"A solid Star Wars RTS"

Star Wars: Empire at War is, in a few short words, a good game with more potential. Many mods have made the game better/different. Super Star Destroyers, B-Wings, and TIE Interceptors for example. Overall, a solid Star Wars Game.

---Story---
9/10

The story is solid and involving. You use many of the characters from the movies, and see some of the "behind the scenes" events. A campaign for each faction doubles the storyline.

---Replayability---
8/10

SW:EaW is very replayable, to a degree. There are three difficulties for each of the campaigns (Rebel and Imperial), plus the Galactic Conquest Maps. Even better, there are mods which make the campaign longer, add new Galactic Conquest maps, more units, pretty much anything. However, once you've done everything... well, you've done everything.

---Gameplay: Galactic---
9/10

The Galactic Map is an excellent interface, but could use some more work. You have to use certain routes, no bypassing planets. It adds to the strategy, but not the realistic-ness. You build buildings and space stations, produce units, and move your forces around the map. Could use improvement of course, but what can't?

---Gameplay: Space---
9/10

The space combat is excellent. You can set up your forces, turn up the music, and watch your forces duke it out. Or you can have everyone rush at the enemy station. Or you could micromanage your forces. There are many ways to play, any of them valid.

You could even auto-calculate your battles. But where's the fun in that?

---Gameplay: Ground---
4/10

The ground gameplay is everything space is not. It all comes down to a contest of how fast you can get units into attack positions, not what those units are, or how they are deployed. Playing Empire, the Death Star completely eliminates the need for land forces. Build lots of units, and throw them at the enemy until they die. Not much more than that.

---Sound & Graphics---
9/10

EaW uses the music from the movies, plus a few more tracks. All excellent. The graphics, though not the greatest on low settings, are very nice at high settings. Don't zoom in on ground units though... you won't be quite so happy with the graphics up close and personal.

---Overall Recommendation---

Star Wars: Empire at War is a solid Star Wars, with a place on every fan's shelf. Not the best, but not the worst. It captures the Star Wars feel in a way no other Star Wars game has done.

Enjoy, and may the Force be with you!
