"A 2D MMORPG; that does not disappoint."
Maple Story is a new 2D MMORPG released by Wizet that has hit the U.S shores with an absolute explosion. Read on to see my opinion on this Korean RPG.
The gameplay in this game is almost exclusively hack and slash, with not too much strategy to it. However, different classes attack differently. Warriors and Dagger Thiefs attack using Melee tactics; up close and personal, while Mages and Archers stay at long range and blast the enemy from a safe spot. It can be frustrating sometimes to be a Warrior however, with occasional Kill-Steals from classes that attack from afar. When lag-free, the game moves along beautifully. However, that is the one thing that brings this game down the most. I have a DSL connection, and I often am disconnected from the game. This is due to the servers still being stationed in Korea. Hopefully in the future there will be some servers planted in the U.K or U.S.
It can be a pain to pick up items, or a pain to talk to NPCs if in a tight spot, but overall the controls are nice. The arrow keys control the character, Alt making you jump, Ctrl attacking and Z picking up items. It would have been enjoyable to have a WASD format, but it may have been useless in this 2D environment. It is possible to display numerous facial expressions using buttons F1 through F6. In addition to that, numerous items and skills can be assigned to pre-selected buttons. For instance, you can assign potions to Delete, Power Strike to End, Speed Potion to Insert, etc. etc. It is very simple to assign anything to a key with just the press of a button.
Since Maple Story is a MMORPG, there really isn't any set storyline that you must follow. Your path is really up to you. That may sound cheesy, but it is true. There are numerous quests you can go on, as in any usual MMORPG, and some can have you ripping your hair out in frustration.
The visuals in this game are bright and cheerful, with melodies of greens and blues in forests and light and dark blues in the darkest depths of the dungeon. Characters in this game are generally sprites, with similar looks to GunBound (www.gunbound.net) You can dress up your character in numerous armors and disguises as well.
Replay Value 10/10
There is SO much to do in this game, it just blows the mind. You might think that all MMORPGs are huge, and well, they are. However, in this game, there's quests to do all the way from level 5 to level 105. And by the time you get to level 105, I doubt you'll be in a healthy enough medical condition to go on. There are 3 islands; Maple Island, the first island you begin on, with a few small towns and very weak enemies. Victoria Island, which houses the 4 guilds at which you can advance your character through the different job advancements, and the dangerous dungeon which houses the deadly Jr. Balrog and his Minotaur servants. The final island is Ossyria, which has not yet been implemented in Global MS, but has been reported to have extremely powerful enemies and many more quests to accomplish.
Final Rank 9/10
This game is great, free and will last a long time. So what are you waiting for? Go to the website (mapleglobal.com) and download it. Happy Mapling!
