/ I. About this guide /
/=======================/
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How many of you are looking for that one particular item you need for the
battle tower? Or maybe you'd like to know how to get another Dawn Stone or
two? Are you just interested in finding lots of extras to trade on wifi? If you
can answer yes to any of those questions, you might find this guide
interesting. I happen to be an item hoarder on Pokémon games, and I want to
create a definitive guide to collecting those items. So let's get started!
First, some ground rules. Let me tell you what this guide is NOT. This is not
a walkthrough. I am not going to be able to tell you how to progress through
the game, and please, please PLEASE stop emailing me and asking me to. xD My
purpose is to describe the various items you can get throughout the game, and
where to find them. That's all. So please keep that in mind. :) Thank you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
/=========================/
/ II. Places to get Items /
/=========================/
A. Pokémarts
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These places sell a variety of Healing Items, some Held Items, Pokéballs, and
Mail. They're a good place to look for all kinds of basic items. The department
store in Veilstone City is also a great place to get a variety of things, from
the basic mart items to TMs and Held items. It's well worth checking out.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B. NPCs
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many of the characters in-game give you items. It's important to talk to
everyone you meet, because oftentimes you'll get an item you can't get anywhere
else.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C. Battle Tower and the Game Corner
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These items are offered up as prizes. Things like TMs, held items, and other
useful items can be found in these places.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D. Dowsing
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your Dowsing attachment for the Pokétch is a wonderful tool. It allows you
to locate the positions of all kinds of items, from very basic heal items and
Pokéballs all the way up to PP Ups and held items. It's a vital tool.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E. Wild Hold Items
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many of the Pokémon that appear in Diamond and Pearl are holding items. It's
common to hear about Magby and Elekid holding Magmarizers and
Electrizers, respectively. But there are also certain kinds of berries that
only can be found on wild Pokémon, not to mention expensive and otherwise
unobtainable goodies. Thievery is very rewarding in Pokémon!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
F. Pickup
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Several Pokémon have the useful ability called "Pickup" (Mono hiroi) that will
sometimes (10% of the time) allow that Pokémon to suddenly "pick up" an item
after a successful battle. The Pokémon doesn't have to participate in battle,
and it doesn't have to be conscious. Which items you can find depend on the
Pokémon's level, so it's important to choose wisely which level your Pickup
Pokémon will have (more on that later).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G. In-game events
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some items (especially key items) are only obtained by completing a certain
task or clearing a specific goal. These items are often important, and often
one of a kind.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
H. Trainer Pokémon hold items
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some Pokémon owned by NPC trainers carry items. I don't know the specifics of
this yet, but I will add more as it comes in.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I. Trades, GTS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sometimes, a Pokémon you get in trade will be holding an item. If it's one
you're trading for with a friend, you can often dictate what that item is,
through negotiations of the trade. With the GTS, it's anyone's game, and the
priority of whomever puts the Pokémon up for trade. Keep your eyes open for
good deals!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
J. Lottery
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Jubilife City, there's a building with a large television screen flashing on
the front of it. That's the TV station. Inside, you'll find a lady behind a
counter. Every day, you can talk to her and play the Pokémon lottery. Like in
previous games, it depends solely upon matching the drawn number against
trainer numbers on all your Pokémon - including the ones in the PC. You win a
prize for matching even one number, so it's important to check every day. Also,
keep in mind that it matches starting from the rightmost number and works to
the left.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
K. Pastoria City Berry Lady
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Pastoria City there's a house in the southwestern most corner that houses a
woman who travels all over Sinnoh collecting berries, and every day she will
gladly share her spoils with you. Every day she will give you one berry from
numbers 36-52, which comes in very handy, as some of them can only be found
through her and by stealing them from wild Pokémon (some of which only appear
in swarms). Making a daily trip to her house is not a bad habit to fall into.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
L. Pal Park Belt Guru
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just to the left of the Pal Park, on Route 221, is a house. Inside you'll find
a man who seems to have a thing for Pokémon of particular levels, and for
belts! Every day he'll tell you he'd really love to see a Pokémon of level
[insert level here]. Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to find a
Pokémon of that level and bring it to him before the day is done. If you
succeed, you will get one of three belts: A Black Belt, an Expert Belt, or a
Focus Sash. If you fail, you have to come back the next day and try a new
level.
Note that the levels he asks for are COMPLETELY random. He might ask you for
level 98 one day, and then level 5 the next. It's not a bad idea to check with
him every day either, and it's very easy to do, because when you enter the
Pal Park building for the first time, it is registered as a fly-able location.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
M. Berry Master
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Berry Master lives in the house on route 208, and every day, he will give
you a berry (1-26).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
N. Amity Square
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Amity Square (in Hearthome City) is a great place to get items. You need
only bring a "cute" Pokémon inside (cute Pokémon include Happiny, Clefairy,
Psyduck, Pachirisu, Pikachu, Buneary, Drifloon, Jigglypuff, Torchic, Skitty,
and Shroomish). Once inside, the walking begins! After every 200 steps (keep an
eye on your pedometer attachment of your Poketchi) turn around and press A
while facing your Pokemon. It will have picked up an item - either a rare berry
(numbers 27 thru 35) or a Super Contest accessory. Different Pokemon yield
different items.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
O. Pokémon Battle Revolution
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The new Pokémon Battle game for the Wii promises to deliver an added bonus -
items you can trade to your Diamond and Pearl games! The available items may
be bought with points (I assume you accumulate these through battles). These
are the available items:

/ III. Item Collection Strategies /
/=================================/
A. The "Gotta Steal 'em All" Strategy
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some items can only be obtained through item theft, and it's fortunate that
there are many options for doing this. Many Pokémon can learn one of these
three moves, which will allow you to steal the opponent Pokémon's held item:
Trick (this move exchanges your own held item with the opponent's, but if you
aren't holding one, it acts just like the others), Thief, and Covet. Of the
three, I must emphatically recommend Covet. It has the same base power as
Thief, and is four times the number of PP, at a whopping 40PP. Give it three PP
Ups or a PP Max and you'll find yourself with a thieving powerhouse capable of
stealing 64 times without a trip to the Pokémon center or using an ether. Watch
out for ghosts, however. Covet is normal and physical, so it won't hit ghosts
without help. That's where Odor Sleuth comes in handy.
My favorite thieves are Zigzagoon/Linoone. They learn both of these moves
naturally, and at fairly low levels too. As an added bonus, they also can come
with the ability Pickup, which is another handy item scavenging tactic (more on
it next). They are also hardy little critters, and have a great movepool.
You'll have to get your national dex to find one on the GTS or get a swarm, or
you can have a friend trade you one. They're definitely worth it!
If you want to steal held items, another thing that you'll find really handy is
the "Compoundeyes" ability. This ability increases your chances of running into
a wild Pokémon holding an item, but it only works if the compoundeyes Pokémon
is at the front of your team. You can do what I did and take any old Pokémon
with that ability and give him a smoke ball to hold. Look for the Pokémon you
want to steal from, and if you run into a different one, the smoke ball will
allow him to run away. Some Pokémon that have this ability are Nincada,
Butterfree, Venonat, and Yanma.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B. Pickup and Prosper
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many Pokémon come with the Pickup ability. Zigzagoon, Linoone, Phanphy, Meowth,
Aipom, Ambipom, Teddiursa, Munchlax, and Pachirisu are the known Pokémon. Keep
in mind, however, that some of them have alternate abilities too, so you may
have to do some searching to find one with Pickup. Zigzagoon and Linoone picked
up a second ability in Diamond and Pearl, so you'll have be careful with them.
A quick note about Pickup. The items you can get range greatly in rarity and
value, but one thing I have definitely noticed is that it DOES depend on level
like it did in Emerald. Here is a listing of the items you can get with Pickup,
and at what levels they are available. Thanks to TRE for this information!

Each item has a percentage associated with it. These percentages are the result
of TRE's guess work, coupled with the percentages used in Emerald.
C. Lotto Fever
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I cannot stress how important it is to check the lotto number every day you
can. The prizes for this get very good very fast. My strategy for this is
simply to trade with many people, and do it as often as you can, because the
more trainer numbers you have in your PC and your party, the better chances you
have at a win. To increase your odds, try offering semi-decent Pokémon on the
GTS for crappy ones. :P Ask for common ones like Bippa and Mukkuru, and watch
the trainer numbers roll in. I would also recommend you keep all your traded
Pokémon in a separate area of your PC, so that you don't accidentally trade
them away. xD
Here are the prizes you can win. Note that they will be filled in as they are
confirmed by other players:
1. 1-number match - earns you an extra backdrop in the fitting room upstairs.
2. 2-number match - earns you a PP Up.
3. 3-number match - earns you an Exp. Share
4. 4-number match - Unknown
5. 5-number match - Master Ball.

================================================================================
== ITEM LIST ==
================================================================================
================================================================================
This list is divided into sections, depending on where in the pack they are
located. The only exception is secret base items, which do not show up in the
pack. They are stored in your underground bag, and in your PC when you place
them in your secret base.
/--------------------------------/
/ I. Held Items Pocket /
/--------------------------------/
These are items that your Pokémon can hold, and are contained in the first
compartment of your pack. Although it includes standard items like leftovers and
Razor Claw, it also includes things that may not be intuitive, such as elemental
and evolution stones, escape ropes, fossils, and repels.
A. Arceus Plates
In addition to boosting the power of certain types of moves, the Arceus plates
also play a key role in using Arceus in your team. If you make Arceus hold
one of the plates, he will take on that plate's type. So for instance, if you
made him hold the Draco Plate, he would become the Dragon type, and would
acquire all the strengths and weaknesses of that type.
