How do you engage the special life when there are no more matches left on the board?

statusI guess you are talking about the special moves you earn when matching lion coins.
To use it you only have to press L (shoulder button) and then select the jewel you want to make disappear.
If you have no special moves previously earned and a "no more moves" occurs, you'll get a free special move so you can't be stuck
