01.)                    INTRODUCTION                                 G0100

Welcome to 'Runaway: A Twist of Fate' for the PC and DS, an adventure game by
Pendulo Studios from 2009 (an English version was only available in 2010). This
is the third of a series of adventure games. This guide is primarily written
for the PC version but there is also a release for the Nintendo DS which is
almost identical.

This is a sequel to the second game (The Dream of the Turtle) which left many
things unresolved. The events are recapped before it returns to that storyline
but at first the game does not seem related to the previous events much.

02.)                    BASICS                                       G0200

As usual this is just a walkthrough for the game. You should be talking to all
the characters in the game to find out more on your own and understand some
parts of the story better. Merely following the solve will only result in some
basic background, even some puzzle solutions might not be clear to you. There
are many, many objects to interact with that will tell you more about the
options available to you and they may result in hints for you to progress. A
good adventure game does not keep solutions from you entirely and will have it
hidden somewhere in cryptic messages or hints.

Double left click to teleport (does not always work)

Note: There is a patch for this game, bring it up to v1.11. If you are having
problems with general crashes and audio in the cutscenes then you definitely
need to apply this patch. If you do not then you might as well not bother until
you run into problems as the patch might have a negative effect on your

03.)                    WALKTHROUGH                                  G0300

Chapter One - Brian Basco is Dead:
After the cutscene, the first thing you want to try is pressing F2. This new
feature lets you see hotspots and paths without the need for pixel hunting. It
will come in handy throughout the game.

Gina also certainly has changed in both voice and appearance...wowsa. Get the
wreath and you will actually take the ribbon instead. Go behind the crypt to
meet Agatha. Get Agatha's tools to receive a flashlight. Take the stairs down
into the underground chamber and you will be in front of a portrait. Take the
urn and return upstairs. Exit the crypt to arrive on the cemetery map. Take the
far left path to the service cul-de-sac.

Enter the chapel on the right. Lift the mat to find a trap door. Open it. Get
the glove. You can now also grab the box near the ceiling since the trap door
acts as steps. Look at the box in your inventory to get a key. Unlock the
grating with this key and get the collection basket. Pull on the rope for a
scene. Pour the ashes from the urn into the box. Use the urn on the fountain to
fill it with water. Fill the water from the urn into the glove. Open the trunk
to get a strap.

Enter the workshop on the left to meet Luanne. Ask why she is in such a hurry
and she will eventually give you the coffin assembly manual. Get the tools on
the right for a file. Put the glove full of water into the refrigerator. Use
the empty urn on the frozen glove to retrieve it. Leave and return to the
chapel. Use the flashlight to light the book on the left and then use the
coffin assembly manual on it too, finding a dead Swede in the process. Exit the
chapel and go up the stairs, then walk left a little to make the entrance to
the cemetery arrow appear on the map. Go there now.

There will be a scene at first (you can just quit the conversation after the
introduction), then you can approach the scaffolding on the right of the gate
and get the jack. Enter the crypt and go down the stairs. Use the frozen glove
in the urn to cool the cable hanging in the center. Go behind the crypt to find
Agatha and ask her to translate the manual. Go to the workshop and hand Luanne
the translated manual. After she has gone you can finally open the large door
on the left and take the tools (circular saw).

Return to behind the crypt and attempt to get the strap on the statue of Atlas.
Use the jack to prop to the statue so you get the strap. Enter the crypt
underground chamber and you are now ready to break the wall. First file the
stone block down, then after the scene you can tie a strap on the block's ring.
Return upstairs and peek into the basement in the center. Tie the other strap
on the angel. Peek back down once more and combine the circular saw with the
collection basket. Use this combination on the steel cable attached to the
angel's head. Go upstairs to get a bollard. Return to the chamber and destroy
the brick wall with the bollard.

Chapter Two - The Art of Running Away:
Optionally you can talk more here else just stop the conversations with the
lowest option.

Enter room 304. After the scene, get your pillow to retrieve the mint candy as
well as a machete. Go to the other side of the room and attempt to use the air
vent. Talk to Marcelo about using the air vent and then the imaginary box until
he gives you one. Leave the room and enter the rec room for another scene. Re-
enter the rec room. Take a white board from the book shelf. Take a marker and
jumbo paper clips on the right and then rummage through the trash in front of
the nurse's station. Enter the bottom part of the screen to turn the camera.
Look at Hollister on the right and give him the mint candy. Combine the marker
with the white board and select 'Rancho Cucamonga' from the choices. Approach
Mr. Nice on the left and he will grab his suitcase. Exchange your whiteboard
with the one he dropped next to his feet. After the scene, cut the elastic
straps on the suitcase with the machete. Combine the elastic straps with jumbo
paper clips and return to your room (304). Give the imaginary box to Marcelo.

In the casino, get the plastic tube near the top right and the sliding scale
weight (you will get another response first so try again). Go up through the
air vent for a scene. In the hallway, talk to Quickle through the door to room
305. Ask him for his opinion on anything and while he is ranting you should use
the scale weight on the nearby radiator. It will be broken and another scene
plays. Exit the room and look at the photo board. Use the marker on Ernie's
photo for another scene. Grab the stuff from Chuck's tool box.

Chapter Three - A Timely Suicide:
Get the nearby boxing gloves. Leave and look under the bridge on the left to
get a wire-cutter. Attempt to enter the shed in the back before returning to
the house. Try going upstairs. Ask Bennett about the shed. Go outside the other
side of the living room towards the porch. Cut the fishing line to get a fish
hook. Back indoors, get one of the kitchen utensils. Look under the kitchen
counter and use the spatula on the envelope and the fish hook on the hole to
get the key.

Leave via the front door and enter the shed. Grab the diving goggles hanging on
the right as well as the rope near your feet. Use the goggles on the envelope
and the boxing glove. Return to the cabin and sit on the chair to talk to
Bennett about the envelope.

Go upstairs. You now have the option to change scene to Bennett at the
sheriff's office so click the badge icon in the bottom right corner. Talk to
the sheriff about believing it was not suicide and continue that you are not
with the FBI and friendship. Tell him you were a close friend of Chapman. The
sheriff wants proof so quit the conversation for now.

As Gina, get the trophy near the wedding photo and then take the "thing"
(locket) hanging on it. Look at the locket in your inventory. Cross the
corridor and pick up the bow and an arrow hanging on the wall. Return to the
previous scene and make a phone call to Bennett. You want to tell him potential
nicknames for Chapman (picking the sheriff's uniform option is also interesting
for a laugh). The correct nickname is "Lovey Bear".

Return the action to Bennett and talk about the nickname (Lovey Bear).

You will end up in the bathroom as Gina again. Get something from the military
chest (glow sticks). Go outside via the back door and unlock the well with your
key. Use the glowstick to light the well. Combine your arrow with the rope and
use this on the well to get a boot. Look at the boot and you will actually find
a laptop. Enter the cabin, go upstairs and hook the laptop up to the
transformer. Use "Hurricane" as the password.

Chapter Four - The Unexpected Ally:
Quit the conversation unless you feel like chatting with Gabbo some more. Enter
the casino and 'get' the photocopier. Enter room 303 and talk to him about the
tattoo and passing anything on for it. You will get a pen. Enter the air ducts
and go to Bennett's office. You will actually end up at the morgue.

Get the bowl, shackles and something from the medical instrument cart. Walk
past the fence to the pool and climb down the ladder. Grab the forceps and
hose. Place the forceps into the second hole from the left alongside the wall.
This gives you an iron bar. Remove the drawer from the desk with this iron bar.
Tie the hose around the desk to get out.

Enter the air ducts the way you came in and finally move to Bennett's office.
Combine the plastic tube with the vacuum. Vacuum the coffee on Bennett's desk.
There will be a scene.

Move towards the 'heart of the beast'. Place the candle into the bowl (in your
inventory) and use this on the incinerator. Use the pen to tattoo Kurgan's
body. Use the machete on his body to give him a manicure. Use the iron bar on
the hatch in the middle to open it. Kurgan has been Brianized.

Climb the ladder. Slip the shackles around the bars. Slip the iron bar through
the shackles. Use the forceps on the cable at the other corner of the roof. You
do not actually jump down now as this is just as setup for later.

There will be scene with Ms Palmer. Look at the pill in your inventory. Talk to
Dr. Reset behind the room divider about being nervous, the big exam, what the
heck to ask him. Ask about Neuroshockine XR. Pick "...dead" and "...a direct
electrical shock" from the options. Talk to Ernie about the tazer inside of
Miss Palmer's purse. Give him the casino chips in exchange for the treatment.

Chapter Five - Deconstructing Brian:
Open the garbage container. Walk right and up the alley and up the ladder.

This next part is a recap of what happened in and after the second game. You
can skip a lot of talking but you also have to do a lot of talking to advance.
Just do not repeat the same questions over and over and you should soon be in
the next playable section.

As Kordsmeier, open the capsule Brian is holding. Leave the tent. Ask O'Connor
about the mission and eventually take away his glue. Take something from the
box in the jeep (should be the cigars). There is another box full of coconuts
so take one as well. Slash the coconut with the machete. Put the trantonite
into the coconut. Glue the coconut together. Give the coconut to O'Connor.

Put the grenade from your inventory into the capsule. Walk right to a desk and
connect the USB grenade to the laptop. Call on the phone on the desk for a lot
of scenes.

When back in control, get the iron, a juice bottle and bucket from the shelf
and then rummage around in the hamper for a scarf. Look outside the window and
then combine the iron with the scarf. Empty the orange juice into the bucket.
Throw the bucket outside the window.

Chapter Six - The End is Here:
First go down to the alley, then walk left and continue to down the alley. Pick
up the hook hanging on the smashed garage door and then enter the run-down
building on the left. Get some rubble and the hammer. Use the iron hook to
force open the crane door. Go down into the ditch to get a briefcase. Look at
it in your inventory to get a blowtorch. Spray the briefcase silver. Return to
where the guy knocked you out.

Interact with the ladder for a conversation with Tom. Talk about his script-
writing, and pitch your ideas about a dorky guy. This gets you up into his
"office". You can quit the conversation now or tell him the rest of the story
of the first game.

Outside his office, use the elevator on the left to get up on the roof. Look at
the golden chicken and lightning will strike. Weld the leg with the blowtorch.

After the scene, get the string that is nearby where you used to be tied up.
Get a couple of empty juice bottles. Use the tie pin to make holes in the juice
bottles. Tie the juice bottles together with the string. Dump the walkie-talkie
into the chute.

Walk forward to change the camera perspective and get something from the carts
to get a suit. Steal everything from the red cabinet. Climb up to the small
window and take the rag (scarf). Return to the large container and use the
walkie-talkie to ask about an iron. Ride the cargo lift up and use the scarf on
the door to exit.

Outside, use the iron hook on the manhole. Walk left down the alley and ring
the door bell on the right. Quit the conversation the next time he comes out
and after a few attempts you can ask if we wants to play an Italian mafia thug.
Return to the scriptwriter and tell him about the perfect buyer for the script.
Ask about the silliness and who stole the golden chicken from him. Return down
the alley and look through the lit window of the restaurant. Brian should
mention the guy who stole the golden chicken.

Climb through the unlit window on the left side. Make a switcho-change-o by
using the rubble with the golden chicken (on the DS you have to first combine
the hammer with the rubble to reduce its weight). Get the money from the guy's
pocket. Combine the leaflets with the money and place that into the briefcase.
Return to the screenwriter for your reward: a script. You will end up at the
ladder. Spray the contents of the briefcase with the chloroform in the
containers in the background. Return to the actor, ringing the bell and telling
him about the script. This will be the final part of the plan.

But before all that you must talk to the big guy in front of the building and
choose the plot of land under construction. This is also the last thing you
have to do in the game.

Q) Is this is a sequel to the other Runaway games?
A) This is the third game after just 'Runaway: A Road Adventure' and 'Runaway: 
   Dream of a Turtle' in that order.

Q) Is the Nintendo DS version the same game?
A) They are identical but for the obvious resolution/audio quality differences
   but there is also one tiny puzzle that must be solved manually on the DS.

Q) Will there be a fourth game?
A) Seems like Pendulo Studios are workign on another game for now but I would
   not rule them out returning to these characters again in the future. The
   current storyline, however, has wrapped.

Q) The audio is totally out of sync in the cutscenes!
A) Install the offical patch that fixes this problem.

Q) I keep crashing at this or that point!
A) First I suggest you install the latest patch. You can find that on the net
   with ease. If you still have crashes I suggest you play around with the
   resolution you set the game at, it worked for me at one point in Chapter 2.
   If the patch resolves an issue at one point but then you crash at another,
   you can always try re-installing the game and trying the new place without
   the patch first.

Q) Can you die in this game?
A) No.

Q) Is this game long/hard?
A) Long, not really. Hard, I think it's rather easy; besides there is a hint
   system that will always push you to find the solution.

Q) Is this game in English?
A) The game was first released in Spanish in 2009 and is now also available in
   English (and some other languages I think).

Q) Why did you not write a guide for the second game?
A) I am not very fond of the second game. Maybe one day I will catch up.
