Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
Review by SSJ Trunks 2
"Collecting.....Collecting....and more collecting... When will you collect the fun part..?"
What appears as a typical Dragon Quest game turns out to be a quirky, pun-filled spin-off game staring the weakest enemies in any Dragon Quest game, the Slime.
Story:
The story is as strange as the game is. Members of the Plob led by none other, the Plobfather, have attacked the kingdom of Boingburg and it's up to Rocket, a simple blue slime, to save the day. The story is riddled with references to past Square-Enix games and the game is not afraid to poke fun at it self. Also, the game is riddled with sexual innuendos that surprisingly made it into a supposedly kids game but it really depends on the audience.
Gameplay:
Gameplay is kind of a mixed bag here. It can be both repetitive and fun depending upon your situation. One part of the gameplay has you controlling Rocket trying to rescue your fellow slimes and find ammo for your tank and that's it. Hardly any puzzles though there's a few. It is not a super hard game and I'm quite surprised they included HP as the enemies hardly ever damage you. Boo! The tank battles, on the other hand, are surprisingly fun for the first few rides but then they just become too repetitive. Just about anything can be used as ammo. You can even fire yourself at the enemies tank and infiltrate their base by destroying the controls and such but they can also do the same to you but it is not enough to keep the game fresh.
Although the gameplay bears resemblance to Zelda it does not contain the deep gameplay and mind-numbling puzzles found in the series. Some may like the gameplay some may not.
Sound:
The sound really fits the game well as you can hear the slime bouncing and stretching. The music is weird. It's hard to explain because the tunes have no purpose other than make me wonder. But it fits this game as the sound is supposed to be weird.
Graphics:
Although the world is animated quite well, it doesn't really test the limitations of the DS so the graphics really look like souped up GBA graphics. Everything is full of life. The enemies animate very fludidly and there's no slowdown at all in the game.
Replayability:
The main game can last you up to 15 hours but the game can last quite a while, if you like collecting things as there are still slimes and ammo for your tank along with the monster trophies. Personally, I would've preferred a Hard mode or a secret area or more goodies usually found in any Dragon Quest game. Those looking for such will be disappointed. Ones looking to spend the other time collecting then the game fits your bill.
