sound quality and this one continues that tradition. Whether it's building blowing up, or just shooting your rifle, it sounds real. Sometimes, though, the game will forget to load a particular sound (say a pistol) and you think, Hey! A silencer! When in reality, the Nazis are gathering up numbers outside to kill you easily.
Internet Play: ??/??
I have a really old dial-up connection (28.8k), so I can't connect to play it. I've played it offline and the levels look excellent. Some, though, are a maze and are hard to navigate in. Most, however, are very nice.
Not only does everything look real close-up, but it even looks good at a distance! Crank up the graphics settings and you're an actual soldier battling the Nazis. Although, higher graphics settings = slower gameplay. Pockets, ears, and creases in clothes are something illustrated here that most games don't have.
If you look in a history book, or search on the internet, you'll be able to predict the missions you go on. But this game was made with veterans helping the storyline. Although, the one-man-killing-everything-and-winning-the-war-easily thing isn't very realistic, you have to admit that it's good. If anything though, this game deserves a high mark. Real battles described from real people are an added factor.
Replay Value: 7/10
I think it's nice to play the levels again every once-in-a-while, but that varies between people. Some missions are great, but others are just fillers. Levels with extreme AI-loading are boring to sit and wait for. Big battles and the choppiness factor also take some points out of this.
This game was great to play and finish. I look forward to Pacific Assault when/if it comes out. There are the rare occasions when you come upon an annoying part and you have to load your game 100,000 times to beat the level.
