Digimon World DS

Review by TsukiPaladin

"It was better than I hoped, but..."

As a Digimon fan, I loved this game. As a gamer, this game lost its ability to entertain me after just a week of play. It was a very good game, but there were some flaws.

Story (6 /10)
As a plus, you DO get to pick your gender. It starts as a kid in school who has been hearing rumors of monsters on the computer. He gets on a school computer and does a websearch. Something called the "Digital World" appears on the screen. You see monsters walking around. Suddenly you get an email, and then you get sucked into the digital world. You quickly become a tamer and then embark on a quest to become the Tamer King.

We get to see the DATS team from Season 5 of the Digimon anime, called Digimon Savers. They make cameos, and may become a bigger part of a story.

From the start, you train and go on quests to help the digital world.

Graphics (8/10)
The graphics were beautiful, besides the fact that I found the text hard to read at times. The graphics were all I could for in a DS game. DigiCentral looked exactly as I had pictured a digital town. The dungeons had electronic devices in them occasionally, which I believe enhanced the belief that you were in the Digital World. The digimon looked good, and the artists paid attention to detail. The battles had actual backgrounds, but the attack animations were dull.

Battle System (5/10)
Here we get to the very reason why I lost interest in this game so fast. The battle system is turn-based, but then again I like turn-based battles. At first it seemed so very easy, and it was mildly entertaining. Then, it got repetitive and boring. All you did was click 'a' then select an attack and click 'a' again. You can move your character between 6 spaces. You get 3 digimon for battle, and another 3 for relief digimon when your main 3 are KO'd.

Overall GamePlay (9/10)
This game, as stated in the title, was better than I had hoped for. There were a few flaws but I still loved this game. Through DS wireless you can, match with friends to get rare digimon(Which can also be done on wiFi. It's the only WiFi function this game has). You can also trade and battle. The way to obtain new digimon is very interesting. Every time you encounter a digimon, you get a percentage of scan data depending on its rank as well as your own. The digimon's digivolutions differ from what they are in the anime. This is not a bad thing though. It makes it easier to get your favorite digimon. This game has many new concepts and, desite its flaws, it is a truly great game.
