"The unreal engine proves its the best"

Unreal Tournament 2004 is incredible, another fantastic release from the Unreal Tournament series. From the second you hear the spawn sound effect as you appear on another map to the end of another life as your remains litter the floor. Be prepared for an immense experience. Then after a lot of practice, be prepared to get beaten all over again by the skilled online players.

Graphics 10/10
Clean and clear graphics all the way, the graphics are very impressive. The world seems so realistic, the graphics look perfect, every tiny detail like the bullet holes in the walls from missed shots make this game beautiful to look at. The way the maps that come with the game look is astounding to say the least, however if you are on a fairly old PC, the graphics will need toning down just to keep your computer from giving up, this was a bit of a shame however with a latest speec PC the game runs perfectly even at max graphic detail.

Sound 8/10
Atmospheric and at times frightening, as you hear . Footsteps behind you as a bot walks across a noisy floor or the loud rattling of the machine gun further enhance the feeling of realism. The sound is clear and with surround sound, you can instantly tell what is going on, what powerup someone just collected, what weapon they are firing at the back of you. The music however wasn't incredible, occasional tracks were good, however for the most part I preferred my own music, with the internal music player this was quite easy to set up thankfully.

Storyline 6/10
Lets face it, Unreal Tournament never has that great of a story behind it, you are entering a tournament where its kill or be killed and that's just about the whole story. The game can't really go to deep, however the tutorials are nice looking and fairly funny to watch if you know what you're doing. The game doesn't need that much of a storyline, this game was made for the action.

Gameplay 10/10
Fantastic game play. The beautiful unreal engine makes another triumphant return. Hunt down your opponents in multiple game types, slaughter them with a variety of innovative weapons, from the rapid fire minigun to the old favorite, the classic sniper rifle and the new weapons like the link gun. Not only that but you can create your own game. Make your own weapons and maps, make mutators and whole new game types. The main game is a lot of fun to play many times through however that's not all there is to this game. There is the online mode where you can pit yourself against hundreds of skilled opponents, there is a constant supply of new modifications to play and the opportunity to expand the game yourself (with a little coding knowledge) the opportunities are endless!

Replay Value 10/10
Provided of course you have an internet connection, then the different game types and MODs you can play are limitless. Search around on any good search engine and you're sure to come up with dozens of pages with MODs maps and many other goodies. Without an internet connection however there is really a heavy limit on the replay value and gameplay as the internet provides so much extra for the game.

Rent or buy?
I'd say buy it. Even though the CD isn't required for much after you patch the game. The CD is still required after for any more updates. Buy it if you can this game is worth every last penny. If you don't have it, go and hit the shops.
