Jump Superstars
Review by nterparis
"This time anime is watching you!"
Intro
References made to this game come from Super Smash Brothers and that is a good comparasion. However, this game adds a heck of a lot of depth to deck making to coincide with the really fun combat system.
Background (Information for first time players)
I don't know much about anime or Japanese but this game is user friendly and does make you want to figure out what the animes are about. Genroh's guide on GameFAQS and IGN's walkthrough will make your life a lot simpler when playing this game.
Gameplay (Deck Making)
A good indicator of what games should be judged on. As you clear stages new cards will be unlocked, as well as bases that you put them into, to make the card usable beyond its beginning form.
Cards start out in 3 phases and they listed in order, helper, support, and attack. Don't expect the cards to come fully pieced together. By matching the card with the correct base you will unlock new forms for it.
Gameplay (Battle)
Now that the foundation of successful gameplay has been manifested, it is time to see how well you can fight. With the amount of characters in the game it is amazing that some of the characters don't copy other's move sets. Sure some characters are better then others but that is expected.
A HUD display informs you of your current health and special attack bars on the top screen. On the bottom screen the characters in your deck are displayed and activated by tapping the screen.
The controls are as follows... this will get you started.
A= Jump (possible to double or even triple jump)
B= Weak attack
Y= Strong attack
X= Special attack
*Modify your attacks by pressing the attack button of your choice with a directional button.
Gameplay (Multiplayer)
As with any DS game single-card play leaves a lot to be desired, it is only possible to use four premade decks (chosen at random) on one stage. Even so it is nice that this option is available because the action can be altered with up to four human players.
Multi-card play is where the fun is. It is possible to pick from anything that has been unlocked, as well as swap custom made decks with other players. If you don't have four players to battle, computers can be chosen, and they can also use decks you have built.
Graphics
Not much to say... if you have seen any anime don't be surprised to see all details accurately portrayed with what the DS can bring you. I'm impressed, because many details and attacks from the animes are in the game and it brings a pleasant and comedic result because of that. Everything is easy to see and there is no slowdown when the action gets fierce.
Sound
The tunes are catchy, and there are just enough of them to not be labeled repetitive. All actions sound like they should and given the fact that this is a Jump game all everything you hear in the is true to the series.
Final Verdict
This game gets a solid 9 in every sub-category listed. I highly recommend buying the game even if anime isn't your thing. The gameplay is so solid that it really isn't possible to go wrong, and the depth is mind-boggling. Since it is a handheld title expect it to be over quickly, but don't let that fool you, if you decide to just rush through and not complete all of the objectives, your denying yourself the greatness of this game.
Don't worry about the availability of this title as there are many copies on Ebay. If you are interested at all in this game just click the "buy it now" option and have $40 dollars ready.
