"A toned-down mixed of games that are better then this...."
There was a gigantic mass of sigs on Gamefaqs with Maplestory in the name. It looked good, so I decided to try it out. After a 1 hour download, I was ready to play. But what I got was unpleasing. NOTE: This Review was made on 12/27/05. This game's aspects may improve after time.
This game has easy, 2d somewhat anime cartoonish graphics appealing to teens and kids. Although, with the small backround per area and small world, you will memorize it quickly. Most of the enemies use sprite patterns from others, and they never change their looks.
Character Develepment: 8/10
This is the third best character development systum I've ever seen in a MMORPG. There are TONS of clothing and many weapons along with a few joke weapons too. There are several hairstyles and colors for hair, and you can buy with real money more very good-looking styles. The Cash Shop is a great way of making money for wizet, but the problem is: The clothing does not boost your stats. There for, it is useless for 12-14 year olds who need to think about using there money for a game like this. With older players, they can buy for it just for fun if they want, as it is very cheap.
Currently there is 4 servers on the Global version of MS. There are several channels per server making it easy to sell stuff or kill without a mob of players. But scammers and hackers can easily change channels then logg off after a player spots them. Check out channel one: there will always be at least 3 hackers per large area in the biggest channel.
Music and Sound: 0
The music is HORRIBLE. There is a total of 11 songs, and 7/11 of them will no matter what your tastes cause you to pull out your ears. There is a HUGE lack of sound with only around 40 sounds, mostly compossing of enemy death sounds. You WILL be forced to turn the volume down.
Job/Class Development: 3/10
There are only 4 classes in the game, and the job advancements are just leveling wastes of time that gets you a more powerful stated version of the first job. Thats it.The jobs are preety pointless considering the Stat system alows you to get plently of Stat Points. In fact the only differnce from the jobs besides the strength of each class is their abilitys, although unless you are a mage all the abilitys do is make you look good. But since the community is like that, you need to do a lot of that.
The community is suprisingly nice for a MMORPG. Although if you have a decent size text bar you will always see a guy blaming someone for Kill Stealing, even though al they did ways acidently hit it with a thunder blast. THere is a HUGE amount of hackers, but very little scammers which is odd considring Maplestory has a quite annoying to load Hack Sheild.
I have never played a MMORPG with worse aspects. The whole point of the game is too look good in front of others, because most of the quest items suck at stats, as do most of the equipment. The whole thing is also 2D level grinding, which would be ok if the world wasn't so small. There are 7 towns, and a dungeon, not including the incredibly pointless holiday towns. You will get very annoyed with this and how it makes the enemies very predictable to spawn. The leveling system is very hard for a game with kid appealing graphics. After level 18, each level will take 3 weeks or more without staying up all day. After you hit level 30 or so, you will realize that the whole game is pointless leveling, as people do with most MMORPGS. So what do they do? Talk with the community of course! But with this game, the comunity is to busy killing to talk and they will only want you to go places to kill more. You will probobly only make 2 friends that will be with you for the time you play. There's also a party feature so you can team up with players and kill things sharing EXP and money but, the party will fall apart a half-hour later because of an idiot the pary leader or you put on the pary saying "lol u pley tis gamez horribl d00d". So you will be stuck on a level or so for a while, before you give up and quite the game or if your willing to give another try, start a new character.
The only reason I'm giving this game a 3 is because its a FREE MMORPG. This is probobly the best thing 8 year olds-11 year olds will get.
