Can't get the tilde key to open up the console. ?

I click the tilde key, doesn't open the console. Running the cursed
Vista. Any ideas, please?

Thanks in advance

tried the suggestions above with no luck. The console is just not opening. Type in anything and my toon moves, jumps, or whatever the corresponding key says to do. I have another comp with Win XP running and the tilde/console works just fine. Dang Vista!!!
Any other ideas, guys?

Well sir, good try but no go:( I could find no device or anything to indicate a remote sensor. I did find a remote access capability to enable Microsoft to access my computer (of course, only to help me out and allow an open door for their techs). Needless to say, I promptly deactivated that!!

Anyway, still have the same problem. Tilde key does nothing. It does work on my other comp with Win XP. I am very tempted to install XP on this comp too.

With some resolutions, the console does not actually show. It is to the left of the screen, past the edge. To check if this is the case, press ~ then type about 20 letters in. If you see something on the bottom left of the screen, it is your resolution.

One way around it is to change your resolution to a widescreen resolution, do whatever you want with the console, save, return to your normal resolution.

You could also type in the cheats blindly. As long as they are typed correctly, there will be no problem with them. This is what I have been doing sense I found out that the console was off screen.

To see the console an easy way to check that it is opening is, to go into walking mode (pip boy down and gun drawn) and the press the tilde key and see if the mouse shows up, if it does then the console has come up, check the bottom right of your screen for a text cursor as well, some resolutions have trouble showing the console, try blind cheating if this is the case.

If you bought it from Steam, try to go to "My Games" and right-click on Fallout 3 then Properties > Set Launch Options > then type "-console" without the quotations. If you didn't buy it through Steam, console should already be enabled.

Not true, I bought it from steam and just pressing ~ worked.

Remember, this is not a valve game...

Because the game has stemmed from Oblivion, it presents many of the same problems. This was also present in Oblivion (the no console bug). There are a few ways around it:

1) If you have a Vista or Media Center, and you have a remote sensor, it should be removed. It has been known to cause problems (and I've helped lots of people who couldn't open it).

2) If that didn't work, you probably have an infrared one built in. Look in the "Device Manager" in the control panel and try to find it then disable it. This occurs mostly in laptops.

Go to this site and read the steps... i had the exact problem but one step further... it was on a laptop and this fixed the problem. Hopefully, it will do the same to you.

Well, if you have multiple keyboard configurations for multiple languages installed on windows then you should be able to click alt-shift in windows or ingame to switch between then.

Basically just hold alt and then press shift, for everytime you press shift the language should shift...that is if you have more then one language configuration.

I mention this because I have 3 languages installed with windows for the ones I speak, so whenever I cant open the console I just use this trick since the "tilde" button varies on keyboards from configuration to configuration, meaning the languages you have for Windows.

Have you tried pressing different keys? Regional keyboards are sometimes mapped differently. I dont use the ~ key I use the ` key instead. sometimes games have mapped my ' key also.

If you are useing an xbox controller with the PC version, it will not open in Vista (can't say if it does in XP)

Rated: +0 / -0

R you using a controller?

I had to unlock mine to get the console to show up

Rated: +0 / -0

I meant I had to 'unplug' the controller from the computer to get the ~ to work...

I am using a 360 controller on Vista

Rated: +0 / -0

Are you using a 360 controller by chance?

If you are then the keyboard and mouse are disabled by default. The easiest thing to do is to hist start and go to settings. disable your controller and your keyboard will then be enabled. now hit your ~ key and the console will come up. when your'e done use your mouse/keyboard and re-enable your 360 controller. all better!

If you are on Vista, this works. (I tested using Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate SP1)

Go to the Fallout 3 shortcut on your desktop, right click it, and select properties. Click the compatibility tab, and check "Run this program in compatibility mode for..." and select Windows XP SP2. Click OK. Now, right click the shortcut, and select "Run as Administrator". The console should now work.

If there is no shortcut on your desktop, just use the shortcut wherever it is located or select the Fallout3.exe file in your Program Files folder.

I hope this helps,
Asad.

That 's a good suggestion, Asad.

Unfortunately my console still won't come down. At least it may help others with the same problem.

Hmm, that's strange.

I tested this for myself and a friend and it seemed to fix the issue. Do be aware that I uninstalled my infrared transeiver drivers before this.

Other than that, I'm extremely sorry, but nothing else occurs to me.

Asad.

What are these Infared Transievers? I hear em eveywhere i look for fixing the Fallout 3 thing. None of them worked, but i cant figure out where to find the infared thing. I looked under Device Manager and everything, cant find anything about infared stuff. And i've tried just about everything else too. Can someone help?

kennyblah,

Infrared Transceivers can be found under Device Manager in the Human Interface Devices category if you have one installed. In addition, also try the method I mentioned above if you haven't already. ;)

As an example, here is a screenshot of mine - which I have now uninstalled.

I hope this helps,

Yep, checked under the Human Interface, no infared stuff, just some USB thing.

Which OS are you running?

Rated: +0 / -0

Im running Vista 32. :\
Seems like its having a lot of trouble with the consoles. And also, just as a side note, when i press the ~ key and move around, i still do move, so that means its not even popping up, not that i cant see it. :\

Hmmm....

This is strange. I've now tried running as Administrator (with compatibility mode) on my Vista 32 and four of my friend's Vista PCs, and the technique I mentioned earlier is working.

Strange.

asad98,

Using your suggested method of uninstalling the Infrared Transceivers drivers worked for me. Your link was very useful. Thank you :)

I want to take an image of my Device Manager to have someone point out any potential infrared devices. I've tried to "Print Screen", but nothing works. Can someone please help me? I'm using Vista.

Rated: +0 / -0

asrulxakath, I'm glad I could help! :)

HeathenFan, the Print Screen key should work. Just open Device Manager, press Print Screen. After that, open the Start Menu, type "mspaint" (without quotes) and press enter. Now, just click Edit, and then Paste, and then save the image. I hope this helps.

Darrah - that's great. Enjoy my friend! :)

HeathenFan and kennyblah,

That's pretty strange - I think it's safe to say you have no infrared transceiver after careful examination of your screens. If you have indeed tried running under Compatibility Mode, then I'm afraid I have no advice, for now. I'm still researching this and may have some ideas for you soon. To ensure that we remain in communication, why don't you visit my blog http://asad.geeksmack.net, and then just send me an e-mail via the Contact page so that I can e-mail you if something pops up.

Alright, so i tried to remap the keys, using a key tweak program. Unfortunately, that didnt work either.. I think there really is no way to fix this without a mod now. o-o
