Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Justice for All

Review by metralo

"Only a foolishly foolish fool would not purchase this game!"

At first, one would think, “Meh, it's just a text-based adventure game. I don't see what's so great about it. All you do is read!” Of course, that's only at first.

I'll start off with the sound. While it's not as good as the first one, (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney) it's still good. Phoenix talks, but just the usual objection stuff. All of the others just say objection as well, and occasionally you'll hear the “WHIPISH” sounds of Franziska's whip. You also hear that noise when people get their testimonies broken, or smashed up, or some other word I can't think of. The overall music (not the voice acting) is good as well. Some of the stuff I would happily get off something like iTunes or a CD, but that's not what I'm talking about here. I think I've covered everything, so I will give the sound a 10/10

Something that doesn't stand out so much is the graphics. For something that is a port for the GBA, you can't really expect much. The sprites really work well for the situation though. When it comes to Phoenix's nervous face or Franziska's whipping motion, it all runs smoothly, and there are a lot of them too. There's even one at the end that's emotional, and you never think would happen, and it'll take you for a spin. The backgrounds are nice too. Although they are just backgrounds, it can't get much better. So, I'll give the graphics and 9/10

Here's where this game really shines; the story. It's so wonderfully written, that you just have to go back and read it again. There are a few typos here and there, which sucks because it ruins the feel…sort of, but sometimes there are not even noticeable, so it shouldn't be an issue. It's not that we care about though. It's the dialogue during the cases and the courtroom that matter. I'll sum up the first case, since it doesn't really have to do with anything. At first, you are having a bad dream. You then wake up, to find out that it was the cell phone that was causing you to have the bad dream. Or course, for a sudden turn of events, the killer for your next case has been watching you the whole time, and when your back is turned…WHAM! He hits you with a fire hydrant. Now, you have amnesia, and can't really think for the case. So you have some lady to help you (Maggey) figure out what you're doing. You'll have to win the case though, because…your client is always innocent! It's a good tutorial for the game, as it's needed for people that haven't played it before. This is also the case that gets the most controversy, due to people thinking otherwise on how the killer did it. Case 2 is good, Case 3 is…no comment, and Case 4 is amazing. I think I did cry when it was unfolding due to the sad/happy ending. One of the first games to ever make me cry and feel happy inside at the same time. For that, I give the story, a 10/10

Game play is the same pretty much as all text adventures. You click and go, click and go. Probably one of the biggest gripes for me. Its fun to hold the Y button and scream “OBJECTION!” or “HOLD IT!” or “TAKE THAT!” into the microphone though. Just don't do it in public. You'll get weird looks and possibly hit with a purse or something.
There's also a new thing, that's called, “psyche-locks”. For when you're out of court, you can present evidence and shatter people's secrets. Not only that, but they got rid of the ! marks too! (for when you're in court, that's how many times you can screw up.) It's just a life bar now, so it gives you more Variety. It doesn't reset after court trials either, the only way to fill it back up is to use the psyche lock system and shatter the locks to fill it up halfway. I think I covered that, so I will give the game play a 9.5/10

Controls are point and click…point and click. Never cramps up your hands, so I guess it's good. 9/10
