    Hello and welcome to my new FAQ. It is still far from complete. I will upload
    changes in the next weeks. If you have any criticism, improvement suggestions,

    ------------------------------ 2. Hints and Tips -----------------------------

    1. TREASURE CHESTS and ALTARS
       - LEAVE OPENING THEM UNTIL THE LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT, if possible. They both
         give you experience based on your CURRENT LEVEL, so the longer you wait,
         the bigger your reward!
       - CHESTS: ALWAYS choose the GIVE IT TO THE TROOPS option when you are
         offered it, as this increases your Authority and, hence, your army size.
         In any case, by the end of the game, money it not a problem.
       - ALTARS: CHOOSE INCREASES NOT OFFERED BY LEVEL-UPS. Most altars offers
         stat boosts that you can increase with your level-up (Heath, Damage,
         Magic Power, Magic Resistance). As only a few give you boosts to your
         ARMOR, AUTHORITY, INTELLIGENCE or DAMAGE, take them while you can (in
         that order of preference).
    
    2. MISSION REWARDS
       - A few missions give you the option of what reward you can choose. As
         these are all described within the FAQ, carefully decide which is the
         most appropriate at the time. In general, I prefer Authority boosts (for
         a bigger army size), but the circumstances *may* dictate something else.
    
    3. COMBAT - TROOP TYPES
       The makeup of your army will vary a lot over time, but at certain points in
       the game, you will tend to stick to specific troop types for a long period.
       Also note that you can TAKE OFF rings that boost your Authority AFTER you
       hire the troops to PUT ON rings that benefit the troops afterwards! Having
       negative Authority doesn't matter once you are in the fight.
    
       Here is a brief guide to the troops to look out for, and when:
    
       AT START - Peasants (strength in numbers)
          sometimes even the biggest opponents can be defeated with numbers. Cheap
          troops can be used to surround an enemy (even if they can't damage them)
          to prevent them killing a more valued target (e.g. You, Kira, Helga).
    
       SIGGURD'S REALM - Militia (Well trained Peasants)
          Second time around, I've experimented with them - not bad, but in some
          cases, double the number of Peasants are better at running interference.
    
       CONRAD'S REALM - Yeoman (long-range heavy hitters)
          These ranged troops are fast, well armored and great at long range, but
          they take a LOT of Authority when you first get the chance to use them.
          A couple can make a big difference to your combat abilities, but too
          many too early reduces your overall numbers, which can be a big problem
          in some missions (e.g. Find Albert). Yeomen will remain with you for a
          long time.
    
       GILBERT'S REALM - Werewolf (shock troops)
          After having met one of these in Conrad's Castle ('Trial by Werewolf'),
          you can appreciate how nasty these guys can be! Very Fast, 200+ health,
          and 100+ damage, they are almost unstoppable. Put in the front lines,
          a group of werewolves can eliminate an entire enemy unit before they
          can use magic or shoot. The best defence IS a good offence, as they say.
    
       DIANA'S REALM - Amazon (great all rounder) / Fury (the best troop overall)
          When you first reach Diana's realm, you can only hire Amazons from Amaz.
          These become an import part of winning the Battle of Amaz. When you get
          control of Diana's realm, however, you gain the ultimate combat unit in
          the game - the Fury. Very Fast moving, heavily armored, devastating at
          range, but still very effective in close combat, the Fury is the best
          value for Authority. Often, you can drop ALL of your opponents at range
          before they react! There is one more troop type you *might* wish to use.
    
       ARTHUR'S REALM - Dragonslayer (ultimate shock troops)
          The ultimate in human tanks, these guys pack an enormous punch in melee,
          and still manage to do almost as much damage as the Fury's at range.
          Unfortunately, they take a LOT more Authority and are only Fast, so you
          will end up with fewer of them, but they look so mean in all that armor!
    
       OTHER AREAS - Experiment with them if you wish but, to be honest, you just
          can't beat an army of Furys (or Furys with Dragonslayers).
    
    4. COMBAT - TACTICS
       The obvious general rule is get them before they get you. Sometimes this is
       not possible, but at least you can try to stay far enough away to avoid the
       enemy getting a first strike. Here are some general guidelines:
    
       (A) TOP ROWS vs BOTTOM ROWS (fast troops at the top)
           Try and put your faster troops in the top rows. In combat, the troops
           of like speed move first 'from top to bottom'. This means that, if you
           have a Fast troop in the top front row, and the enemy has a fast troop
           in the second top front row, you will go first. First strike matters!
    
       (B) FRONT RANK vs REAR RANK
           Only put a unit in the front rank if:
              (1) It is 'shock troops' (i.e. Fast and need to strike first),
              (2) It needs extra range to hit enemies at the back early (Amazon),
              (3) Too many troops for the rear rank, and the unit is armored, or
              (4) It is fodder, used to protect units in the rear rank (Peasants).
           Front rank troops are more likely to be hit by the enemy early, so you
           need a good reason to put them in danger (i.e. your troops hit first).
    
       (C) USING NUMEROUS, LOW-POWERED TROOPS (e.g. Peasants, Militia)
           These troops can, through weight of numbers, wear down a larger enemy,
           but their best effect is to surround an enemy to stop him from reaching
           your heros in the rear ranks, while the heros use magic/ranged attacks
           to kill them. usually keep them in the rear until the enemy move.
    
           When fighting other numerous troops (e.g Wolves, Big Wolves), they are
           not as effective except in VERY large numbers (mission: Find Albert).
           In this case, choose to eliminate as many numbers of the enemy as you
           can in order to contain and eliminate the rest.
    
       (D) USING FAST SHOCK TROOPS (e.g. Werewolves)
           These are your first strike assault troops. They are worth every point
           of the 34 Authority they cost. Being Very Fast, they often move first,
           even against Very Fast opponents.
    
       (E) USING RANGED TROOPS (e.g. Archers, Amazons, Furys)
           These are the guys that can sit back and kill while avoiding the melee.
           Protect them, but only if they need it (e.g. Furys don't). Don't forget
           that you can use magic to speed them up (Hermes' Sandals) or boost the
           damage (Shower of Arrows), but spells usually go off late in the fight.
    
       (F) WHO DO YOU TARGET FIRST?
           This is a hard question to answer, because it varies each time. The
           only sure rule is to *try* and hit your opponents units before they can
           hit you. That said, what do you hit first? Magic users? Ranged troops?
           Basically, it boils down to what enemy units are the immediate threat.
    
           Ranged enemies (Ghnolls) and Mages that boost your enemies (Revenants)
           are good first targets. Most magic users are slow, but some still have
           devastating spells (e.g. Malefic), so hit them early. Keep in mind that
           mages have NO range limit. Most big, heavy melee troops are slow and
           can usually be left until later.
    
       (G) WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU LOSE THE FIGHT?
           If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Sometimes the difference
           between winning and losing is very small. Simple rearranging your units
           (e.g. moving from back to front ranks, combining or splitting groups)
           can turn the tide. You can (almost) always reload from the autosave,
           use 'X' to decline the fight, rearrange your troops and try again.
    
           Unfortunately, sometimes you just don't have enough troops (or enough
           of the right TYPE of troops) to do the job. In these cases, go complete
           a few missions or find a few easier fights, gain a level or two (and
           the Authority that comes with them), beef up your army and try again!
    
    5. LEVELING UP YOUR CHARACTER
       Every time you make a level you have the option to boost one of four stats:
    
           Health - Always a good idea to be able to absorb physical damage.
           Damage - How much melee damage you do (but Magic Power is better!)
           Magic Power - How much magic damage you can do (and at any distance!)
           Magic Resistance - How much magic damage you can absorb
    
       Early on, you need to get your Health up (100 or so), but if you can get
       your Magic Power to 200+, you can overcome the Magic Resistance of most
       early enemies - instant kill. As you can do this at range, your own Damage
       value becomes irrelevant. Don't waste points on Damage - it isn't worth it.
    
       Magic Resistance only becomes important when you get beyond Conrad's realm.
       This is where you start running into lots of enemy magic users. That said,
       shock troops (Werewolves) and Fast ranged troops (Yeoman) can take them out
       before they can cast. Generally, spread your points between Health and
       Magic Power roughly evenly until you reach 200 or so. Then boost Magic
       Resistance.
    
       You should end up with Health 3000+, Magic Power 3500+, Resistance 1400+.
    
    6. ESSENTIAL ITEMS
       There are a lot of items available to buy (or find). Most boost your hero,
       but some enhance your troops - these are more important in the long run. As
       your funds are limited early on, you need to avoid unnecessary expenses.
       Here is a brief guide to the items you want to keep your eyes on:
    
       (A) ARMOR - always useful to boost your hero, new armor can be found in:
           - FISHMER:           Soldier's    Uniform (mission: Find Weapons)
           - SIGGURD'S CASTLE:  Sergeant's   Uniform (mission: Kill Siggurd)
           - GILBERT'S CASTLE:  Lieutenant's Uniform (mission: Close the Portals)
           - DIANA'S   CASTLE:  Captains's   Uniform (mission: Battle of Amaz)
           - WINDROSE:          Lt-Colonel's Uniform (mission: Tokugawa)
           - ARTHUR'S CASTLE:   Colonel's    Uniform (6000 Gold from Blacksmith)
           - HERTWIG'S CASTLE:  Marshal's    Uniform (after freeing Hertwig)
           - AIRATH PENINSULA:  Sohei        Clothes (after saving Sohei leader)
           - CLOSED CHEST:      Emperor Combat Armor (after opening chest)
    
       (B) RINGS AND AMULETS
           - FISHMER - Ring of Wrath (500 Gold, UNITS: +5 Damage). When you have
             Peasants, this *doubles* their damage, but is useful for a long time.
    
           - FISHMER - Ring of Swiftness (25000 Gold, UNITS: +1 SPEED). Fantastic
             value, especially if you have tough troops (e.g. Dragonslayers).
    
           - HUNTERVILLE - Ring of Authority (360 Gold, HERO: +36 Authority). This
             will let you hire a Yeoman (almost) or 18 Peasants - enough said.
    
           - HUNTERVILLE - Ring of Shooter (10000 Gold, UNITS: +10 Ranged Damage,
             +1 Range). Useful much later, when you can afford it, if you need it.
    
           - SIGGURD'S CASTLE - Ring of Stone Skin (1500 Gold, UNITS: +10 Health,
             +5 Armor). Benefits your 'cheap' units the most, but very handy.
    
           - DIANA'S CASTLE - Ring of Invulnerability (9000 Gold, UNITS: +50
             Health, +20 Armor, +20 Magic Resistance). BEST TROOP DEFENCE - EVER!
    
           - ARTHUR'S CASTLE - Ring of Steel Skin (7000 Gold, UNITS: +50
             Health, +20 Armor). THE SECOND BEST TROOP DEFENSE - EVER!
    
           - ULRICH'S CASTLE - Ring of Swift Attack (60000 Gold, UNITS: +1 SPEED,
             +20 Damage). THE BEST SPEED RING (Dragonslayers) - EVER!
    
           - ULRICH'S CASTLE - Ring of Swift Defence (80000 Gold, UNITS: +1 SPEED,
             +20 Health, +20 Armor). THE SECOND BEST SPEED RING (Dragonslayers)!
    
    7. WHAT IS POSSIBLE AT THE END
       This is just an idea of what is possible to have by the end of the game.

        Where - From the Healer immediately after the Intro
    
    Task: Go to the village elder and speak with him.

    2.  Mission: Find Weapons
        Where - From the Healer immediately after the Intro
    
    Task: The Blacksmith in the sea tells you that he will give you an old sword
    if you get ore from the mine. You have to fight a load of Undead, so don't go
    alone. Expect the following opponents:
    
    1 Cadaver
    1 Zombie
    1 Bogl
    2 Zombie
    
    After the fight, gets the item from the cart and bring it the Blacksmith
    
    Reward: (Levelx50) experience, Soldier uniform

    3.  Mission: Save Kira
        Where - Off Thgarr, before the portal in Fishmer
    
    Task: Save Kira from being burnt as a witch. You have two choices
    
    (a) You can pay 150 Gold to the guards.
    (b) You can fight the guards with Thgarr's help.
    
    Reward: (a) +(Levelx4) Intelligence, (b) (Levelx50) experience.

    4.  Mission: Food and Roof
        Where - From the Healer immediately after the Intro
    
    Task: Speak to the village elder again.

        Where - From the village elder at the portal in Fishmer
    
    Task: Kill the wolves North of Fishmer. There are two ways to complete it.
    
    (a) Knock out the Hunter (16 Gold, 60 experience) then fight the wolves. With
    20 extra Peasants, keep Kira protected and fight the entire wolf pack:

    (b) If you leave the Hunter, Peasants and Wolves to fight each other, you only
    fight the wolves that are left (but lose out on gaining extra Peasants):

    Task: An Innkeeper owes the Ring Dealer money, but he buried it in the forest.
    You must defeat an opponent to recover the purse containing the money:

    9.  Mission: Scroll from the Tower
        Where - Mage in Fishmer
    
    Task: Get the scroll off the Peasant in front of the Orc Tower. Speak to the
    Mage in Fishmer after discussing learning magic to get the mission. You have
    two choices.
    
    (a) Buy the scroll from the Peasant for 250 Gold
    
    (b) Fight the peasant (he changes into a Werewolf first)
    
    Reward: (Levelx50) experience, plus (a) 225 Gold OR (b) (Levelx25) Gold

    10. Mission: Find Albert
        Where - West of Conrad's Castle
    
    Task: Defeat the animals in the forest that threaten Albert:

    worth lots of experience, but you do not need to kill him for the mission.

    12. Mission: Cleanse the Altar
        Where - from the monk in Hunterville
    
    Task: Destroy the creatures at the altar South of Hunterville around Lungern:

    Reward: (Levelx25) Gold OR +(Level) Magic Resistance, (Levelx50) experience

    13. Mission: Beer Competition
        Where - Healer in Hunterville
    
    Task: After a failed attempt to win a drinking contest in Hunterville, the
    Healer tells you to get a hangover cure. You need to find Hazel Leaf,
    which you can get at the altar South of Hunterville. Bring it to the healer
    and pay 40 Gold for the Hazel Potion. Try the competition again to win now.
    
    Reward: (Levelx25) Gold, +(Levelx2) Authority, (Levelx50) experience

    14. Mission: Kill Siggurd
        Where - From the Intro
    
    Task: Talk to the Innkeeper, he will tell you about a way to sneak into
    Siggurd's Castle. Sneak in and kill him. Talk to the Blacksmith or the Combat
    Instructor afterwards to get the Sergeant's Uniform.
    
    Reward: (Levelx50) experience

    15. Mission: The Mage & the Salesman
        Where - from Mage OR Ring Dealer in Siggurd's Castle (after his death)
    
    Task: The Ring Dealer claims the Mage took money to teach him magic but didn't
    deliver. The Mage says he tried, but the salesman couldn't learn it. You have
    4 possible decisions to make: You can (a) Side with the Mage, (b) Side with
    the Salesman, (c) Split the difference, or (d) Take the money for yourself.
    
    Reward: (Levelx50) experience, plus
            (a) +(Level) Magic Resistance OR +(Level) Magic Power
            (b) Amulet of Armor (+15 Armor)
            (c) +(Levelx4) Intelligence
            (d) +(Levelx2) Authority, +(Levelx25) Gold

    16. Mission: The Recruits
        Where - The Militia Leader in Siggurd's Castle
    
    Task: Speak with him and he will trade you 5 militiamen for 10 peasants.
    
    Reward: (Levelx50) experience, 5 Militiamen

    17. Mission: Trial by Werewolf
        Where - After being taken to Conrad's Castle from Siggurd's blockade
    
    Task: Speak with Conrad and he says you must fight a Werewolf to prove you
    are telling the truth.
    
    Reward: (Levelx50) experience

    18. Mission: Conrad
        Where - After being taken to Conrad's Castle from Siggurd's blockade
    
    Task: After beating the Werewolf, Conrad will swear fealty if you beat him in
    a fair fight. He uses Strong magic (160), so you may want to charge at him.
    
    Reward: (Levelx50) experience

    19. Mission: Escorting Kira
        Where - offered after mission: Save Kira
    
    Task: Escort Kira safely to her hut South of Conrad's Castle. You may want to
    complete as many other missions and battles in this region first.
    
    Reward: (Levelx50) Experience, +(Levelx4) Intelligence,
            plus +(Levelx4) Intelligence OR +(Level) Magic Power

    20. Mission: The Grizzly
        Where - Grizzly Breeder NorthWest from the Arena, South of the mountain
    
    Task: Kill the Grizzly Bear then talk to the breeder. +(Levelx2) Authority
    accepting the mission. Buy 3 bears (162 Auth.) from the Bear Breeder NorthEast
    of Hunterville and bring them here.
    
    Reward: +(Levelx50) experience, You can now buy Grizzly Bears here

    21. Mission: Letter to Steelberg
        Where - Ring Dealer in Conrad's Castle
    
    Task: Bring a letter to the monk at Steelberg. The problem is that Steel
    Mountain is surrounded by Undead.

    22. Mission: The Blockade of Steelberg
        Where - Village elder in Steelberg
    
    Task: Destroy all the Undead besieging Steelberg besieging

        Where - Blacksmith in Steelberg
    
    Task: The Blacksmith asks you to repeatedly strike a Hammer to fix a wheel.

    24. Mission: Tools of the Trade (Healer's Tools)
        Where - Healer in Steelberg
    
    Task: The Blacksmith from Gilbert's Castle can make the scalpel for 100 Gold.
    You need to fight your way through the undead at the gate first.
    
    Reward: +(Levelx2) Authority, (Levelx50) experience

    25. Mission: Gladiator Fight
        Where - The Arena
    
    Task: Defeat a Gladiator in a one-on-one fight
