Mega Man ZX
Review by acefondu
"Mega Fun!"
Mega Man ZX brings us back to a time of side-scrolling mayhem we loved on every gaming platform that's ever existed. So, how does ZX stand apart from the pantheon of Mega Man games? Let's review shall we.
Mega Man ZX delivers something entirely new to the series of Mega Man games in general. First off, you don't pick your levels. That's right, no thumbing through the boss master list and picking your poison. In fact, most of the time you never see who you fight until they make a grand entrance. This is the first side-scrolling free roam Mega Man game, and it's amazing.
This game introduces Bio Metals which is just another way of saying "Beat a boss master and get his gear." Admittedly it's a bit different than that seeing as the Bio Metals are actually from dead villains and heroes of the Zero and X series which is really cool as that plays to the plot.
Graphics: 8/10
They could have done more with it. It looks like Zero 4 with mild 3-D thrown in now and then. Still, slashing things with the Z-Saber is as fun as ever. Some Anime scenes are thrown in as well and they look great. Probably the best Anime ever produced for Mega Man.
Sound: 10/10
Wonderful tunes, you'll want headphones for this game. Everything is catchy and really works with the atmosphere. The sound effects are enjoyable as well, even if the voice work was in Japanese.
Gameplay: 9/10
Tried and true Mega Man here. Not much to add other than the Bio Metals which don't play a role other than for your own amusement and secret area access.
Story: 7/10
Dark plot for a Mega Man game, which is welcome. It's not the fuzzy garbage they give you in Mega Man Battle Network. Best plot Capcom has managed to pull with Mega Man though. It's actually coherent! Not to mention if you've played the Zero series you get some welcome connections.
Overall: 9/10
This game will be played over and over again for me. It's quick and fun, and a refreshing challenge. Multiple completions are needed here for unlocking stuff and going through it both with Vent and Alie. If you're a Mega Man fan don't think twice about picking this one up. For the uninitiated, first where the heck have you been, and second you should really start here, I have a feeling this series will pick up steam with every entry.
