I have only played the Genesis games and Sonic Heroes, but I don't know much about the story for even those games. If this story intertwines with the other stories, I will probably pass on it, since I would rather not be left in the dark.
It has several areas from past sonic games as areas and there are actually Gizoids in this game as enemies, which leads to Tails mentioning Emerl, who was an older, less advanced prototype Gizoid.
