"Pretty much more of the same..."
F.E.A.R. Extraction Point is the direct sequel to F.E.A.R. and delivers just about what you would expect: more of the same. This sequel was NOT developed by Monolith (the people that made the original game), but instead by TimeGate Studios. It should go without saying, but just in case: this is a DIRECT SEQUEL, and you should REALLY play the first F.E.A.R. first!
The game starts off directly after the end of F.E.A.R., with the un-named "point-man" trying to escape the origin facility before it explodes. However, the explosion is imminent, and takes out the helicopter that was evacuating the point man, leading to his new objective of "reach the new extraction point" (which the game is obviously based on).
Doing so won't be easy, though. Shortly after crash-landing, the point man will discover that Paxton Fettel, who we all thought was dead, is alive and kicking... and taking control over the replica forces in order to stop you. And, of course, the mysterious Alma will still be around to take you through your fair share of hallucinations. The whole experience is rather short (it IS only an expansion pack, after all) but does have a very good cliffhanger ending.
The game play follows closely in the footsteps of the original title, with squads of replica soldiers for you to dismantle. The A.I. is just as good as ever, and will of course do its best to flank you with the help of the environment. There are a couple changes in the game worth noting, including the addition of crates that you can break for supplies, some new guns including a funky laser weapon, a standard mini-gun, and my favorite: a deployable turret "grenade" that will help you fight. There are some new enemies as well, including some giant mechanical enemies that will give you a fight, some invisible "Alma apparition" enemies, and a new type of replica soldier that is even more armored than the "Heavy". Some things were taken out of the game too, like the turrets and those cool flying mechanical enemies.
The graphics are on par with what you came to expect from the original game, even if they are very repetitive at times. I also couldn't help but notice the over-abundance of "Dell XPS" advertising that they put in the game (I wonder how much Dell paid to get THAT put in the game). The visuals (such as lighting) were well done, as well as the audio throughout the game.
Overall, the expansion pack won't blow you off your feet, but it does a great job in carrying on the original experience for a few more chapters while keeping the quality up to par. There are a few new things to try out and play with along the way too. If you liked the original F.E.A.R., you'll like this first expansion pack. It's worth noting that Extraction Point is CHEAP online (and in fact usually just comes with the first F.E.A.R.), but it's also NOT CANON according to F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin. Have fun and keep playing!
