-----------------------------1. Introduction---------------------------------
==============================================================================

Hello Hello Hello! Welcome to my second FAQ ever and my first Maplestory FAQ.
Despite the fact that at the moment, I plan to finish this FAQ, I know
reasonably that I probably will not, due to the fact I'm playing Maplestory.
Ah Maplestory. You have stomped on my life for short periods of time for
several years now, and I thought I had finally gotten rid of you. But alas!
The Big Bang update brought me back, and this time I started with one of the
newer classes, and so far my favorite, the Battle Mage.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me ingame or through the
email listed above in the title. My character is Zweilous2 in Khaini and I
usually play on weekends and on weekdays from 5 to 8 PM PST (GMT -8). Keep in
mind that I actually have SOMEWHAT of a life (lolwut) so I probably won't
respond in the first, like, 10 seconds. Yeah, that seems reasonable...

ONTO THE FAQ!

==============================================================================
----------------------------2. Battle Mage Basics-----------------------------
==============================================================================

So you think you want to be a Battle Mage (BaM from now on)? Well, first thing
you should know, BaMs are NOT like your other mages. They have higher HP and
attack close range (generally). BaMs are more like Warriors that use magic.
Here are some of the pros and cons of BaMs

Pros:
High HP (for Mages)
Good mobbing potential (and available early)
Decent strength
Teleport in First Job
Auras are good buffs that affect whole parties

Cons:
No long ranged attacks until Second Job
Skills take a long time to execute
Low KSing potential early on (also High KSing vulnerability)
Some Accuracy issues

BaMs are more for the Warrior/Bandit/Brawler type of people than the
Mage/Assassin/Gunslinger type of people. If you like Warriors/Bandits/Brawlers
for their power but want flashier and more impressive skills, BaMs are for
you.

Also, DO NOT buy any wands or wand scrolls. BaMs ONLY USE STAFFS. Besides
this, they can use any other Mage equips.

==============================================================================
-----------------------------3. AP Distribution-------------------------------
==============================================================================

BaMs follow the same AP distributions as other Mages, they use Intelligence
(INT) and Luck (LUK). Most of your basic equips require LUK that is 3 higher
than your level (so a level 15 staff would require 18 LUK). However, having
this much LUK hinders BaMs because they don't have enough INT for attacking.
If you have the funding, it is recommended that you go LUKless and use scrolls
to boost your LUK and use equips that don't require LUK. Otherwise, I would
reccomend a Low LUK build. Keep your LUK low and use scrolls to boost your
LUK. Items like the Mushroom Kingdom Guardian medal that boost your stats are
extremely important for this.

==============================================================================
----------------------------------4. Skills-----------------------------------
==============================================================================

Here I will detail the Skills that are available to you for each Job
Advancement. I will include my opinion on these skills. Keep in mind that my
BaM is currently still in Second Job, so my opinions on Third and Fourth Job
skills might not be valid.

to 6 monsters at a time.

Skill: The Finisher

of light in the shape of a saw wheel. Can only be used after a Blow type

Opinion: Since this skill gets stronger the stronger your Blow skill gets, you
will be using this skill in Second and even Third Job. Very strong and also

Opinion: As in most RPGs, Speed is extremely important. Because your main

then a quick recovery can make a difference between getting hit and not.
Extremely useful and speeds up grinding.

Level 19: MP -66; 5% damage absorbed as HP for 117 seconds.
Level 20: MP -66; 5% damage absorbed as HP for 120 seconds.

Opinion: Good, but you have better skills. Is raised with Staff Booster and
the exact amount you want to raise the two skills is up to you, as both are
equally useful (that is to say, not very).

------------------------------5. SP Distribution------------------------------
==============================================================================

I am going to list in my opinion the best Skill Builds for each Job
Advancement and give brief descriptions for each one.

--------------------------------5.1 First Job---------------------------------

Regular Build:
Level 10: +4 Triple Blow (4), +1 Teleport
Level 11: +3 Triple Blow (7)
Level 12: +3 Triple Blow (10)
Level 13: +3 Triple Blow (13)
Level 14: +3 Triple Blow (16)
Level 15: +3 Triple Blow (19)
Level 16: +1 Triple Blow (20 MAX), +2 Dark Aura (2)
Level 17: +3 The Finisher (3)
Level 18: +3 The Finisher (6)
Level 19: +3 The Finisher (9)
Level 20: +1 The Finisher (10 MAX), +2 Teleport (3)

Level 22: +3 Teleport (9)
Level 23: +3 Teleport (12)
Level 24: +3 Teleport (15 MAX)

Level 26: +3 Dark Aura (8)
Level 27: +3 Dark Aura (11)
Level 28: +3 Dark Aura (14)
Level 29: +3 Dark Aura (17)
Level 30: +3 Dark Aura (20 MAX)

End Result:
Triple Blow: Level 20
The Finisher: Level 10
Teleport: Level 15
Dark Aura: Level 20

Since you can MAX every skill First Job, your order doesn't really matter. The
Finisher is not as good as Triple Blow because it costs more MP, so you don't
need to put any points into it in the very beginning. Dark Aura is MAXed last
because it is not necessary, though you may want to put one point into it at
level 10.

Level 53: +3 Yellow Aura (12)
Level 54: +3 Yellow Aura (15)
Level 55: +3 Yellow Aura (18)
Level 56: +2 Yellow Aura (20 MAX), +1 Staff Booster/Blood Drain (1)
Level 57: +3 Staff Booster/Blood Drain
Level 58: +3 Staff Booster/Blood Drain
Level 59: +3 Staff Booster/Blood Drain

Level 67: +3 Blue Aura (11)
Level 68: +3 Blue Aura (14)
Level 69: +3 Blue Aura (17)
Level 70: +3 Blue Aura (20 MAX)

End Result:
Staff Mastery: Level 20
Quad Blow: Level 20
Dark Chain: Level 20
Yellow Aura: Level 20
Blood Drain: ???
Staff Booster: ???
Blue Aura: Level 20

This is where things get interesting. Put one point into Quad Blow, Dark
Chain, and Yellow Aura for better and faster attacks, then MAX Staff mastery.
Then raise Quad Blow and Dark Chain together. Next MAX Yellow Aura. From
Levels 56 to 64, raise Blood Drain and Staff Booster together however you
like. It is best to raise them by Blood Drain percentages (ie. capping Blood
Drain at Level 9 where you get 3%). Personally, I would raise Blood Drain to
Level 17 so you get 5%, then put the remaining points into Staff Booster, but
it's up to you. Blue Aura isn't really useful, but Advanced Blue Aura is, and
it requires Blue Aura MAXed. Staff Booster may also receive a buff in the
Maple Chaos update, so you may want to put more points into Staff Booster just
in case.

Quintuple Blow, Advanced Dark Chain, Dark Shock, Teleport Mastery, and Body
Boost are all great skills even at Level 1. Then MAX Battle Mastery for better
damage. Then MAX Quintuple Blow and then Teleport mastery for strong attacks.
Put 11 points into Advanced Dark Chain and then MAX Dark Shock. Then MAX Body
Boost, Conversion, and Advanced Blue Aura. The only difference between these
two builds is the end. Either MAX Summon Reaper Buff, or cap it at 13 and MAX
Advanced Dark Chain. Personally I would MAX Advanced Dark Chain, but Maple
Chaos supposedly is going to buff Summon Reaper Buff, so do what you like.

--------------------------------5.4 Fourth Job--------------------------------

There is no realistic Build for Fourth Job, as the order of what skills you
find is random. Just MAX what you can. You can MAX everything by Level 200
anyway, so you won't miss out.

---------------------------------6. Training----------------------------------
==============================================================================

Levels 1-30:
Just do Edelstein quests. You should be able to get to Level 30 with very
little actual grinding. The only time you might need to grind is when you're
between levels 25 and 30. Then you should go to Streetlight Row and fight
Streetlights.

Levels 30-50:
This part is sort of ambiguous. After you advance to Second Job, go to the
Mushroom Castle. Do all the quests there to get the Mushroom Kingdom Guardian
medal which gives +2 in every stat. You should be in your mid to late 30s.
Then go to Kerning Square and complete all those quests to receive a +1 in all
stats earring. You will likely have trouble with the Spirit of Rock though, so
grind on CDs until your mid 40s or get together a party to defeat the Spirit
of Rock. Leave Kerning Square around level 43-45 and then start CPQing. Join
Rombot grind parties (which you can solo in the upper 40s) and you gain levels
quickly. However, because you start CPQing so late, you may not get enough
Maple Coins to get the items you want.

Levels 50-55:
Muddy Banks 1 in Malaysia. You WILL miss a fair amount when you start out, but
the EXP is decent. Training at these levels kinda sucks, so don't be too
annoyed at the slowness. I've also heard Cellions in Orbis are great, but I
haven't tried them so I can't say.

Levels 55-60:
Trojans in Ludibrium are great, but they are crowded. The next best option are
Scarecrows in the Masteria Haunted Mansion, but I've heard those are crowded
too.

Levels 60-65:
Robos or Master Robos in Ludibrium Toy Factory

Levels 66-70:
Puppets in Leben Mines. There is a quest at Level 66 called "Help Clean
Francis' Room." Go into the room and kill Puppets until you've completed the
quest, then forfeit and continue killing them until time runs out. The retake
the quest. Zeta Grays in Omega Sector are also good.

Levels 70-80:
Start off with Chronos in Ludibrium Clock Tower, then move on to Twisted
Jesters in the Haunted mansion (they're at the same map as the Scarecrows)
around level 73. Move on to Scorpions in Magatia or Straw Training Dummies in
Mu Lung once you get around level 77.

Levels 80-85:
Iron Mutaes in Magatia

Levels 85-100:
Start with Roids in Magatia, then move to MP3 when you get near level 90. MP3
is extremely popular and finding a channel is nigh impossible on popular
worlds, but the EXP is amazing. You can stick with MP3 to level 100, or you
can try Gallopera in Malaysia.

Levels 100-110:
Gallopera are good still. Red Nosed Pirate Den 2 near Herb Town is very good
as well.

Levels 110-120:
Pirates are still good. Vikings in Ludibrium are good level 116+.

Levels 120+:
Gigantic Vikings and Grim Phantom Watches in Ludibrium are very good. At level
125, head over to Werewolfs/Lycanthropes in El Nath. At level 133+, head to
Showa Hideout and fight Bains. Leveling after this is just pure grinding. I
would stick with Bains, but you can really go anywhere. Just find a place
which suits you best level 140+.

-------------------------7. Frequently Asked Questions------------------------
==============================================================================

Q: What server should I play on?
A: In general, the newer the server, the less people. Scania is teeming with
people, so finding other PQers is easy, but finding an empty spot in MP3 is
impossible. Newer worlds like Arcania and Zenith have almost no one around, so
finding empty training spots is easier, but finding good party members for CPQ
will be hard. I would choose one of the middle worlds like Khaini or Mardia,
but it's up to you.

Q: How are Battle Mages compared to the other Resistance classes?
A: Compared with Wild Hunters, Battle Mages are about equal. Wild Hunters
excel at ranged combat, while Battle Mages excel at short ranged combat. Wild
Hunters are great partners for CPQ Rombot grinds. Mechanics are better than
Battle Mages in both regards, but Mechanics are so overpowered it's
ridiculous.

Q: Is now a good time to start a new character?
A: YES. Red envelopes are out now, so new characters can quickly rack up mesos
(I had almost 1 mil when I left Edelstein at Level 30, and I never hunted for
Red Envelopes specifically).

Q: But Red Envelopes take forever to turn in...
A: Here's a trick. Set your NPC Chat to Y on your keyboard. Y also selects the
"Yes" option, so you can hold Y down to progress through the dialogue
extremely quickly (Be warned that this WILL lag your computer).

Q: I can't use any of my skills. What's wrong?
A: You probably have a wand equipped. Battle mages can only use Staffs.

Q: I defeated King Pepe and found Violetta, but I still have some quests to
complete in Mushking Castle but the vines have grown back. How do I get in?
A: When you get to a fork in the road, take the lower path. You will
eventually reach a spring that bounces you up to the castle. If you haven't
defeated King Pepe yet, you will be spotted and sent back down. There is a
glitch where you have beaten King Pepe, but you still end up on the map with
guards. Just try a few times and it should work.

Q: I can't defeat the Spirit of Rock!
A: You can actually enter the other sections of Floors 7-8 with a party.
Gather a couple people together and fight the Spirit of Rock together. You
don't have to worry about completing the quest since everyone gets a drop for
the quest. Soloing the Spirit of Rock is insanely tough, so do not try it.

Q: I have a question regarding...*something about Third/Fourth Job skills,
builds, or training spots*
A: I'm sorry but I cannot help you. My highest leveled character is a level 55
Brawler on Demethos and my Battle Mage is currently level 53. Don't worry
though, because I definitely plan on making it to Third Job this time (Fourth
Job not so much, but I'll try). Just give me time.

---------------------------------8. Closing-----------------------------------
==============================================================================

Thank you for taking time out of your "incredibly busy schedule" to read this.
Hopefully you learned some stuff. If you didn't send me an email so I can
improve this FAQ. I'd now like to thank some other people.

_Sparki_ for making a topic about Training Spots on the Message Board. It
helped me a lot.

Gamefaqs for being, well, Gamefaqs.

Nexon for making Battle Mages and for the Big Bang (grinding is so much
easier! :D).

Hidden-street and Strategywiki for Skill info and builds.

Higurashi for being an awesome guild.

Kanata1012 for convincing me to start playing this stupid game again, and for
dealing with my lunacy (though she's pretty crazy herself).

And finally, my boys in the Pokemon Black and White Clan for putting up with
all of this Maplestory playing. I HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN YOU!

Version 1.00: Febrauary 1st, 2011
Well I finished this in two days. I know I can clarify things more once I get
my character into Third Job and beyond. I was surprised how quick this
actually was to finish.
