Version 1.1
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Version History-
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is version 1.1 of the FAQ. More updates are coming up soon so keep an eye
out for the new versions, it might help you that much more.

Thursday, April 24th, 2008- Started the concept and the writing of the FAQ.

Saturday, April 26th, 2008- Finished and posted the guide.

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008- Got a few requests from other websites to post this
guide on their website. I gladly agreed and decided that, before I gave them
my permission, that I was going to add more to this FAQ. Added their websites
to the website list, added the section "An Introduction To Anno 1701" and
"General Tips" sections. Also fixed the art at the top of the page.

Monday. June 30th, 2008- Time for a mini-update! A friend of mine gave me a
link to a really good ASCII text generator so I updated the ASCII on the top
of the faq. I also changed my e-mail adress to not get my faq stuff mixed with
personal e-mails. You should also expect some bigger updates in the near futur!

I.An Introduction To Anno 1701
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the Anno 1701 Manual: " Anno 1701:Dawn of Discovery takes place in the
17th century. Your mission is to explore and settle the New World." That about
sums you what the game is about. This game is like when the French and
British decided to settle "The New World". You need to help your side to
defeat enemies to take control over The New Word to show your Queen that you
are worthy of your title, so to speak. This game is like a mix of Ages of
Empires and Sim City, but 100x easier. The only real thing that you need for
this game is your stylus and your brain. If you don't have either then I
suggest that you get one =D.

So, you are new to this game? Don't quite know how to play or what to do?
If you don't know how to play there is a pretty good tutorial at the beginning
of the game. It shows you practically everything that you need to know before
starting to play on your own. You should really listen to your advisor since
he tells you about everything that is going on or what you have to do. The
point of the game is to build up a good enough settlement to support your
expenses like Factories or Armies. Every chapter has several mission, each
getting harder and harder. You must do the goals that your advisor says that
you have to complete or else you wont advance any further in the game. With
this game you will finally be putting that stylus to use.

If you are having trouble figuring out how to place your settlement or
anything else for that matter, try playing the "Sandbox Mode". This mode
is called Continuous Play and it was in the Anno games ever since they came
out. This is a easy and fun way to train yourself on how to build the best
settlements. This will increase your knowledge about the game and it might
even motivate you to write yourself a guide like this one. This is hands-down
one of the best DS games that I have played so far, it's right up there
with Pokemon Diamond.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
II. General Tips
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the game there are some things that you must always do and, for you, I
added them all here. They are not placed in any order, yet.

- Always upgrade you ships/soldiers when you have the chance, it makes a huge
difference.
- Try to make the most efficient Factories, so you can make more money to pay
for those things you've always wanted.
- Keep you settlers satisfied with whatever they need, it helps to get more
tax money and if you don't, they might just leave.
- Make sure that your settlement is not on an Island with a volcano, unless
you want to see it burn. Some missions you have too though, but it's not your
fault.
- Keep you Island and your Production Islands full of soldiers, you never know
when you are going to be invaded and it may be too late when it does happen.
- Don't leave the game un-paused if you leave the DS, you might lose, it only
takes a minute or two if something goes wrong.
- Take breaks from the game every hour or so, go stretch your legs outside.
- Always build you settlement in the spot of the island with the biggest
open space, it makes a huge difference.
- Always keep spots for the Public Buildings because, again, it keeps the
settlers happy.
- Always have brick roads on your production islands, it make a big difference
in the long run.
- Play Continuous Mode to get some experience after playing the tutorials, it
makes quite the difference, believe me because that is what most experienced
players did.
- Listen to the advisor, he is the most important person of the game, telling
you when something is wrong, if you are being attack or if your people need
something, it saved my life so many times.
- Make frequent saves, especially if you conquered an island or passed a
mission, you never know when something bad is going to happen.
- Always explore the whole map when it is unexplored so you can see from far
if something is coming.
- Have public buildings in the middle of the settlement and the people's
houses gathered around it, this is probably the best strategy.
- Only pay the tributes if you have enough of what they need and never buy
what they need, just wait until you have enough or it is too big of a waste
of precious cash.

III.Frequently Asked Questions
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Any question that you may have is probably answered in this section. If you
read this and are still confused you may want to read it again or e-mail me,
telling me that I forgot something so I can add it with future updates.

III1.Building FAQs
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All questions here have to do with buildings and building information.

Q- I can't build a warehouse anywhere, what am I doing wrong?
A- This is a common mistake with a few ways to solve. The first way it to
make sure that, if you are in campaign mode, that you are trying
to settle the right Island because you may have one assigned for you to
settle. The second reason why you can't build a warehouse can be because
you are trying to settle an island that has already been settled. The final
reason could be, if you already have an island settled, is that you don't
have enough money, supplies to build the warehouse.

Q- I can't build anything else on my island! Help!
A- This also can be caused by a few things. First check to see if you are
trying to build that building within the influence of a market. If the
area is dark then you can't build there. Try building another market close
to the spot that the building will be on and you should be able to build
it. If that does not work check to see if you have enough supplies like
wood or bricks, and also check your money and if you have enough to build
it.

Q- I can't place a shipyard/fisheries anywhere along the shore!
A- Check to see if the spot were you are trying to build the
shipyard/fisher is within the influence of a market. Also check to see if
the shore is rocky because if it is you will not be able to build anything
on it. Also check your money/supplies to see if you have enough supplies
for that building.

Q- I connected a new building to a road but there is still a red
exclamation mark over the building, what is wrong?
A- The building not only has to be connected to a road but it also has to
be connected to a warehouse/market because markets are the ones who pick up
the supplies that the building made.

Q- Do PUBLIC buildings have to be connected to a road?
A- No, they do not but they have to be close enough to the people so they
can access it.

Q- I build a lot of production buildings at the beginning of the game but
after a few minutes I go bankrupt, why?
A- All settlers on you island pay taxes. The taxes pay for the production
buildings. All production building have a running cost and if the cost is
more then the taxes you are getting you lose money. After a bit this will
cause you to go bankrupt. Only build a few buildings and make more houses/
upgrade houses to be able to build more buildings.

Q- One of my buildings says it has a low productivity, what/why is that?
A- Every island has a fertility. But "clicking" on that island you can see
what you can an cannot grow on it. If you build a Sugar Factory on an island
that you can't grow sugar on your building will have a very low productivity.
Productivity is just how hard the building is working. The higher the
fertility, the higher the production.

Q- What is the best way to place houses, public buildings?
A- There are many ways depending on what you like. Personally I make a big
spot for public buildings in the middle of a large square and then I place
houses around that, making sure that they have roads for the guardhouses/
hospitals and firehouses. This ensures that all of the people have what they
need. If you don't like this way there are dozens of possibilities, just
experiment.

Q- I am not producing enough (product here), any help?
A- For some buildings like sugar plants just make sure that they are upgraded
fully if you are running out of that product. For buildings that have many
steps or production(like tea), have on island for the tea leaves and on
another island have the tea factories, as close to a market as possible.
You can do this with tea, clothes, food, etc.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
III2.War FAQs
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This section covers any questions related to war and army management.

Q- How do I produce soldiers?
A- To produce soldiers you must build a Barrack. The barrack fills itself
and all the warehouses/shipyards with soldiers, depending on the demand. In
fact, any building with a GREEN roof can hold soldiers.

Q- How do I build Warships?
A- To build a warship you need a shipyard. Place a market as close as
possible to the shipyard to increase productivity and speed. Click on the
shipyard and tell it to build a warship. Depending on the demand in the
shipyard and warship the ship should automatically fill with soldiers.

Q- How to I attack an opponents Island?
A- Attacking an island is fairly simple. Click on a ship and you will see
a small icon of a building with a green roof. Click on the and it will
open up the map. After the map is open click on the island that you want to
attack. Then click on the are that you want the Beachhead to be placed. All
you have to do now is attack the opponents island. I suggest attacking
their barracks first, so they can't get more troops. The more beachheads
placed the better the chance of winning the fight.

Q- I can only build 5 ships/warships, is this a glitch?
A- No, it's not a glitch. With the DS version you can only build 5 ships. I
know it's not much but the game would be too easy with more ships.

Q- What is the best strategy before going to war?
A- Before even thinking about taking over an opponents island make sure you
have enough money coming in. I usually wait until I have about 200 coins of
positive balance so you can support a few beachheads. I make sure that all of
the buildings with green tops in my island are full of soldiers. Take the max
amount of ships that you can full of soldiers. It would be a good idea to
upgrade your soldiers and ships until you run out of money. When on the
opponents island attack the barracks first to stop the opponent from
re-supplying it's soldiers. Thats about it =D

Q- My soldiers always lose and are not very strong, what am I doing wrong?
A- There is a building called an academy were you can upgrade your soldiers
and ships. It may be expensive but it's worth it, trust me.

IV.Building Information
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't know what a building is for? Well you came to the right place to
figure it out!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IV1.Material
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lumberjack- This hard-working guy gets you wood for a very cheap price. This
building is a necessity because anything that is built in the game needs wood.

Quarry- Please see "Stonemason" below.

Stonemason- The stonemason works with the quarry to gather bricks. Almost
everything that takes wood also takes bricks to build.

Ore Mine- Please see "Ore Smelter" below.

Ore Smelter- This building works with the ore mine to produce iron. To make
iron the Ore Smelter also needs a market close to get wood and a Ore Mine
to get the iron. This is also a necessity.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IV2.Food
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mmmmm.....food

Fisher- Makes food very slowly. They are great when you start off but when you
can afford Grain Farms and Windmills stop building these. They work best fully
upgraded.

Cattle Farm- I never use these. They also make food about as fast as the sheep
farm makes cloth. Okay for islands with a lot of space.

Grain Farm- The best food source, very cheap. Please see "Windmill" below.

Windmill- Works with the Grain Farm to make food. Very fast and efficient. The
best food source of the game.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IV3.Roads
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Very short section, thank god.

Dirt Road- Market carts move very slow on these roads. Make these at the
start when bricks are scarce.

Stone Road- The best road for production islands. Market carts move about
2x quicker on these roads allowing better productivity.

Avenue- Mostly used for looks in your city, don't recommend using instead
of the stone roads, just not worth it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IV4.Products(Goods)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Very, so very long...

Sheep farm- Used to make cloth. Very essential, should be the first product
building that you build on your island. Also used to make ships(the sails).

Sugar Farm- Used to produce sugar. Two sugar plantations go a long way.

Tea Plantation- Please see "Tea Factory" below.

Tea Factory- Used with the tea plantation to make tea. Recommended to be on a
different island from the plantation, close to a market, for the best
results.

Spice Farm- Just like the Sugar Farm but make spices instead.

Cotton Farm- Please see "Tailor" below.

Tailor- Used with the cotton farm to make clothes. Just like the tea factory
it is recommended to be on a different island, close to a market, for the
best results.

Apiary- Used with the Cocoa Plantation and the Confectionery to make wonderful
chocolate. Apiary produces honey.

Cocoa Plantation- Used with the Apiary and the Confectionery to make
chocolate. Cocoa Plantation produces, well, cocoa.

Confectionery- Uses honey and cocoa to make chocolates. Put on a different
island, near a market building, for best results, just like tea and clothes.

Jewell Mine- Please see "Jeweler" below.

Jeweler: Used with the Jewell Mine to make jewelry.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IV5.Public Buildings
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anything that a citizen needs, and then some.

Market Building- Probably the most important building in the game. Makes it so
that you can build farther and father away from the warehouse. Also good for
production buildings like Windmills.

Tavern- Supplies the people with booze, like a modern-day bar. Doesn't have a
very big range so you may need a few later on in the game.

Chapel- A religious place were people pray. Very small area of influence.

School- A place for education for lower-leveled settlers.

Church- Just like the Chapel but has a large area of influence.

Bathhouse- Used for the settlers to take showers, thank God for these.

University- A place for education for everyone, even Aristocrats.

Theater- For plays, in 1701 they were probably still showing Shakespearian
plays.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IV6.Protection Buildings
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Always use protection.

Fire Station- If ever a fire starts this guy will take it out in no time. Very
useful.

Surgery- Should it not be called a hospital. Used to keep plagues from
infecting your city, also very useful.

Guardhouse. Who came up with these names? Just like a police station, stops
crime.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IV7.Military Buildings
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aye aye, captain.

Shipyard- Produces ships. Always have very close to either a warehouse or a
market for the best results. Uses cloth and wood to make ships/warships.

Barracks- Produces soldiers. Extremely needed for protection from enemy
attacks.

Outpost- Not very useful unless invading a enemy. Cost a lot so don't build
unless you have to.

Academy- Used to upgrade your soldiers and warships. Upgrades are expensive but
extremely useful.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IV8.Splendor Buildings/Monuments
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last but not least, almost all builds just for looks.

Cathedral- Gigantic church, takes up the space that 3 Churches do. Very
useful to raise Aristocrats taxes.

Palace- Bigger that the Cathedral. Also used to raise taxes, not needed.

Well/Flowerbed/Monument/Hedge- Looks only, I never use.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
