Kaitou Rousseau

Review by Mykas0

"There's no play time to steal around here."

This product is the living proof that a good concept not always generates a good game. OK, the game may put you to laugh many times, but you can complete it in a single afternoon and that will be all.

You will be playing across a 3-chapter adventure, split into several smaller ones, where you will be controlling Rosseau, a kid thief who uses his abilities to protect his town from the evil deeds occurring in there. In case you're wondering, his abilities are mostly composed of merging with the scenario nearby, and that's where the good concept of this game is seen.

In some points across the game, you will be able to tap a certain part of the scenario and a menu will appear. In there, you simply have to add the missing parts in a drawing, with the original version being seen in the upper screen and you having to use your stylus to complete the one in the lower screen. This task usually just requires you to follow the lighter lines, oddly placed where you need to draw. Later, you will find a single opportunity where you need to draw an upside-down one, and that turns out being the only opportunity where you may be put into trouble.

Besides the features above, the game also has an exploration component, where you have to interact with people in a way that allows you to proceed in your adventure. Such interaction should generally be used to acquire information or new items, and that's all you'll find , apart from the usual "pick the right answer" sequences, so famous in this genre of games. Those sequences are played in a comic-like way in the lower screen and, after skipping each of those screens, they instantly advance to the upper screen. While useful (you can easily read previously seen screens), that function is usually worthless and looks plain bad.

Apart from having an extreme lack of play time, this game also seems to have an odd lack of replay value, with a single mini-game for you to unlock and nothing else that would matter to a random player.

Don't get me wrong, the game features amazing sequences where you will probably laugh more than you normally do in this type of games, but you can easily notice that this seems to be a tuned-down version of a "point and click" game.

Graphics are great, you can clearly see all the characters and they seem to resemble ones taken from actual anime series. One could wonder if they will ever make such series, as the storyline of the game would actually fit nicely in such thing.

The sound quality is interesting, with the player not being able to recall it a few hours later but allowing him to enjoy the more than a dozen different themes featured in the game. You can enjoy them, but more often than not they turn out being themes that you wouldn't like to hear for several hours in a row, something that turns out not being a problem, as you can complete the game in less than an hand full of hours.

So, who should get this game? Bearing in mind that knowledge of the Japanese language is strongly advised, this is one of those games with a very strict audience, that of players that want a short, and yet incredibly fun, game. All others, please stay away from this.
