What changes when you advance an era?

When you have the option to research a new technology, and it says that "this will advance you to the classical era" or another era, what effect on the rest of the game does advancing to a new era have?

Is there any advantage to era leaping, like using the Oracle to leap from the ancient to midevil era?

Advancing an era updates the graphics of things like you're roads and buildings to make them resemble the era you're in, but the change is completely cosmetic. There is no real advantage to era leaping aside from the fact that you have to move down the tech tree to era leap.
