                               (B) INTRODUCTION
###############################################################################

Painkiller is a modern first-person shooter that many people have likened to
the classic Doom series of games [which are finally being updated later this
year with Doom 3].

The game has you fighting hordes of enemies with a pile of weapons and not a
whole lot of thinking.  It's mainly fast-paced, twitchy action with few puzzle
elements.

Your character can collect the souls of his defeated foes, and once he collects
a certain amount of them he temporarily morphs into a demon.  During this time
all enemies burn with bright flames and become incredibly easy to see.  This
allows you to quickly hunt them down and dispatch them with your deadly shots,
until the effect wears off and you're back to your own weapons.

The physics in the game are very cool to witness as well, because when you
blast an enemy at close range with a shotgun he will go FLYING.  If you're
really close to him when you do it, he'll become a disgusting pile of mush.

The enemies aren't the only thing in the game with such physics though, many of
the background objects react to each other, to you or enemies moving/attacking
them and to explosions around them.  It's really something when you see your
first chain reaction of background objects colliding/exploding into one
another.

As an interesting aside, DreamCatcher Games [one of the companies behind
Painkiller] is based in Toronto, Ontario.  Which means they're locals!
For me anyway ;)

If you find that the game is performing poorly on your system then try lowering

                                  (E) WEAPONS
###############################################################################

Pain Killer
===========

You begin the game with this staff and it has two functions.

The primary function has the end opening up into a series of blades that spin
around wildly.  You can then run at enemies to cut them good or you can
right-click to launch the blades at your target.

The secondary function launches a glowing orb forward that attaches to whatever
it hits.  Hitting the button again returns the orb to your staff.


=======
Shotgun
=======

This weapon is most effective at closer distances, where it deals some good
damage.

Its secondary attack is the freezer, which basically slows the enemy down until
they stop moving after they get hit with a shot.  You can then shoot them with
anything to finish the job and shatter them into many pieces.


========
Stakegun
========

This gun fires sharp wooden stakes with incredible force [and yet there's not a
vampire to be found], but it takes a little more thought to use than most
weapons.  First of all the stakes are affected by gravity as they arc through
the air, so you need to fire above an enemy if they're really far away from you
to hit them successfully.  This weapon also takes time to reload between EACH
SHOT, so it's not that great for taking out large groups of enemies quickly.

The secondary function of the weapon is a grenade launcher, simply launch a
shot and keep your distance before it explodes a moment later.

Chaingun
========

This gun's secondary function is a chaingun and it fires shots very quickly,
and is great for picking off enemies from a distance or cutting through groups
of enemies.

The primary function of the gun is a rocket launcher, and this is also quite
helpful for attacking distant targets, or taking out large groups by either
firing into them or at their feet [even at a nearby wall].


==============
Electro Driver
==============

This gun fires ninja stars very quickly as it's primary function and is pretty
helpful for attacking enemies from a distance.  The secondary function fires a
stream of electricity that is more effective at closer distances.

You can also use both functions at once [press both mouse buttons] to fire
electrified ninja stars.  These kill enemies quickly and they also zap any
other enemies that get close to them for a brief period.  Using this attack
takes a lot of power though, so keep that in mind.


============
Flamethrower
============

The primary function of this weapon is a sub-machinegun and is very helpful for
cutting through large groups of enemies.  It also works very well at sniping
enemies from a distance.

The secondary function is a flamethrower and lets you torch enemies at close
range.  Enemies that are on fire will take damage every few seconds until they
die, or until the flames go out.

Bolt Gun
========

The primary function of this weapon fires bolts at very high speeds.  It uses
more ammo per shot than I would like, but it's still quite effective.  If you
click the middle mouse button [or press Z] you can also zoom in with this
weapon, which makes it VERY nice for sniping enemies.

The secondary function is a group of bouncing explosives that get launched
forward and is extremely effective when enemies bunch up in groups [especially
in tight quarters].

Souls
=====

Souls come in either green or red.  The green ones are much more common and
they refill one unit of health when collected.  The red ones are much more
rare, but they give you 6 units of health when collected.  You also morph into
a demon for a brief period of time once you've collected 66 souls.  If you are
using tarot cards though you can lower that number, to make things easier.


======
Health
======

Health comes in two colours and looks very similar to souls.  The yellow health
refills 25 units of health [up to a maximum of 100], while the red/green health
refills 100 units [up to a maximum of 300?].


====
Ammo
====

The ammo for all the guns and each of their functions comes in many shapes and
sizes, but you'll quickly learn to recognize them.  There is also a REALLY
large ammo box that gives you ammo for all weapons/functions when picked up.


====
Gold
====

Gold comes out of just about any object that can be smashed, and it is used to
place [equip] tarot cards.


==========
Holy Items
==========

These golden items give you 100 gold when you collect them, so they're well
worth finding.


===========
Skull Masks
===========

These masks upgrade your weapons for a brief period, and they also add a red
glow to your vision during this time.  Shotgun shots have no spread to them,
your stakes fly perfectly straight and flaming ninja stars are a few of the
upgrades.

The checkpoints in the Daydream and Insomnia difficulties fully restore your
health when you reach them.


USE THE ARROW at the top of the screen because it always points to either an
enemy or the next checkpoint [it glows red for checkpoints], unless there
aren't any of either in the area.

Smash everything you see, because you never know what you'll find inside.

Your ammo DOESN'T carry over for each stage so don't be afraid to save the
heavy stuff for later.

Holy items are worth 100 gold, so they're well worth finding.

Gold disappears if left for too long much like souls, so collect it ASAP when
you see it.

Collecting black tarot cards is NOT necessary to complete the game, but by
making the extra effort to collect them you can make the game easier.  They're
especially helpful on the harder difficulties and if you want to see the TRUE
ending to the game you'll want to collect all the cards.

You morph into a demon at 66 souls unless you have a card that makes that
number smaller, so try your best to morph into a demon when you have a lot of
enemies to kill.  Souls also restore health [red ones restore more than normal]
when collected, so they're well worth picking up.

If an enemy takes many hits to kill you can always use a stronger weapon, BUT
you could also use the freezer to freeze them.  Once frozen, a single shot from
any weapon should shatter them.

If you are having trouble beating a stage or getting a tarot card, you could
try using the cheats.  This should be a last resort though, because it really
kills the fun of the game.


If you're trying to get the tarot cards, you'll find it much easier to get them
on the easier difficulties.


If you want to play the game on Trauma difficulty, then you need to get 9 of
the 10 tarrot cards first.  Unfortunately the game has a glitch that forces you
to collect all 10 cards before you can access the Trauma difficulty.  If you
have the game patched to at least version 1.6.1, then this glitch is fixed.

You will find the walkthrough [which is based off of the Insomnia difficulty
for all but the Pentagon stage] for the entire game in the sections below.  You
can only play the Pentagon stage on Nightmare difficulty or above.

                          (H-01) LEVEL 01 - ORPHANAGE
###############################################################################

Card Unlocking Status:
- Never get hurt
- Gold: Weapon Modifier Card [100 gold to place]

After the intro you can pass your cursor of over the name of the level to see
the best scores, otherwise click the red jewel to start the level.

If you're trying to get the tarot card for this stage, you will find the Iron
Will card very helpful as well as the Mercy card.  I used those two cards along
with Double Time Bonus.

Part 01
-------

[If you want to find the first secret area you should turn around and jump a
pair of gaps.  Walk across a log next and head for the other end of this
island, then cross a path of logs.  Go to the end of this island and cross the
large log to your right as well as a few small ones.  Jump a few gaps and use a
log on your left to reach the next island.  Walk to the end of this island and
jump from the log to reach some armour and ammo in the first secret area!]

(Now you can backtrack to the start and get on with the level.)


Carefully cross the narrow beam without falling in the water, otherwise you'll
take some damage.  Climb the stairs and kill a small group of headless enemies,
then grab some ammo to the right of the doors.

Ignore the teleporter for now and continue right until you reach a dead-end,
then jump on the railing to your right and climb up the wiring [like a ladder]
on the corner of the wall.  Get off at the next floor and look for some more
wiring on a corner by the chests.  Climb up this wiring too and grab the ammo
in the secret area, then work your way back down and use the teleporter.

Climb the stairs as a ball bounces towards you, then kill an enemy at the top.
Head right as you kill another enemy, then smash the pigs for some gold.
Attack the enemy on the bed to wake him up, then kill him.  Grab all the ammo
here and head for the first checkpoint nearby.

Part 02
-------

Watch as a ghost flies through the door ahead of you, then go through the same
door.  Avoid the shots of the ghost and grab the ammo up the small staircase to
your left.  Carefully follow the ghost up the middle staircase and grab the
shotgun nearby.  Use the shotgun to thin out the group of children, then head
downstairs to finish off the rest.  Collect the ammo on your way down to the
bottom floor, then use the checkpoint there.

Part 03
-------

Kill a small group of children beyond the door, then MAKE SURE you shoot the
child wearing a sheet from a distance.  If you're close when you do this you
might get caught in an explosion.  Jump on top of the large bear in the corner
if you want some health, otherwise enter the next room.

Rush into the closest corner and start filling the children with shotgun
blasts, then collect the ammo and use the next checkpoint.

Part 04
-------

This room is VERY annoying if you're trying to get the tarot card for this
stage and personally I think you should come back when you have some cards of
you own to use and make this easier.

Either way you want to keep moving and kill a medium-sized group of children in
this tiny room.  Collect all ammo afterwards and use the nearby checkpoint.

Part 05
-------

Use the painkiller [or whatever weapon works best for you] to kill a line of
sheet children.  Make sure they don't get too close to you or they'll cry and
explode.  Grab the ammo in this room and the next one after the fight, then
follow the arrow as you backtrack to the next checkpoint.

Part 06
-------

Kill the flaming children and grab the health on the bear if you need it and
didn't take it earlier.  Otherwise smash the pigs in the next room for more
gold and collect the ammo before using the next checkpoint.

Part 07
-------

A large enemy with a meat-cleaver starts chasing you now and you can't damage
him, so instead you just need to keep your distance from him.

Enter the room that he came from and grab the armour to your left, then enter
the next room and kill a few enemies as you head down some stairs.  In the open
room you want to kill more enemies and grab some ammo while still avoiding the
big guy.

Once all small enemies are dead simply attack the big guy in the back until he
dies, then use the checkpoint down the nearby staircase.

Part 08
-------

Grab the flamethrower and use it to torch the ghost, then head for the level
exit.

                          (H-02) LEVEL 02 - LOONY PARK

- Kill no more than 88 enemies

If you use the Iron Will, Double Time Bonus and Mercy cards, then you should be
able to get this tarot card much easier.  Simply kill the enemies like normal
until you reach the rollercoaster in part 06.  When you start this part you
should have racked up 67 kills, which means that you are only allowed 21 more
to get the tarot card.

Part 01
-------

Grab the armour behind you but don't go much farther back or you'll fall to
your death.

Take a few steps forward as some clowns appear, these guys should fall with 1-2
shots from the shotgun so be sure to use it.  The clowns fire a blast of energy
if left alone for two long, so if you fire at them quickly you'll be fine.
Once all the clowns are dead you can collect the stakes by the benches and head
for the slanted metal post in the left corner.

Go to the side of this post that's facing the handrail and climb up it like a
ladder, then drop to the metal roof on your left and take the super health from
the first secret area.  Climb back down to the ground now and head for the
checkpoint.

Part 02
-------

Go up the left staircase [the one without a giant wall in the way] and jump
over the pit of spikes at the top.  Go through the turnstiles and kill a group
of enemies with your painkiller.  Watch out for their fireballs and be sure to
grab a large ammo box on by the left wall of the Acid Bath.  Follow the path as
you kill a few more enemies, then collect the ammo and health before going to
the house of pain.

Face this building to see two windows just left of the sign.  Jump up the pipe
and the corpses to land inside the right window, then take the holy items from
the secret area inside.  Drop back down to the ground afterwards and use the
checkpoint nearby.

Part 03
-------

Switch to the shotgun and start unloading it on the cornies, these enemies are
made of deadly popcorn and also part human.  Either way they throw popcorn that
releases harmful gas and their bodies also release this gas so don't get close
to their corpses.  Be sure to grab the armour and ammo as you thin out your
foes, then head for the checkpoint through the next set of turnstiles.

Part 04
-------

Grab the shotgun ammo as you kill clowns, cornies and flying enemies.  Grab
the health if you need it [or if you didn't take it earlier] then head for the
next checkpoint.

Part 05
-------

Go through the turnstiles and walk up the twisting ramp, grab the ammo on the
way and ignore the checkpoint for the moment.

Instead you want to jump to the roof opposite the house of pain and head left
along it.  Carefully walk under the pipe that's in your way, then jump to the
roof of the carousel on the other side.  Walk around this roof to find some
ammo in the third secret area, then drop to the ground once more.

Head for the acid bath building [near the turnstiles by the spike pit] and
enter the small booth just to the left of the building.  Exit the booth and
enter the [now open] front door to the acid bath, then use the springboards to
get across the acid.  Grab the armour, holy items and super health from the
other side, then bounce back across.  Use the closest springboard to get
through a nearby open window, then follow the arrow to the checkpoint.

Part 06
-------

Now you get to ride a rollercoaster for a bit as you shoot some flying enemies
and some cornies.  It's pretty straight forward, just shoot any enemies you see
so that they don't hit you first, otherwise watch your arrow for the rest and
wait until the cart takes you right to the level exit.

                             (H-03) LEVEL 03 - LAB
###############################################################################

Card Unlocking Status:
- Finish the level using Bolt Gun only
- Gold: The Sceptre Card [300 gold to place]

Secrets:    03
Holy Items: 02


If you use the Magic Gun card from the Loony Park stage, then this card becomes
much easier to get.  Also you can use the secondary function of the boltgun as
well as the primary, just don't use ANY other weapon in this level.

Part 01
-------

Pick up the bolt gun in front of you and use it to take out enemies up high and
then a swarm of them down low.  Remember that you can zoom in by pressing your
middle mouse button, or the Z key.  Collect all ammo around the room, then head
for the next checkpoint.

Part 02
-------

Zoom in and shoot the next group of enemies that comes down the stairs, then
shoot the lines of explosive barrels and collect the gold inside.  Climb the
stairs and grab the pile of ammo by the back wall, then go up the next set of
stairs.  Walk down the hall and kill some more enemies around the corner, then
grab the armour and ammo at the dead-end.  Go back around the corner and jump
up the fallen ramp to get to the catwalk above.

Go away from the checkpoint if you want a couple of secret areas and walk right
to the wall.  Jump down to the windowsill on your right, then use a series of
V-jumps [save after each one if you want to make things easier] to land on a
wider ledge by the next wall.  Look in the corner and grab the holy item from
the first secret area, then turn around and walk along the ledge.  Grab the
nearby super health from the second secret area, then work your way back up to
the catwalk where you first started this detour.

Follow the path along the catwalk as you take some health, then use the
checkpoint just beyond.

Part 03
-------

Collect the ammo to your right, then turn around and use the zoom to kill a
small group of enemies on the rooftops in the distance.  Collect more ammo at
the other end of this area, then enter the next passage.  Kill a few
medium-sized groups of enemies here, and collect all the ammo.  You should
notice one enemy that's stuck behind a barrier.  Shoot the explosive objects
near him to kill him, then head for the checkpoint that appears.

Part 04
-------

Drop down the shaft and kill a group of enemies at the bottom.  Watch for
enemies that drop down to you, then collect the ammo and follow the passage to
a larger room.

Kill more enemies in here and use the secondary function of your bolt gun to
kill an enemy behind the barrier.  This will lower the barrier and let you
clean out the rest of the enemies here.  Climb the ladder [turn up the
brightness if you can't find it] to reach the platform above the last group of
enemies, then take the ammo and armour before using the checkpoint.

Part 05
-------

Drop down the shaft and hug the wall ahead of you to land on a small platform,
look down and land on a similar platform, then grab the mask on the way down.
Shoot a large group of enemies down here and shoot the barrels, then use the
nearby checkpoint.

Part 06
-------

Shoot the large fuel tank to reveal a springboard, then turn right and run at
the springboard to reach a ledge above.  Kill a few enemies as you work your
way around, then shoot a flaming box up here to reveal another springboard.
Bounce up to the third level from here and kill enemies on both sides, then
find the side with another burning box.  Shoot this box to reveal a third
springboard, then look to the middle of the room to see a holy item on a pipe.

Jump to this pipe to get the holy item from the last secret area, then bounce
off the latest springboard to land on the large pipe above.  Walk across the
pipe to get some armour and an electro driver, then follow the path around as a
door opens just ahead of you.  Kill all enemies inside and grab the large ammo
boxes, then use the checkpoint.

Part 07
-------

Carefully walk to the edge of the shaft until you start climbing down the
ladder, then turn to face the ladder as you climb down so that you don't fall.
Walk along the sewers at the bottom until a wall appears, then get ready to
fight some tough enemies.  Use your freezer to make short work out of them,
otherwise use your flamethrower and sub-machinegun to start things off.  Follow
this with your strongest weapons as fast as you can because these guys can take
a beating.  Grab the souls to restore more health than usual, then continue
along the sewers.  Shoot the final spider enemy in the face [when all his
feet are touching the ground] as you keep your distance and it should die
pretty quickly.  Climb the ladder afterwards to warm to the beginning of this
level, then go through the level exit.


###############################################################################
                          (H-04) LEVEL 04 - PENTAGON
###############################################################################

This stage is not available on Daydream or Insomnia difficulty, it's only
available on Nightmare difficulty or above.


Card Unlocking Status:
- Kill Panzer Spider in no more than 04:00
- Silver: Health Regeneration Card [1500 gold to place]

Secrets:    01
Holy Items: 01


I used the Mercy, Iron Will and Rage cards (among others) to earn the card from
this boss.

I find it works best to use the quicksave when each part of the battle starts
and DEFINITELY use it right after stunning the boss in part 02 and part 03.
This way you can try one cannon and if it misses the boss you can reload your
save and try another cannon.

Part 01
-------

[If you want to get the secret for this stage then you need to find the metal
panel on the floor near the middle area of the room.  If you are standing on
this panel and facing the middle of the room, then you want to be close to the
boxes to your right.  Get near these boxes and STAY on the ground when the boss
pounds it with his feet.  This will damage you, but it will also launch you
into the air.  Land on the closest box and jump to the nearby holy item.]


When the fight starts you should rapidly jump around the middle part of the
room to collect ammo and some armor.


This boss is a very large spider and he tries to stomp you with his front legs,
or fire heat-seaking fireballs much like the smaller spiders in other levels.

Like those spiders, you want to shoot this one in the face when all of its feet
are on the ground.  If you have some cards you can use them to speed up this
process.

Part 02
-------

Things change a little once you've drained half of the boss's health.  You
can't hurt him by shooting him with your weapons anymore, plus his whole body
is electrified.  Instead you need to wait until he stops moving and opens his
mouth wide.  At this point a large spark forms in his mouth and fires straight
at you in a few seconds.

Shoot the spark while it's still in the boss's mouth and it will leave him
stunned for a brief period.  During this time you want to run (and jump
repeatedly, to go faster) towards one fo the four cannons in the corners of
this room.  Run inside and walk up to the cannon (unfortunately you can't aim
them) to fire a shot.

If the shot misses the boss then you picked the wrong cannon, but if the shot
hits him then he will no longer be electrified.  At this point you want to use
more cards and unload your weapons into his face to drain the rest of his
health.

Part 03
-------

You would think the boss should be dead by this point, but unfortunately he
electrifies himself one final time.  This means that you need to stun him once
more and shoot him with a cannon to truly kill him and finish the battle.

To get this card I used the Mercy, Double Time Bonus, Rage, Iron Will and
Health Stealer cards.  I used the first set at the beginning to get rid of the
first spider quickly.  I used the second set when fighting the second spider,

enemies it was helpful to shield myself from the flying cars and quickly kill
the smaller enemies so I could kill the fat ones.

Otherwise you want to shoot all enemies as fast as possible whenever your arrow
tracks some new ones.  Pause the game if you need to decide what weapon to use
next and MAKE SURE you jump constantly to move as fast as possible when
travelling between areas.

Save your game between checkpoints and definitely save at the final spider.
Lead him outside and shoot the truck high above, then make sure it falls on him
before you finish him off.

Part 01
-------

Grab the ammo ahead of you and the armour to your right, then collect whatever
other ammo you find as you kill a large group of enemies and one giant spider.
For the group of enemies you want to keep your distance because they explode if
they get too close to you.  There is some more armour to the left of the stairs
where you started, and there's a super health near the far right corner.

You don't want to get too close to the spider either, but you do need to shoot
it in the face.  The spider occasionally slams the ground with its front legs
which hurts if it hits you directly.  This attack also hurts you if you're on
the ground at the time as it sends you flying into the air.  When you see the
spider's front legs rise into the air, be prepared to jump before they hit the
ground to avoid damage.  The spider also releases a burst of gas from its mouth
occasionally.  This gas stops you from walking for a brief period [although you
can still aim and shoot] so you want to avoid it.

Once all enemies and the spider are dead you should collect any remaining souls
and ammo, then use the next checkpoint.

Part 02
-------

Climb the stairs and grab the flamethrower, then look up as you take a few
steps forward.  Kill the enemies that are vomiting down on you, then follow
the catwalk around the corner to reach the checkpoint.

Part 03
-------

Take a few steps and jump along the ledge on the left side of a nearby railing
to avoid some fire, then grab the holy item from the secret area up ahead.

Drop to the ground now as you grab the ammo and armour nearby, then kill
another large group of enemies before you use the next checkpoint.

Part 04
-------

Watch for falling cars as more human enemies and some flying ones appear.  The
flying ones drop molotovs on you so use your chaingun to get rid of them
quickly.  Grab the armour at the left end and the super health at the right end
if you need either, then head for the checkpoint.

Part 05
-------

[Jump from the top of the second fire escape back towards the top of the first
one.  Use the windows to get across, then jump to the rooftop and collect the
holy items and armour from the secret area there.]

Jump up the fire escape until you reach the top, then face the checkpoint and
fire escapes ahead of you.  Rapidly jump as you jump off of the railing in
front of you to reach the next fire escape, then climb to the top.  Do the same
type of jump to reach the next fire escape, then use the checkpoint.

Part 06

Drop to the ground and approach the cars to release a group of enemies and
another large spider.  Grab the super health and armour on the right side of
the area, then kill a group of flying enemies.  Collect whatever ammo you can
find, then head for the checkpoint.

Part 07
-------

These enemies throw body parts at you, but otherwise they're the same guys
you've been fighting this whole stage.  Shoot up the group and take all the
ammo, then squeeze behind the cars in the right corner.  Take some ammo and a
holy item from the secret area here, then use the nearby checkpoint.

Part 08
-------

Climb the ramp and start collecting ammo, then kill a group of enemies and
finish collecting ammo.  Take the super health by the windows, then use the
next checkpoint.

Part 09
-------

Head up the next ramp and start pelting the fat enemies with grenades from your
stakegun.  You'll know when they die because they throw their knife at you and
then their own body.  Keep your distance from the cars as well because if one
gets attacked you can get caught in the blast and take some damage.  Collect
the super health after the fight if you didn't get it earlier, then use the
checkpoint.

Part 10
-------

Walk up to the gate in front of you and kill the group of enemies behind it,
then enter the teleporter up ahead [unless you want to get a secret first].

[If you want the secret here, then you should jump from the windowsill on your
right to the window on the nearby wall.  Use V-jumps to continue along the wall
and down two rows of windows, then continue using V-jumps in this row to reach
a holy item and a secret area.  Now you can backtrack and go use the
teleporter.]

Kill all the enemies in the food court here as you avoid their shots, then take
whatever ammo you can find and use the checkpoint.

Part 11

Kill a few enemies beyond the wall and follow the passage to kill a few more,
then turn around and use a long distance weapon [the shotgun is not very good]
to kill the enemies in the distance.  Grab any leftover ammo once they're dead
and use the next checkpoint.

Part 12

Go to the very bottom of the stairs and grab the ammo along the way, then hide
under the stairs as you lob grenades at the group of enemies with your
stakegun.

Take the chaingun just outside and follow the passage as you collect some ammo,
armour and reach the next checkpoint.

Part 13
-------

Take a few steps to reveal a few fat enemies and some smaller ones.  You CAN
NOT damage the fat enemies until the small ones are dead so find them quickly.
Your top priority should be blowing up cars though, because the enemies start
throwing them at you here and they do A LOT of damage.  Basically shoot any
small enemies as you see them and start using your chaingun on any cars that
start floating, because the next second they'll be flying at you.

Collect ammo and armour as you destroy all the cars, then shoot all the small
enemies and finish off the fat ones with a few rockets.  Collect any items that
you may have missed, then use the nearby checkpoint.

Part 14
-------

Take a few steps and then start jumping back as a pile of cars fly everywhere,
now walk onwards and notice a large spider.  Ignore the spider and quickly run
out of the tunnel, then look straight up.  You should see a really large tanker
truck way up high.  Save your game and shoot that truck when the spider gets
close so that it falls right on him and explodes.  After the fight simply
continue down the passage and use the level exit.

Part 01
-------

Watch your arrow throughout this stage because it's easy to miss an enemy and
not know where he's shooting you from.

Walk forward and grab some shotgun ammo, then start shooting the first group of
enemies as they come around the corner.  These guys have guns and grenades so
you can't really afford to stand still, but you should try to use whatever
cover you can as you fight.

Shoot more enemies in the windows to your right and take the ammo there but
keep an eye on your health.  Run along these windows and grab the super health
and armour up ahead, then finish off both groups.  There is also a tank to deal
with [try to stay close to the tank and fire constantly at the top of it]
during this first wave so keep moving and shoot it as fast as possible to get
rid of it.

Enter the next area and stay close to the right wall as you shoot a few enemies
up high here.  Watch out for a tank up ahead and some more enemies, shoot them
both as best you can and destroy another tank nearby.  Freeze and shatter the
commander to get rid of him quickly, then move the debris to collect the ammo
and head for the checkpoint.

Part 02
-------

Shoot a couple of groups of enemies [one comes through a door to your
right] here with your sub-machinegun, then take out a commander and a few
enemies in the windows.  Grab all ammo and armour, then backtrack to the start
of this part.

Look at the first pile of junk on your left and notice the metal piece sticking
out of it.  Jump repeatedly near this metal piece to get inside the window to
the left of it, then take the holy item from the secret area inside.  Jump back
through the window afterwards and head for the nearby checkpoint.

Part 03
-------

Use your flamethrower to torch the enemies in a nearby alcove as you rush
inside, then turn around and use your minigun to take out a few enemies up
high.  As long as you keep moving and watch carefully for grenades you should
be fine, plus you can always go back to the alcove for a breather.  Collect all
the ammo afterwards and head for the next checkpoint.

Part 04
-------

Head down the stairs and shoot through the enemies in the hallway, then enter
the alcoves for some ammo.  Turn right at the end of the hall and fire a shot
at the barrels, then back up a little so you don't get caught in the blast.

Enter the tunnel to collect all the gold, then kill more enemies in the next
tunnel.  Check all alcoves for ammo as you go, then enter the next area.  Shoot
a few more enemies and shoot a barrel to get rid of the gate, then grab the
health and ammo up ahead.  Shoot more enemies in the next tunnel, then climb
the stairs to reach the checkpoint.

Part 05
-------

Take all the ammo in here and enter the next room, then fire a rocket or
grenade at the group of enemies before finishing them off.  Take the armour and
super health from their alcove, then enter the next area.

Use your rockets to take out the enemies up high, then use rockets or grenades
to thin out the small group of enemies down low.  Finish them off with your
weapon of choice, then go to the mound of dirt in the back left corner.  Jump
up this mound and carefully jump along the nearby metal piece to get in the
open window.  Grab the holoy item from the secret area here, then return to the
ground and head for the next checkpoint.

Part 06
-------

Shoot a small group of enemies in the alcove to your right, then kill a pair of
suicide bombers [try freezing them before you attack] before they take you down
with them.  Grab some ammo behind you, then destroy the tank up ahead.  Shoot
another group of enemies and grab more ammo to your right at the fork.

Head left now and kill a few groups of enemies as well as some up high on the
walls.  Shoot a few bombers along the way and return to the fork.  Check the
wall by the crater in the sidewalk, then jump through the open window to find
an empty secret area.  Jump back through the window and follow the arrow to the
next checkpoint.

Part 07
-------

Shoot a few groups of enemies, a couple commanders and a pair of tanks, then
head left at the fork in the road and check behind a wall for some armour that
you'll likely be needing.

Turn around and shoot some more groups of enemies to reach another fork.  Shoot
a pair of tanks and some enemies here, then go right and straight for some
ammo.  Head left to finish off the rest of the enemies and grab some shotgun
ammo by the left wall, then use the checkpoint.

Part 08
-------

This last part is quite hard and it has you fighting a large group of enemies,
a few bombers, and about three or four tanks.  There is some ammo around the
walls but there is only one health that I could find to your right by the fire
when you enter this area.

Pretty much shoot all enemies as fast as you can and KEEP MOVING.  I found that
it worked well to use a wall for cover from the tanks, then pick off the
smaller enemies from there.  Once all enemies are dead you should see the level
exit, but MAKE SURE you save your game before going to it.  Once you get close
to the level exit it disappears and you hear a bomb falling, so RUN AWAY as
fast as you can or that bomb will land right on top of you.  After the bomb has
exploded you can go back and use the level exit successfully.


[If you want to find two more secret areas though you can do the following once
the final bomb has fallen.

Enter the broken building behind the statue and enter the only open door to
find a holy item in one secret area.

Go to the point where you used a checkpoint to start this part, then follow the
streets back.  Go right at the first fork, left at the second fork, then turn
right around the corner and enter a tunnel on your left.  Take the holy item
from this secret area, then go and use the level exit.]

*NOTE* I got over 330 souls and failed to get the card, then I reloaded an
earlier save and got exactly 330 souls and still failed to get it.  I then used
the Dark Soul card and finished the level with exactly 250 souls and still
failed to get the card.

Apparently this is a common problem for a lot of people, but this glitch is
fixed in the official patch [as of V1.6.1] for the game, which you can find at:
http://www.gamershell.com/download_8160.shtml


If you don't want to download such a large file you can also get a much smaller
UNNOFICIAL fix created by Kalme.  You can use his patch here:

Simply extract that zip to painkiller\Data\Levels\C6L6_Colloseum\ (effectively
creating a Levels folder in the Data folder) and run the game like normal.


In order to get the card for this stage it means that you need to get 330 souls
[or 250 souls if you use the Dark Soul card].  In either case you want to kill
the enemies slowly and run a lot to keep your distance from them as you collect
the souls.  It helps a lot if you use the Soul Catcher card to bring souls
towards you.  The Soul Keeper card is also good because you have more time to
collect the souls before they disappear.

This stage also has a LOT of gold, so if you need some [to place some other
cards for example] you should come here to get it.

Part 01

Enter the room up ahead and kill about 20 warriors [grenades or rockets work
wonders if they bunch together into groups], then check all alcoves for some
health, armour and ammo before walking through the gate.  Approach the bowl up
ahead to release some more enemies, then kill them all and check their alcoves
for more ammo.

Use the lever that's glowing blue [by the bowl] to open a pair of doors.  Kill
another group of enemies beyond these doors, then grab all the ammo and health
in the alcoves before using the first checkpoint.

Take all the ammo in here and grab the holy item on the left end of the table,
then save your game and take the key.  Quickly turn around and rush out of the
room if you can, then kill the group of enemies [including one large
rock-throwing enemy] and head for the next checkpoint.

Head right down the hall until a gate appears, then turn around and kill a
small group of rock-throwing enemies.  Collect the health if you need it and
head for the next checkpoint.

Part 04

Kill a very small group of enemies up ahead, then go left at the fork for some
ammo, before collecting more ammo in the right path and using the checkpoint
there.

Part 05

Collect all the ammo around the edges of this room and grab the armour LAST,
then kill the group of enemies and use the next checkpoint.

Part 06
-------

Simply follow the passage and grab the ammo to reach another checkpoint.

Part 07
-------

Shoot the barrels to find some ammo, then grab the super health to release the
enemies.  Use a few grenades to really thin them out, then finish off the rest.
Enter the room where the enemies came from for some ammo, then return to the
previous room and use the checkpoint on the stairs.

Part 08
-------

Follow the hall and rapidly jump to get past the barriers, then turn the next
corner and look very carefully at the ground as you save your game.  There is a
gap in the floor [turn up your brightness if you can't find it] so you need to
take a running jump [jump rapidly to build up speed] across the left side to
clear it.  Save your game again before using the same technique on the stone
slabs on the floor to clear the next gap.  Save once again and use a stone slab
to your right to clear the final gap.  You'll likely need to turn left as you
jump to land the final jump, but once you're across you can continue along the
passage.

Save your game and watch the ceiling as you carefully rush past the falling
blocks, you can save at a safe spot past the first group if you want or do them
both at once.  Either way you should enter the next room and drop to the floor,
then grab as much ammo and health as you can before climbing back up a ladder.

Carefully watch the swinging logs and walk past them when it's safe.  Save your
game on any spots between the logs so you don't need to get past them again.
One log moves slowly and doesn't swing very far, so you need to go to either
edge of the bridge and jump past the log when it swings away from you.  Work
your way past the last few logs as a section of the bridge collapses, then save
your game.  Move to the left edge of the bridge and look for a plank of wood
sticking out ahead of you.  Carefully jump to this plank while avoiding the
spiked balls, then save your game.

Enter the next passage and carefully run past the fire when it's not coming out
the walls.  Take the armour on your left and carefully work your way past the
spinning blades, then grab the health on the other side and climb the stairs to
reach the checkpoint.

Part 09
-------

Kill a group of enemies that jumps down from above, then shoot the trio of
large enemies.  Head down the stairs and kill a small group of enemies, but
watch out for the square tiles on the floor as you fight.  If you step on these
tiles some darts will fire at you, so try your best to avoid them.  Climb the
stairs up ahead and use the checkpoint at the top.

Part 10
-------

Kill a few enemies in this tunnel, then enter the next room and grab the
armour.  Quickly turn around and kill enemies on BOTH sides of you.  Grenades
work nicely to thin out the groups, otherwise the freezer works well on the
bigger guys.

Head down the hall to the next room and kill enemies on BOTH sides of you.  You
can jump rapidly around the room if you want to put some distance between you
and the enemies.  Either way you should enter the next passage after the battle
and use the checkpoint there.

Part 11
-------

Enter the next room and kill a small group of enemies, then go through the gate
up ahead and kill a larger group that comes from BOTH SIDES.  Use the lever [it
glows blue] on the right side of the room once the enemies are dead, then use a
second lever on the other side of the room.  Go through the gate to your right
to find some super health in a secret area, then head back to the checkpoint.

Part 12
-------

Grab the ammo to your right and hide under the upper floor as you kill the
ground enemies.  Once they're dead you can finish off the few enemies on the
upper level.  Walk through the hole in the fence and take as much ammo as you
can carry, then grab the key in the left corner.  Turn around and kill a group
of enemies, then grab whatever ammo you can carry.

There are two secrets that you can get in this room if you want to.  The first
is near the super health on the wooden beam.  Go to the right end of this beam
and on the other side of the wall there should be a ladder leaning against it.
Climb this ladder and drop onto the wooden beam to your left, then jump from
here to the beam with the super health.  Take a few more steps on this beam and
you should see a rope running horizontally underneath it.  Save your game here
and turn left, then carefully jump along this rope to reach some ammo and
armour in a secret area on top of a wooden frame.

For the second secret you want to use the second ladder that's on your right as
soon as you pass through the hole in the fence.  Climb this ladder and drop on
the wooden beam to your right, then take a few steps in the opposite direction
on this beam.  Turn around to face the hole in the fence, then run and jump so
you land on the section of fence to the left of this hole.  Quickly jump from
this fence to the next fence section on your left, then jump once again to yet
another fence section on your left.  Finally jump from this fence section to a
narrow ledge on the outside of the upper level to your right.  Jump the railing
here and grab the holy items to your left in this secret area, then head right
for ammo and armour on a nearby wooden beam.

Now return to the ground [or just ignore these secrets] and head for the
checkpoint.

Part 13
-------

Simply climb the stairs and head right to reach another checkpoint.

Part 14
-------

Kill a small group of enemies in this tunnel and head for the next checkpoint.

Part 15
-------

Climb the stairs and turn around, then squeeze on both sides of the railings to
find some ammo and a secret area.  Turn around once more and enter the next
room, then kill a small group of enemies and collect all the ammo.  Go down the
hall and shoot a small group of enemies, then head for the checkpoint.

Part 16
-------

Enter the room ahead and collect the ammo, then climb the stairs and take the
key there.  Quickly turn around and kill a group of enemies, then collect more
ammo and climb up either set of stairs to reach a gate.

Look beside the gate and you should notice a narrow ledge along the wall just
beyond the railing.  Jump over the railing and walk along this ledge until it
flattens out, then save your game and carefully jump to the lowest point on the
nearby roof.  Grab the ammo from this secret area, then return to the ground
and use the checkpoint there.

Part 17
-------

Climb the stairs and enter the arena, then whatever armour, health and ammo
that you need.

You get to fight a LOT of enemies here, but there are also a lot of items
[health, ammo] that you can use during the fight so it's not that bad.  As long
as you keep moving you should be just fine, you can even jump rapidly to move
really fast if you need to.

Otherwise kill the enemies until a few pits open up and fires get set in the
middle of the arena.  Kill all the small enemies now and start shooting the
flames in the middle of the arena.  Shoot the flames on every pole until
they're all out, then finish off the big guy.  You have to shoot the fires
first because he is invincible until they are all out.

Once the big guy is gone, simply go back to the previous room and go up all the
stairs, then use the level exit.

Follow the tracks and kill the enemies up high and in the distance.  Watch out
for those that use cannons to attack you, then continue down the right tracks
to find some ammo and FIVE holy items at the very end.  Backtrack a little and
head for the next checkpoint to ride another minecart.

[If you want the card for this level you'll want to use your gold cards here to
make sure you kill ALL the enemies.

Shoot all the enemies up high and behind you along the way to the large room,
then shoot all enemies in the large room as your cart circles around it.  As
you leave the large room you should have 42 kills.

Your minecart runs over a line of skeletons next and you should probably use
your cards a second time as you shoot the enemies in the next few rooms.  Pay
careful attention to your arrow as you shoot high and behind you.  Once your
cart stops you should have 81 kills.]


Ride the minecart and shoot the enemies along the way.  I found that the
freezer and the chaingun both worked quite well.  Jump off the minecart once it
stops, then walk to the edge of the track with the gap to warp to the other
side.  Continue along the track and smash the coffins, then grab all the ammo
beyond and enter the next room.

Shoot the group of enemies in here and watch out for the voodoo guy, if he
stabs himself you take damage so kill him FAST!  Enter the next room after the
fight and shoot some more enemies, there are also some voodoo enemies here so
kill them quickly when you see them.  Collect the ammo after the battle and
jump across the broken ledge to get some armour.  Rapidly jump up the debris at
the other side to reach the next checkpoint.


[You should have 121 kills at this point]

Enter the next room to kill another group of enemies, then grab the ammo and
head for the checkpoint.

enemies, then use the nearby health and climb yet another ladder.

Turn around at the top to see a ledge with some ammo and a holy item, then save
your game.  Line yourself up with the left beam on this ledge so that you can
clear the rope in your way, then back up and jump rapidly to build up speed
before you jump over the gap and land on that small ledge.  Grab the items in
this secret area, then turn around and take another running jump towards the
last ladder that you climbed.  Climb up the ladder once more and use the
checkpoint at the top.

Take the ammo as you kill some skeletons and a voodoo guy, then use the
checkpoint on the bridge up ahead.

Shoot a cannonball enemy on both sides of you, then continue along the bridge

Kill skeletons [on both sides of you] and cannonball enemies in this passage,
then grab the ammo as you follow it to an open room.  Cross the bridge here and
save your game, then jump to the teleporter on your left.

Quickly use your strongest weapons [and your tarot cards if you want] on the
voodoo enemies here before they kill you, then take all the ammo in the room
[especially around the towers] and use the next teleporter.

Walk right along this ledge and jump at the end to reach the area above, then
use the checkpoint to your left.

Part 13
-------

Walk around the middle of the bridge until you get lifted out of the pit, then
jump onto the ledge beside you when you stop moving.  Climb the nearby ladder
for some ammo, then use a V-jump [jump out at an angle and turn back in to
effectively jump around the post in your way] to reach the armour if you want
it.

Climb back down the ladder and head down another ladder nearby to reach the
ground, then shoot some skeletons and snipe some others up high.  Snipe some
canon enemies next and then do the same for some voodoo enemies.  Once all are
dead you can collect some ammo and head for the next checkpoint.

Part 14
-------

Shoot many skeletons here until some cannon and voodoo enemies show up, then
finish them all off.  Finally follow your arrow and use the level exit.


**NOTE: Here is a contribution from one of my readers, Adski.  He has found all
of the secret locations for this stage.  I have quoted his instructions below,
since my current computer cannot run the game.


"1. From the very start, jump down the side of the chasm. There is a secret
hidden behind a pillar at one end of the chasm. It is extremely tricky to get
back up again but it is possible, find a sloping corner.

2. Just before Checkpoint 3, look down, underneath you, to see the yellow, soul
health. Just drop down onto it. This may be easier if you "bounce" off one of
the ropes during the fall.

3. Before Checkpoint 7, just after the ladders. Turn back to face the ladders
and look down slightly to spot the secret. Take a running "dodge" jump.

4. Just before Checkpoint 8, turn around to see the fallen, sloping staircase.
Walk up here and notice the beam in front of you and the broken track beyond
that with the "ALL AMMO" crate. Use the rope to get to the beam then jump
towards the right wall and "bounce" off towards the track.

5. At Checkpoint 8, look down towards the winch on the wall before you, with
some armour upon. Step back and take a running jump. You WILL take damage!  You
will need to fall even further, to get out of here, taking even more damage.

6. After Checkpoint 10, as you make your way up the slope, there is a bridge,
where some enemies are situated, this is the secret. Just past it, is a raised
rocky outcrop which you need to get onto. You need to run along the edge of
this outcrop heading towards the bridge and then, at the end of the rocky
outcrop, jump across towards the sloped wall to the left of the bridge and then
"bounce" back onto the bridge.

7. Just before the conveyor cart, look down to the left of the walkway to spot
a ledge, which leads up to a large opening. Take a running jump toward the
ledge, but be careful of the slight overhang above it (which you may not be
able to identify until after one attemp), as this will stop your forward
momentum, preventing you from reaching the ledge. You will take damage! Then
make your way up the ledge to the opening. In here is a lot of gold and holy
items, also there is a chalice on one of the corners of the structure, this is
not an extra secret!

Getting back out of here is almost as dangerous as getting in and you will
suffer two more amounts of damage. Leave the area by walking up to the ledge,
look vertically down and to your left, you need to leap to the narrow ledge and
then down onto a winch mechanism. From here you can drop down onto a walkway.
Then make your way back to the conveyor cart.

8. At the top of the pit, look towards the massive wooden fence which blocks
your way to Checkpoint 12. Now turn to your left, slowly, until you see the
first raised wooden platform with some treasure chests on, above a rocky ledge.
This is the secret. Find your way onto the rocky ledge and walk under and past
the wooden platform to the deadend of the ledge. Facing the corner (away from
the wooden ledge), jump up and then back, onto the ledge.

9. Before using the end teleporter, you need to climb the ladder of the central
structure. From here you need to get to the level above by using the A-frame of
the winch system. There is a rock formation of a mouth and teeth, which
contains the secret. Enter between the teeth on the right hand side, as you
face it. Then exit from the opposite side.

10. After leaving the Jaw secret (9), turn right at the platform, onto and over
the rocks to find this secret."

                          (H-10) LEVEL 10 - SHADOWLAND

Card Unlocking Status:
- Kill King Alastor in no more than 04:00
- Silver: Health Stealer Card [2000 gold to place]


Personally, the first time I beat Alastor I got the card for this stage.  I
used the Mercy, Double Time Bonus and Rage cards among others.  Once Alastor
gets punched by the golem you can use your cards and blast him to kill him
really fast.  Otherwise you want to jump as much as possible while following
the ammo trail before the battle to save time.

Part 01
-------

Follow the trail of ammo and guns until you come to a cliff, then save your
game and drop down to start the boss battle.

You may notice that your weapons have no effect on Alastor, but there is some
armour and super health around if you need it.  There are also a few orange
rings in this area and they are very important to the battle.

Basically you need to stand on one of these rings if you see little lights
rising out of them.  Once you stand on one of these rings you NEED to get hit
by one of Alastor's attacks.  At this point a stone golem appears nearby and
starts walking towards Alastor.  The golem can't take much damage though so try
your best to keep Alastor's attention on you.  Once the Golem manages to land a
punch on Alastor he falls to one knee.  At this point you should use your cards
and unleash your guns on him.

After the battle you can sit back and watch the ending, then you can try your
luck at Nightmare difficulty to play the Pentagon stage.

                             (I) BLACK TAROT CARDS
###############################################################################

In every level of the game there is a chance to earn a black tarot card by
meeting certain extra objectives.  These cards can then be equipped [or placed
as the game calls it] in any stage that you play to make things easier for you.

The cards come in either silver or gold and the colour is pretty important,
although for once silver is better than gold.  Gold cards that are equipped
must be activated by pressing 'E' and they only last for a brief period.  You
can use your gold card set once per stage [unless you find better cards that
change that].  Silver cards on the other hand are always active, so you pretty
much equip and forget about them.

However you can't just equip cards that you have collected, you need to make
sure that you have enough money to do so.  For this reason you want to smash as
many objects as possible, so that you find lots of gold and are able to use
your well-earned cards.

Whenever you remove a card that you have placed you receive half the money back
that you spent to place it originally.  A list of which cards are in which
stages appears below.


01 - Weapon Modifier     [Has the same effect as the skull mask.]
02 - Magic Gun           [Unlimited ammo.]
03 - The Sceptre         [All enemies are weak.]
04 - Health Regeneration [Health starts regenerating 10 seconds after the last
                          damage.]
05 - Demon Morph         [Morph into demon.]
06 - Fear                [All enemies have 90% of initial HP.]
07 - Rebirth             [Fully regenerate health and armour.]
08 - 666 Ammo            [Get 666 ammo for all weapons at the start of the
                          level.]
09 - ???                 [???]
10 - Health Stealer      [5% of the damage to the enemy goes to player's
                          health.]

The following cheats are entered at the console [press ~], but they ONLY work
on Daydream and Insomnia difficulty.

PKGOD - Turns god mode on/off.
PKAMMO - Refill your ammo.
PKPOWER - Refill your ammo and health.
PKWEAPONS - Gives you all weapons.
PKDEMON - Turns on Demon Morph [still lasts just as long as usual], use again
          to turn it off early.
PKHASTE - Slows down everything a LOT, for a brief period.

PKGOLD - Gives you lots and lots of gold.
PKWEAKENEMIES - 

SHOWFPS 1 - Displays the frames per second, use a 0 instead of 1 to turn it
            off.
PKKEEPBODIES - Bodies stay forever, unless you use the code again.
PKKEEPDECALS - Decals [broken objects] stay forever, unless you use the code
               again.
PKALWAYSGIB - Enemies always fly apart into many bloody pieces, despite how
              they die.
PKWEAPONMODIFIER - Switches the same upgrade effect of the skull mask on/off.
