Yoshi's Island DS

Review by Rennab

"<b>It was pretty fun while it lasted....but it didn't last long!</b>"

When I got this game, I expected to have AT LEAST two weeks of fun playing it; I was wrong. I remember the good old Yoshi's Island for the SNES with all the catchy Yoshi-like music. Beware of this new one.

Story: 3/10
The original Yoshi's Island had the basic story of Baby Bowser ordering Kamek to kidnap Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, but only being able to get Baby Luigi. Simple right? There's not much of a difference between the old and new game's stories. Yoshi's Island DS has basically the same story, but this time adult Bowser comes back in time somehow and orders to take every baby in the world, because the babies have some invisible star over their head which somehow lets whoever has all seven babies take over the world. There's no explanation to how adult Bowser managed to get back in time or why the babies can take over the world if all seven get together. I would have given the story a 2/10, but the story had some humorous parts in it, which made me change my mind.

Graphics: 6/10
What I like about the graphics is that Nintendo surprisingly kept the same good Yoshi's Island look. What made me rate it lower than normal (8/10) was that Nintendo tried to make the graphics look better and a little more 3D, but actually made it look worse. Some of the enemies look weird and look like they have eyes, etc., on the sides of their faces. Nintendo should learn that 3D (or in this game's case: trying to look 3D) isn't always better and may ruin some of the game.

Controls: 7/10
There's not much to say here, other than, Yoshi's Island DS basically has the same controls as the original Yoshi's Island. The controls are very easy to use and get a good score. The only bad thing I've noticed is that the “Ground Pound” attack doesn't respond very much unless pushing it really hard—and a lot of times, it happens when you don't want it to.

Sound: 1/10
The sound is horrible. The music is mostly consumed by rhythms and beats with a couple of dings and beeps, here and there. I don't know why Nintendo didn't use the old music that got you more into the game and just remix it to make it better. It would be better and easier to concentrate if you just listened to REAL music or even just turned the ‘music' off. The sound effects are basically the same as the original game. Although, the Baby's cries are so annoying, even more annoying than the original game's. As I said earlier, just turn the sound off or listen to REAL music. I tried it with REAL music and it was a lot better. I've noticed that the GameBoy Advance has much better sound than the DS.

Gameplay: 5/10
The game was WAY too easy (as was the New Super Mario Bros.). I beat the storyline in a few hours playing-time. There are only a few levels that are actually hard—and most (if not all) of those levels are secret/extra levels. The only hard part in the game (besides those ‘hard levels') is when you try to get 100 points on all of the levels (well, at least some of the levels).

Replayability: 3/10
The only replayability in this game is MAYBE the Time Trial Mode (depending if you like time trials) or when you try to get 100 points on all of the levels (which is kind of boring). Although, you unlock “Extra” levels if you get 100 points in all of the levels in a world.

Overall: 4/10
I was very disappointed in this game; the original was a lot better. I regret wasting $30 on it. The game would be so-so if you rented it because you can beat the entire game in a week or so and you wouldn't be as disappointed in yourself for wasting $30. You might as well buy another game.
